I think Resident Evil 4 is a good game that made too many mistakes and took itself too far away from Resident Evil to be, in essence, a good Resident Evil game.
Ganados are a good idea. My favoruite enemies in any game, ever, are the Shibito from Frobidden Siren. Smart zombies are goooood. It's just unfortunate that Ganados aren't that bright, really. They're not scary undead, but they're not smart undead either. Yeah, they can use some weapons...badly. And the ladder thing is good. But, in the end, they still run close and then stop, allowing them to be killed. In essence, for all the supposedly smart things they can manage, apparently getting into contact with a guy armed with several guns quickly when you have a small axe is not a good plan when you can, admitedly, abosrb several bullet holes. You need to provide ample chances for you to fill them with bullet holes.
Now, if they were smart they'd be creepy. I mean, actually smart. Capable of hiding behind a wall and waiting for you to get close and then stabbing you in the shoulder smart. Or lurking on the other side of a dusted, dirty window waiting for a sillhouete to move past. And, of course, dodging and weaving around at a decent speed, trying to get close. Or even hiding and taunting you so others can move behind while you're trying to pick off the sod behind the low wall laughing.
It would also help if they were more monstrous. Yes, there head popping off and a strange tentacle appearing is different. But what makes zombies freakish is they are clearly humans that are very, very wrong. With ganados you don't get that same feeling, but in reality they're just as twisted as a zombie. Possibly have the parasite sprouting from places, just slightly. Someone walking towards with a a bunch of small tentacles wiggling out of there fingers is different...
On the plus side, the game play is far superior. It's more actiony because of the wider area, weak enemies and plentiful ammo but the system could work equally well in confined areas, which would limit your field of vision, and a more limited ammo supply. I really wanna do a game using RE4's engine set in a city, with narrow alley ways, small houses, partially lit hospitals and, for the big scenes, wide avenues chock full of evil intent. It simply makes more sense to play this way and see what the character sees. I always got annoyed getting eaten by a zombie Jill could spot but I couldn't.
As for the story...well, it really is the point where the game fails desperately. It's a string of cliches tied together by poor characters. Leon as the hero is especially weak because he never gives the impresion of being afraid or even worried. Why should you be when Leon clearly thinks he's up to the task of eliminating several hundred mutant enemies, there giant allies, regenerators and a bunch of bosses? Ashley is there entirely for the purpose of fan service. She didn't need to be a young, pretty girl whose completely useless for anything but slowly turning cranks and opening the odd door. And mostly gets in the way when you aim.
The stronger characters were Ada and Krauser. Ada gave the deffinite feeling on being inc control and knowing what she was doing, and of being a manipulative wench as well. And Krauser gave you the feeling he really was angry and arrogant.
So yeah. It's a good game, but lacks in an realy scares, or puzzles, or exploration. A great action game, especially Mercernaries, but a poor addition to the Resident Evil mythos given it's poor plot and characters and lack of scares.

well i personaly like the game, i did not like the first 3
resident evils because of the veiw, but thats just me,
but in the new game the view is really to my likeing.
also the weapons are a nice touch ;.with the sighting
as a red laser sight, it puts a nice touch on it. i was
looking on today as my friend was smashin the heads
off zombies, that instead of just having to kill enimees,
such as the swamp monsters, you have to go through
a series of menoviers and skillz to take them down.
over all i reackon its great, 9/10
[ only 9/10 because you have to keep catchin "you know
who" , kinda anoying, lol ]

I LOVE RE4! Yep, I have no fear in saying that
Before anyone accuses me of being a noob jumping on the RE bandwagon, I've been playing the games from the start. I got the original when it was new on Playstation, got RE2 the day it was released and I've been passionate about the series ever since. I bought a GC for REmake, Zero and RE4 and a Wii to play UC.
I like zombies. It was my love of horror and zombie films like Dawn and Day of the Dead that drew me towards RE in the first place. I'd like to see zombies return at some stage but I think the 'parasite people' are a good enemy too.
I still play the old games to this day and I love them not just because of the nostalgic appeal. I still enjoy actually playing them to this day. But in many ways, RE4 is so much better than them, it's not even funny. RE4 was and still is an incredible technical achievement. IMO one of the greatest videogames ever made... EVER!
It still amazes me, just how much they fit into the one package.
*The main game is a long, epic masterpiece. Yes, there's a lot of running and gunning but there's also a lot more...
*You search and explore the environments to seek and collect various jewels, treasures and coins.
*Upgrade weapons to make yourself even more dangerous (sure, why not?).
*Sniper shots, shotguns in the face, grenades, knives and melee moves etc...
*On rails sections like on the mine cart and truck. Damn good fun.
*Shooting Gallery games. RE version of 'Point Blank'. Good fun and good training. More incentives with the collecting of bottle-cap figures.
*The ganandos can contain nasty surprises when you blow off their heads and there's a good selection of enemies, creatures and boss fights.
*Great graphics, environments, cut scenes and FMVs.
*The game play is awesome.
*There are variations in play: alone, with Ashley and as Ashley.
*The story, which seems to get the most criticism here, is okay. In some ways it's very good but I'll admit the whole 'President's daughter' thing is very corny. But watch the original RE game's intro and tell me that's not corny.
*There are extra weapons and extra costumes to unlock and use.
*Assignment Ada is cool and an extra game to play. I would rate it higher than a vast number of other full games in my collection.
*Separate Ways truly is an entire, extra RE game to play. This is worth the price of admission alone. It not only rocks but it adds to the RE4 story and is a story in itself.
*The Mercenaries, again by itself, is better than a lot of full priced games. It's incredible fun and with 4 levels to play, with 5 characters, there's a lot of variety. It's intense. Sometimes I find it too intense. I have to be in the right mood to play it. If I'm feeling mellow or a bit lazy, I just find it too damn fast and furious. It's a fantastic inclusion.
RE4 is very different to the older games in a lot of ways but it's also very similar in other ways. I still clearly remember the first time I played it on the GC. Minutes into the game, I had a huge grin on my face. It's Resident Evil, Jim. But not as we know it.
My favorite is the PS2 version because it has all the extras and I like the red laser sight, as opposed to the big red cross-hairs that feature on the Wii version. The laser sight is a brilliant and unique part of the game. Moving it slowly across the screen and seeing it hit things of various distances is superb.
I love the early games, the Survivor series, both Outbreak games and RE4. I don't get this whole thing where it has to be one or the other, (choose your side) debate.
RE4 ROCKS!

I have to agree; how many of these topic do we actually have?
Welcome to THIA, but asking a topic like this, is silly, sorry to say.
About 50/50 people on this board have opposite feelings for RE4.
Many like it, many hate it, as a RE game, of course.
Your opinion can get so many people to argue with you.
But I wont, just that your opinion is in favouring of RE going FPS.
Also, don't get offended...
But are you aware there is a RE0 and Code Veronica?
Because they follow the same premise as the first three games.

How many more RE4 opinion threads do we need? Seriously...Thats what I was thinkingI have to agree; how many of these topic do we actually have?
If you find that you're repeating yourself, as I sometimes do, just cut and paste a previous response (that's what I intend to do next time )

I thought it was a valid topic but maybe I should have just hung out in one of the 'Jill is Birdwoman' threads.

I thought that was the point of the topic. To discuss the pro's and cons of RE4 and share your opinions, as me and Darkmoon did. This is a Resident Evil forum and if we can't discuss RE4 here... we're in serious trouble.

And since it has been brought up so many times in other topics there really is no reason for a thread about it. There's multiple threads here which people have already shared their views on the game, even though it wasnt the threads topic. So basically, most of us have already heard what others have to say about RE4 in many of the past topics, which is why we think of it as another RE4 thread.
In Response to the topic, I too loved Resident Evil 4. And Noob I agree I didn't really like the old camera angles either.
IMO the story wasn't even as bad as a lot of people think.
And Seperate Ways makes RE4 Two different games in 1.
The gameplay was the best I've ever experienced!
The Upgrade Weapons System: 10
Graphics: 10
Character Development: 10
Game Play: 10
Game Length: 10
Replay Value (Mercenaries): 10
Sure the base enemies (Ganados) were not as difficult to defeat like in the other games, but some of the stronger enemies were a lot more challenging than any of those in the previous games. Like the soldier with gatling gun, Verdigo, Regenerators and the huge invisible grass hoppers.
