IGN - "The Best Resident Evil?"

IGN recently held a poll asking readers which Resident Evil they thought was the best of the bunch. Unsurprisingly, Resident Evil 4 destroyed the competition with 59% of the votes. Resident Evil 2 came in second place with only 17% of the votes.

4 is quite obviously the best game. Unpopular opinion around here, but that's the way it is. And it's also quite obvious that RE4 was going to crush the competition in this list. It's by far the best rated and highest selling RE game (all iterations considered).

Gameplay-wise, for the "new generation" of gamers, maybe. Story-wise, it's quite atrocious...no one can deny that.

Totally. Worst storyline by far in the canon series. But, yes, in terms of gameplay I don't think the old games come close to 4. And just because I'm new to this site doesn't mean I'm new to the series. I've been with this franchise since the week RE1 came out on the PS1 in '96, and even I can admit that 4 and 5 are just much better games than the others.

Call it a personal opinion and get it over with instead of insisting on it as if were a fact. The new style is mainstream action with the hallmark controls of the series slightly modified. The original games were all about exploration and solving puzzles with some action.

They're different and you're not going to convince anyone that one is better than the other; it's just preference and older fans do prefer the original style better.

It's because if someone thinks RE4 is the best game in the series, they're automatically branded by the groupthink as a) never having played an RE game before in their life, b) not having been with the series since the beginning, c) not hardcore enough of a fan, or any derivation of the above.

It's the same kind of elitist b.s. that you find in any fandom, and a lot of people on this site are guilty of it, though perhaps not quite as many as, say, REHorror.

Just because you've heard it before doesn't make it any less true.

If anything, people need to be reminded of it more often, because whenever someone says their favorite game in the series is RE4, the usual suspects all come down on that person at once to tell them how "wrong" they are. It's really no different than what you're accusing the poster above you of.

Resident Evil 2 is actually Capcom's best selling RE.

It's really no different than what you're accusing the poster above you of.

Read his post and then mine. There is difference between saying that one style is better than another and being neutral in the sense of acknowledging it's a matter of preference. I've merely expressed strong preference to the old series. Cubed basically said that "as an old fan" he can admit that RE4/5 are much better... which is subjective and I replied that it's an opinion and ended it with that remark since I hear that claim oh so often.

When I say that neither style is definitively superior to the other, it's the truth. Then when I also said that older fans prefer the old style better, it's also truthful, or would you prefer if I said "most" old fans?
