I think RE is alive and well. I hope that RE 5 can take the gameplay elements of 4 and have a story that is not paper thin. I think the developers are trying to bring the horror back to the game but RE will never be like the original few games were.

I'm not denying that Capcom is trying to do some damage control, even though I think it's a lost cause with RE4 in the Canon. But I highly doubt RE5 will be anymore scary than RE4 was.

RE was not only about jump-out-and-go-boo scares, but about a brooding, dark, dreading atmosphere. RE4 possessed none of it, and RE5 looks like it too.

It would be redeemable if RE's storyline at least stayed serious. They're turning it into a live-action looking anime, with its Salazars, Sergeis and Bird women.
Yes, Resident Evil has always had a certain level of cliche'd characters. But they used to be cliche' characters from Hollywood action movies. Now they're cliche' characters from bad Anime.

But to answer the question... As far as production goes, yes, it's dead, to me.
But the REAL Resident Evil will always live on in my T-Virus infected heart.

The truth is, it's dead, and here's why: At one point I had tons of BH comics kept in storage, and on the back of the first page in one of the issue's there was an interview with the creator of BH, Mikami. He said in that interview that when he set out to create the BH serie's, he wanted it to be scary as hell, something to scare the pants off of the player. [something along these lines anyway]

And going by that, the "head honcho" of the original BH wanted a scary serie's, and BH4 is NOT, by any sense of the word.

There were two things that had me on edge the *first* time, but sadly there effects wore off. They were the company of Regenerators, and the whole "oh shit, run from that boulder" moments.

BH as the fans know it, is dead, me thinks.

Personally the RE series will never be dead to me, I will always have that lingering interest of the genre. But as some of you mentioned here, the main interest that attracted most of us to the series in the first place faded away after RE0 (mentioning this one because it was the last installment before the "change"). At least for me.

All in all RE will never be dead. This forum proves it. There is simply too many of us old fans out there that will not forget the memories attached to RE (not excluding others who have a general interest of the game).

                That's my answer.
Adding a numebre at the nedo of RE doesn't mean that the serie si alive. Ahving known character is not sufficient.

And, according to T, RE5 will close many of old past paths. So, from RE6 we we will have a brand new story, wiht some old characters. Not enough to be considered a RE.

Run from the boulder is standard for QTEs. Nothing scary about them, just fuckin' annoying when you don't know which buttons to press (stupid PC port, I tell you).

I have to agree with Jill Boob on this one. As much as I loved the old RE games I think that the series needed a refreshion. A lot of people here hate RE 4 and I know why but you have to understand that it was 4 that kept the series alive, the hooked man (beta version of RE 4) could't be a sucess.

Do you think RE series are already DEAD?
I'll tackle this from 2 angles.

My interest in the story has certainly waned in past years. Though I am interested in the games, I don't really care where they take the story anymore. It's Capcom's baby, they can do whatever they like with it. You (meaning no one in particular) don't have to like it. Anyone who thinks that Capcom must answer to their fans is delusional. The only people that Capcom must deliver to are their shareholders, and as such, the series will die when it is no longer profitable. Though I can't forsee that happening for many many many many years.

As I said, my interest has certainly waned. I still enjoy the games immensely, especially the old ones. I must ask myself why I fell in love with them so many years ago. The main reason was the 'realistic' story. It was so closely linked to reality. I really got the impression that this could happen in the real world.
Then the more I studied genetics, the more I realised how much nonsense it is. Like how you sometimes hear about some musicians who say they can't enjoy classical music anymore, because they've studied it for years, and can't help but over-analyze it. In my case it doesn't help that the over arching story has become more and more farcical with each entry.

It's obvious that the series hasn't had a long term narrative from the beginning, with all the ret-cons and remakes and re-releases and ports that we've seen over the years. I find it particularly frustrating how convoluted the story has become, when early on, it was relatively concise and straight-forward. In my opinion we haven't had a sequel logically continue from a predecessor since Biohazard 2 followed the release of Biohazard 1.

I still enjoy the games heaps (even the controversial ones!). It's just that I don't care so much for the series' future, at least no where near as much as I used to. Chalk it up to me getting older, more educated, more cynical, or just busier. This arrangement works fine for me . I don't have any pre-concieved ideas about what Resident Evil should be. If the games stop being enjoyable (at least on a gameplay level), I won't have a big bawwww, I'll just go and take my business elsewhere.

You're just being cynical. Game series that last as long as Resident Evil are destined to go through a change at some point in time. Just because you don't agree with the change doesn't change the fact that Resident Evil is still Resident Evil.

The principles that defined the series in 1996 and up to RE4 are dead, so essentially the original series is dead. RE4 marked a new start and given the anticipation and general hype leading to RE5, the series' legacy is far from dead.

Like any Hollywood franchise, it'll only be truly dead when it stops making money.

Now if we were to gauge is from a personal interest point of view, then yes. I still love the old games and anticipate a PSN release of BH3, but I'm not looking forward to anything new. It's at a point where I may, or may not buy RE5 (and for every lost fan, there are 3 to replace him/her). I don't care about its future since it's not a way of life, it's entertainment.

My view of gaming in general is similar, so I'm rarely picking up games nowadays and when I do, it's after a rental. I don't like the dominant genres, and the old ones that I enjoyed are scarce or require too much of a commitment to be fun as intended (1-2 hour trips).
