I don't have a problem with Jill dying in this game. She served her purpose and Capcom is making her a side character in RE 5. She's nothing more than a plot device now.

This post is gonna cause some controversy, but oh well, I think this needs to be said:
I'm sorry, but if someone decides to abandon a game series because their favorite character dies, I think that's just plain ridiculous. Abandon it because you don't like the new gameplay, or you don't like the new direction...but if you exalt a character over the actual plot and storyline, I don't see how you can call yourself a fan of the series. Call yourself a fan of the character, maybe, but not the series.Last edited by Vector; 02-22-2009, 11:10 PM.

By the logic that they wont play anymore Resident Evil games if Jill dies, they shouldn't be playing any game that doesnt involve her. Did they not play CVX or RE4? Did they not play RE2? Now I can see losing interest in the series if a favored character dies or as in what I expect to happen...the Chris/Jill/STARS arc being over. If the next plot details dont interest you...then dont play. A straightup fanboyish boycott of a game though just because one character dies is lame.
Unfortuantly I do feel there are alot of people that would give up on the series if Jill died completly. I personally know people who lost interest with 4 just because it wasn't Umbrella-centric. They eventually did try it, loved the game play but hated the story. Jill is unfortuantly surrounded by a huge fanbase following...most are reasonable..in that they havent elevated her to be above the game series itself...others are not and will most notably boycott the games after this.
I hardly think it matters, after this game...live or die...I think anyone involved with STARS will have a finished and closed up story.Last edited by Darinl1979; 02-22-2009, 11:23 PM.

at redfield: CVX and onward *so maybe I'm being judgemental as it's only been in 2-3 games but that's how I feel about it* And I'm not attacking anyone with my posts either so don't get the wrong idea.*I've had that problem on other sites* as for the above post I know, I just think I'm starting to see a reaccuring trend with the current games*I've seen to many series I used to like start to use recycled plotlines* my opinion nothing more.Last edited by ValentineKnight; 02-22-2009, 11:48 PM.

RE4 was about someone trying to take over the world with their 'virus' by infecting the US President's daughter and having her bring the virus back to America. RE4 has, arguably, the weakest story of any Resident Evil game. Calling out any other game on a story as bad as RE4's would be silly.

Eventually the characters will become stale unless theres a big change to them. This includes Jill. You can only throw someone into a situation where they have to fight for their lives...in a mansion, a city or whatever so many times before people start to realize theres no way anyone could be that unlucky. They had to move away from the surviving type games where the only mission was to seemingly stay alive, and make it action oriented but still focused on facing things you dont understand.
Seeing as this is a Jill thread, lets use her as an example. She survived the mansion incident and the story seamlessly transitioned into a city becoming infected with her trying to escape. It worked great. She seemingly met up with Chris and decided to fight bio terror. Do you see where things changed? Its not about surviving anymore but also about fighting to prevent another Raccoon City. The next time we saw Jill she was going into an Umbrella hidden lab WILLINGLY to stop a bio weapon. Thats going to have action all over it. If you were to throw Chris and Jill into some...I dont know, trap or situation where it was almost like a repeat of RE1...it would be a hard sell. Almost any game involving these characters...whether it be Chris, Claire, Jill etc...is not going to work by throwing them in a situation where they faced the same kind of struggle they did in previous games. Instead it will be them bringing the fight to someone.

I personally dont think theres any coming back from what Jill went through, even if she doesnt die...I think if brought back to her senses her PTSD would be even worse then Chris's shown in the viral videos. But who knows. Also as much as I like Jill, her popularity is over exaggerated sometimes. From the time the game was announced for the first half of 2008...no one really seemed to mind Jill not being in the game...or had no interest in her at all. Once she was apparently "killed" though...it sparked alot of interest. For the most part...everyone though Jills story had nothing more to it.
Originally posted by ValentineKnight View PostI did...I was hoping she'd come back as a playable character ever since I played the REmake then I heard she died and well...I actually got depressed for a week or 2 dudes no joke...I guess I'm weird and must REALLY like Jill )
the next day i was playing through the classics, and was sorta in disbelief, i couldn't believe that Jill was dead, i just would not accept it.
Originally posted by ValentineKnight View PostWell if she dies they'll most likely bring her back I've been to alot of gaming sites and alot of people say they'll leave the series if Jill dies*less fans= less money* Some have even said they'll write Capcom if she dies. I'm not being a fanatic I'm just stating what I've seen.As for me if Jill dies I won't be playing any new REs the series has already lost it's luster to me it isn't scary to me anymore and I dislike the current gameplay engine So Jill's the only reason I still hold on to it if she gos I'll just play the REmakes,0 and CVX.
and i don't think it's stupid or anythign to do so, quite honestly, i myslef don't care as much about the story as i used ot. i Hate the new gameplay style. there are no more zombies in it. and umbrella is gone. what reason do i have to play RE now that it's the complete opposite of why i liked it in the first place. RE was just hanging by a thread before i quit it anyway, and now Jill's gone. that's it, RE is dead to me. why? because there is nothing in RE that i actualy like or enjoy anymore.

I am Not abandoning the series simply because Jill died.
I Am abandoning the series because.
1. there are no more camera angles.
2. Umbrella is now dead.
3. no more zombies
4. we now have crappy parasite monsters.
5. it's not survival horror anymore.
6. it's no longer within the Raccoon City region.
7. the Absence of Rebecca and Barry
8. Wesker is super powered, as well as Chris.
9. I Hate the new style of gameplay.
10. it's now more about action and shooting rather than survival and exploration.
11. and finnally, because they killed my favorite character off, Jill Valentine.
Originally posted by ValentineKnight View PostWell then I won't call myself a fan of the series as I only like the originals and Jill So I'll label myself a Jill fan and this post will cause some controversy but I think the story became stale Along time ago as most of them feature the same crap now someone tries to rule the world with a virus and the heros wreck his plan and Wesker always sneaks in a win

or better yet, have more games set back in Raccoon City, that place is my favorite gameing location in existence, i would love it if every RE from here to the end of time was set in Raccoon City.

I was going to do a bunch of quotes, but I am too lazy so Ill just reply to things in seperated paragraphs.
I wouldnt laugh at you for feeling attached to a character. Ive gone through my own fanboyism with game and tv series characters so I can relate. I dont think I was affected by hearing about Jill in the same way as you though. When I first heard she was dead, my first reaction was that she'd be a BoW at some point in the game. I was mainly disappointed that there wasnt an explanation to how she died, but once it became clear that was part of the story...I was less disappointed.
I can relate to how you feel about the story. I kind of feel like if they kill Wesker, even if everyone else survives...I wonder if I can still keep my interest. Unless they can keep the story going in a way that will interest me I most likely wont be as anxious for the next game as I am this one. Having a series like this really ends up depending on the character development. The first games werent done perfectly but you still enjoyed them and grew fond of the characters and plot developments. Now with next-gen graphics...I am more interested in finding out about Chris,Jill,Wesker and what role Umbrella has more then anything. Sure, Excella intrigues me but probably not enough to anticipate a game for well over a year.
I do agree with Jill not being just a side character. She might not be the main focus of the game but will still end up being an important part of it. I consider her one of the main 4 character of the canon part of the series. That doesnt mean shes immortal and cant die or have intriguing plot twists.
I dont mind there not being any zombies, that really doesnt bother me. Generic Majini or Ganados fill the role of "easy to kill but high quanity bad guys" enemies just as well. The new gameplay is fine, but I cant say I dont miss the old formula. Resident Evil Remake had it done down to perfection and its a real shame that only Zero followed it. More games with that formula would of been nice but I can understand and see why it changed. As far as Raccoon City goes, well its long gone but clearly still is important to the lore of RE. I dont think they could of done anything else with it.

I feel that Jill as a whole will become a major player behind the scenes in 5, with her relationship with Chris being a major focus point as well now that he has a new partner in Sheva and now Jill is.....something else by the looks of things.
As for me leaving the series if she dies.....I was already loosing interest in the series thanks to 4, but funnily enough 5 and it's interesting use of the canon storylines so far and it seeming to want to please the long time fans of the series rather than the newbies that were the main focus of 4 tbh, I am interested more for 5 than I was for 4 and that is a good thing. I will be playing 5 honestly for mainly the storyline alone and to see where it leaves things open for other instalments or puts the nail in the coffin of the series in the end of this new game, but given that RE is still a HUGE franchise and is kind of the Harry Potter for Capcom as is Street Fighter, I feel that we will be expecting more RE titles regardless of how 5's storyline pans out.

Well she might be a side character, just like the others, (rebecca, claire and ada wong)
Because Male characters are the important here.
I disagree with that, she's not just a plot device, all people around forums is discussing about the same thread... "is Jill alive or dead?" does that tell you something?
I would have prefered Rebecca chambers to be cloned, killed or something, since she's pretty useless to the story, but knowing that she failed with her canon and only game RE0, I fear she won't come back again as a main character,
