Yeah, there was. As mentioned in this thread, it wasn't successful at all. The problem is that you need to keep the captions and the images you are captioning together, which gets confusing if someone replies with a caption and it's not clear what picture they are talking about. That's why I suggested using the photo album in your user profile. Just title the album "Caption This!" and upload images. Each image can be commented on and thus, captioned.
