I guess. But you find out about Nicholai's betrayal a lot earlier, and he does raise suspicions from the beginning.
But then I wouldn't call RE3 RE1 lite, RE3 had a completely different mood from RE1.
If anything, I'd say RE1 is RE2 lite. RE2 followed RE1's formula fairly well. You start off in a lavish fancy building with all kinds of puzzles, then you move onto the underground area, then following that, you get into the labs. At the end you face a Tyrant, and you kill it using the rocket launcher that someone throws to you.
