But with scenes like Steve's death, I just sat there like... "This guy's a goof..."
Exactly...subtle. Subtle is good. The Steve/Claire thing was even more far-fetched than Leon/Ada in RE2. Everything about Steve Burnside just sucked on so many levels. "I love you, Claire." Yeah right! And then you have the entire RE4+ Leon character...where women everywhere swoon for him and he's so charming & ultra-cool! Barf.

That's why the Chris/Jill pairing in RE1 has always been fascinating to me. It was subtle and you could miss the clues if you blink, but the evidence is there. It's charming in it's simplicity.

The prison cell hug, the ending where she falls asleep on his shoulder (REmake), or cozying up & holding hands (RE1). Then there's the ending where Chris isn't rescued: "It's okay. He's alive. I just know." (Plus you see that Barry is aware of it too.)

Then you can see how they are at least best friends, with Jill's devotion in her RE3 epilogue. Plus the fact that they are partners again in 2003.

Just the fact that Jill's tombstone is shown in RE5, continues to build upon the little things hinted at in RE1.

No, I'm a normal person, I meant Sherry when she's LEGAL.

I really don't know where they went with that Carlos thing in RE3, though. I mean, they seemed like they weren't sure whether they were coming or going. Carlos obviously grew to care about Jill in those few days. And she had her vulnerable moments when she leaned on Carlos (figuratively), too. But then in the end, it was like, "Well, let's go our separate ways. I'm going to find Chris, you go rot in Resident Evil's oblivion along with Rebecca.

People always think that there was supposed to be something in RE3 between Carlos & Jill. I don't remember anything of the sort, although I haven't played RE3 in years. I remember him being interested, but I never saw any indication from Jill that she felt the same. Besides, her epilogue says:

Pretty cut & dry. Jill abandoned Carlos like I abandoned the house of that girl I met online when Chris Hansen showed up.

Then there's the people who comment on the Jill & Carlos "results" picture, where they are side-by-side on a boat of some sort. (I think it is a ferry, while others say it is a romantic cruise ship.) They are just standing side-by-side, while both looking detached and sad. Jill even has her own arms wrapped around herself...hardly the sign of romantic interest.

They look calm and at peace. Not sad.

Doesn't Jill kiss Carlos or something? Either way, I still think it was just a fling, nothing more.

I'm sure that anything between Jill and Carlos was of the same caliber as between her and Chris after RE1. Yeah, people might get the feeling of attachment in a situation like that. But I don't think she's got anything going on with either of them.

If there was any romance in the series, I'd rather it stay with only Jill and Chris. They are the only two that I could actually see working out. Carlos flirted with Jill, but I think that was more of a macho thing. And if I remember correctly...he only did that once when they first met. When he found out she could have probably kicked his ass, he didn't seem to want to piss her off.

Leon and Ada...ugh. Leon is a wanna be player, and Ada is a liar (possibly working for the enemy too which would go against Leon's good guy/hero of the universe deal). Not to mention their eternal love bloomed in a few short hours...when the entire time Ada was using Leon. Right...and if she really cared for him RE4 would have ended in an entirely different way.

Claire and Steve...hmm...again...Claire is just trying to get things done, and Steve is being a typical lonely, horny teenager. Besides...he's dead...or at least will probably never show up in the series again.

I honestly wish they would take the romance aspect out of the game. It's almost like people feel obligated to start pairing people off. It is possible for a guy and a girl to work together without suddenly developing a frantic need to bone them.

                        ^ Agree.

The charm about Chris & Jill is that it was never forced down your throat, like all the others. I guess that is why it was endearing to me, and their relationship is the only one I care about. And, like Mist said, they actually seem to complement each other.

All the other in-game "relationships"...they lack any appeal.

With any and all romance in the series, it's gotta be at the end. And I mean end end. Yes, something could happen between Chris and Jill, but it would have to happen AFTER they're done with their priorities, which are killing evil overdramatic villains.

People want romance because they wanna bang the girl, or guy, but since they can't, the best next thing is to let someone else do it... at least that's how I feel.

                              ^Umm, what?

The fictional relationship of the characters in the game is just part of the storytelling process. And whenever you have a male lead & a female lead, most people expect some sort of romantic subplot.

Personally, I guess it is okay, if it is done correctly and doesn't detract from the game.

But it's the most difficult NOT to detach when you're dealing with horror.
But yeah, when there's 2 sides to something, there's always an expectation to pair them up in one way or another.

For example, in Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. When I was on the forums at MKO, everyone, and I mean EVERYONE was like, trying to figure out who would be whose 'nemesis' from the other side. Like who would be the perfect match to fight against one another. I thought it was kind of stupid.

But yeah, it's most often done with romance. And I think it's just because it's been so overdone in hollywood movies, that people just expect it.
