  • Been thinking about trying to code another NES Resident Evil

About a year ago, I practiced programming the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System), and I programmed a Resident Evil 1.5 title screen, and I was able to swap in/out ROM banks, and I started importing Gaiden sprites, for the main character.

But lately, I've been thinking about having another go at it, and trying to see if I can come up with something really cool.

I want to make a NES version of 1.5. Other than the actual backgrounds (which I can't use since we don't have all of them anyway), I can make the inventory just like the one in 1.5, and I can make a much better title screen than I did last time.

What I have in mind, is that it will look like Metal Gear for the NES, in terms of style. I don't want completely overhead, and I don't want 2D either. It will look more like Gaiden and Metal Gear.

But these are just thoughts. Actually coding this thing would be a huge project.

But at the very least, I might put together the 1.5 inventory screen, and you can see what it looks like on the NES.

I have been inspired by the GameBoy Color version of Resident Evil, the original Resident Evil, 1.5, and 3.5 Hooked Zombie version.

Who knows, I might want to program something similiar to 3.5.

I want atmosphere and horror in my game. And lots of blood. Resident Evil 1.5 had all of that.

If I knew how to code 3D stuff, I would make it like the Resident Evil GBC, but I don't know how to do that, so it would have to be overhead or 2D.

Just some ideas and thoughts I've been thinking of lately. I want to try to do something though.

I found the NES version of RE in a pack of roms ..it was a little buggy but a lot of fun on psp. I've been messing around with Lua code to make a interactive 1.5 thing myself. But it's going slow due to lack of conformity ( picture quality and resizing ) and bad organizing.

Would be nice to see another NES game though.

You can download it here: http://www.compmike19.com/id420.htm

But as much as it was fun (at least better than Gaiden) it was buggy as hell. The game tends to freeze every few seconds (yes, seconds) so it requires to quick save/load very often.
It's basically RE1 in Gaiden's style (along with the crappy aiming system); the only difference is that there's no Guard house, few bosses and enemies were removed and (from what I remember) ammo packs don't mix - so even if you have two ammo packs with just one bullet in both, you can't combine them to make one ammo box.
