But, he made his appearance in RE1, and a slight appearance in the end of RE3. I like the character and all, but honestly, what makes him such a big deal?
In RE1, he was sort of cool, because he was much different than the typical video game hero. But, now, with RE5 taking place in 2009, Barry would be 48 or 49 years old.
Now, I am not opposed to a cameo (in a support role or flashback), but I wonder why so many are insistent on Barry receiving a lead role in a future RE game?
He's not that significant to the series, in all honesty.
Barry is super awesome and should be featured in every game ever made ever for the rest of eternity, he deserves it.
Barry is awesome, i would Love to see Barry as RE6's main protagonist, and it would be even cooler if Leon was his apprentice, and they had Barry's RE1 voice actor, and Leon's RE4 vioce actor. it would be epic, every word Barry would speak would be so cheesy he could slay zombies with his words, and Leon's one liner would cause heads to implode.
Barry as the master, Leon as the apprentice, the ultimate Coop gameplay.
Best, game, Ever!

That's funny to me. In the other thread, the "Heroes of RE, IGN Article" thread to be exact, you said yourself that "people who state things as fact annoy me."
Yet here you are, stating that Barry IS awesome and SHOULD be in every game EVER.
Do you always contradict yourself?
As for Barry being "significant" to RE lore...the guy was in (half of) RE1, the end of RE3, and Gaiden (a game even Capcom doesn't consider canon).
In RE1, Barry just disappears from Chris' half of the game, and is never seen again. In Jill's half, he is being blackmailed by Wesker but then comes to his senses and aids his friends. In RE3, Barry appears in an alternate ending where he pilots a chopper to rescue Jill & Carlos Homoliveira. And he gets an epilogue file saying he transported his family to Canada.
The most significant things Barry did was rescue Jill in RE1 and again in 3. But she still kicked the proverbial bucket in 2006, so Barry really only delayed the inevitable.
That's it. That, is, it. Please tell me how I am "mad" that I don't consider Barry to be significant to the RE lore.
If anything, all you have done is furthered the ideal that Barry is indeed a "cult character."
Oh, and for posterity's sake, here is your statement:

Hmm...I'm not sure whether I'm for or against his appearance in Mercenaries.
I mean, he may have a .44 magnum, but how good is he with it? It took him three shots to down a zombie. Then (in a non-canon scenario thank you) when Jill has the gun, she kills the tyrant with one bullet! Plus, what else will be in his inventory, 6 acid rounds, 6 grenade rounds, 6 shotgun shells, and no firearms to go with it? I say good day to Barry.
Ridicule aside, the merc. possibility is the only capacity I can see him in at this point. I mean, people are making a fuss about DLC, so there you go. I recall having an idea for a game that could use Barry as the protagonist. It would cover the age issue (and the image issue that comes with his age); it was in some other thread and I don't remember which. The idea definitely wasn't tongue in cheek, but it was very flimsy nonetheless. In terms of his significance to the series, I'm not bleeding for (despite the statement said post closed with) nor am I expecting anything w/ Barry to come out. I just wouldn't mind discussing hypothetical situations, and having a laugh.

Now, about Barry. I would just like to say he was fun. And different. All the males are stereotypical in RE, or rather, they are much more like each other than like Barry. So, Barry differs.
In a new game, he would be old, a little fat, and kind of silly I guess, if they brought back the same voice actor or a similar one. So, Barry would be cool and fun. I'd just like to see some variety. I like Chris, but he is REALLY generic, Leon is more of a metrosexual guy, but still stereotypical. Barry is definitely different.
Not important to the series? Well, I would say he is important enough.

Now I am not saying Barry is a bad character, I am just trying to understand his "legendary" status. As much as I like him, I do not see nor understand how he is essential to the RE lore. I mean, if any characters are truly key to the RE lore, it is Spencer or Wesker.
A new game taking place in the past, featuring a younger Barry (set in the timeframe after RE1 and before RECV) would be fine in my books. But expecting to see a 50 year old Barry in RE6 would be just ridiculous. But if that's what "fans" want, then hey, let's give Barry cybernetic arms, and a beard cannon.
I like your idea of a Mercs entry for Barry, since it is just a side game.
*I do hope Barry makes a cameo in RE5.

Originally posted by Jill's Boob View PostThank you - that actually sums it up quite well. Now as I said, I like Barry Burton and all, but the level to which he is elevated by folks on here is absurd. Only a cult character could achieve such fame...especially one with a heinous beard and a "punch gut."
The kind of inane turdburglar that loves the military and wants to serve in it, is usually blindly patriotic, and is perfectly willing to throw their miserable lives away in some far away land so they can be "just like Big Boss".
Which to be honest is why I worry a little about Chris. He'll be safe, right? Right?See you in hell.

I'm glad HUNK has remained an enigma of sorts. Yes, his unwarranted fandom led to subsequent appearances (RE4 mercs, his own REUC stage) but they haven't overblown it to a level to completely tarnish his character.
As for Chris - don't worry. The guy was kicked out of the Air Force, remember? I think Chris never had any purpose in his life until after the Arklay incident. Since then, his pursuit of Wesker and desire to stop bio-terrorism has led him back into the structured, militant world...but it's a means to an end. I think with as haggard as he looks in RE5, the guy is ready to retire.
He just wants to complete his mission, kill Wesker, and collect his pension. Then he'll go off to his cabin in the woods and chop down trees for kindling. Except that he'll carry the whole tree trunks back to his cabin by slinging them over his shoulder. And maybe even have a daughter named "Jenny."Last edited by Jill's Boob; 02-14-2009, 04:32 PM.

And then Wesker comes back from the dead - again, kidnaps his daughter and the rest is history. Oh, I don't know now. I mean, we had the Commando storyline set out for Carlos and Nicholai, unless we blend the ideas together and have Chris go after Nicholai? I don't know, my mind needs to think up more original ideas.Last edited by Mr. Spencer; 02-14-2009, 04:55 PM.See you in hell.

I always imagined Nicholai showing up in Chicago, where Chris is now just a regular old police detective. They have to form an uneasy partnership as Sergei has been resurrected and become a crime baron. Forming an uneasy alliance, Chris and Nicholai forget their opposing histories to take down Sergei, once and for all. At the finale, Chris & Nicholai will exchange wristwatches and part ways - knowing they are again enemies.
Barry could even make an appearance, as the loud-mouthed police chief (in the vein of 80's buddy cop films).Last edited by Jill's Boob; 02-14-2009, 05:03 PM.
