  • Has RE4 lost it's charm for anyone else?

When I first got the game, I loved it. Don't get me wrong, I love (and prefer) how 0-CVX played, but when I first played RE4 it was a refreshing change. All the way through my first playthrough I loved the game and I thought it was one of the best Resident Evils yet. But then on subsequent playthroughs, it just became a chore to play. I missed the older games and how they played and RE4 was just missing something for me.

I'm playing through it now and it's getting to the point where I'm actually sighing when I realise what I have to do now. The whole game gets very....tiring after the Village, which is the only part of the game I truly still enjoy. I hate the Castle section and the Island is only a slight improvement.

I guess this all comes off as a Resident Evil 4 sucks thread, but there are things about it I like....none spring to mind right now but there is something that keeps making me play it again, even if it feels like a chore.

Does anyone else feel the same way?

The village has always been my favorite part.

I wouldn't say it feels like a chore to me. I don't play that often. Very rarely in fact. Anything would start feeling like a chore if you do it all the time.

Because RE4's replay value is lacked.
      I quote GameSpot on REDS:
"You know a games a classic when you go back and have just as much fun as you did the first time you played it."
I have replayed RE2 about 23 times, and I have replayed RE4 once, ONCE.
There is something missing, and that is replay value as a whole, I never went through it once I finished it, and came back to it two years later, after that, I didn't wanna play it again.
It's just a very tedious game on subsequent playthroughs.

Wow, I don't know about you guys, but I've replayed RE4 so many times. Probably over a hundred. The only game I've played more is RE3.

RE4 is so much fun to play. In a Tetris kind of way. Just kidding. I used to play it a lot, especially the Mercenaries. Both the RE3 and RE4 Mercenaries were great.

only part in RE4, besides disc swapping on the GC, is that area where you have to crank the levers...go up the stairs and hoist Ashley up and protect her while Ganados attack you....most annoying part ever!!!

other than that, I can play it over and over again getting to the Krauser knife fight

Which is why it tends to confuse me when RE4 is heralded as an amazing game. Doesn't the fact that it has very little replay value damage how good the game is as a whole?

That is one of the moments where Disc 2 is awesome, yes

Actually, all my favourite parts on Disc 2 were Krauser related I think.

I personally feel RE4's story is its biggest downfall.

I can accept the COMPLETE overhaul to the gameplay, and admittedly enjoy it somewhat but what annoys me is the obvious rework of the story to suit new players to the series. The story of 4 is weak and is a basic standalone story that anybody, who has never played the other games, can enjoy.

This is my biggest problem with 4. After investing close to (if not more than) 10 years in the Resident Evil series and our heroes plight against Umbrella, Capcom sold us fans out with an Umbrella detroyed by the stock exchange!! grr! The only nods to the old games for us long term fans is the inclusion of Leon, Wesker and Ada.

I dont mean to sound like an original fan hating on the new Resi because Im not. As i said, I do enjoy the gameplay but Capcom could have made the transition from classic Resi to new, more smoothly. I mean a subtle change of adding Sherry as the blonde haired 20 year old damsel in distress as opposed to plot device Ashley would have been more fitting and would have at least felt like a continuation of some of the plot in the overall resi mythos. (I still have a sneaking suspicion that Ashley's inclusion over Sherry was a last minute change!)

i feel like im kind of waffling now and rambling so i'll sum up. RE4 does not hold up after time because its very hard to invest in its story, or lack therof. Its a good game which is fun to blast away through but for the majority is what i would call a ''cutscene skipper''. When I feel like booting up the game these days, I usually load up Seperate Ways as I personally feel this game has more ties with the overall Resi story. I am hoping that from what I am seeing of 5, that its purpose seems to be to not only tie up the Umbrella arc but to actually integrate that arc with Las Plagas. If pulled off successfully, it may just succeed in slotting RE4 into the story of Resident Evil as a whole, and maybe the next time we play through 4, the story may seem more relevant. If this happens, well done Capcom on a difficult task.

I think it's just the fighting that amazes fans, I mean the whole kicking Ganado arse BOOM HEADSHOTing them is replay in itself, other than that nothing too redeeming. If it had GC downloadable content then we could see some replay value.

Yeah disc 2 was amazing, the whole Island assault from the cave through the facility and the scary regenerators...insta classic!

I played the game again on the Wii some weeks ago, and still love it, to me this is the kind of game (like the old RE games) that never gets old.

RE4 lost it's charm as soon as i started my first playthrough.

that is so true, i could replay through the classics for ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever. but i couldn't bring myself to play through RE4 more than twice. in fact, when i do play throughs of the entire series, i find myself often just skipping RE4 completely. it's boring.

I don't think the characters help either. Leon annoyed me, Ashley was very one-dimensional to me (and has to be the most annoying character in the series to boot), Ada was far better in 2 and only Mendez and Krauser interested me out of the villains. Bad characters leads to a bad story.

I actually liked RE4 Leon and Ada much better than RE2 Leon and Ada. Ashley was annoying, I agree here.

I replayed RE4 twice and liked both playthroughs - the second being with the Chicago Typewriter just so I could blast my way through it. Replay value differs with people, but I could only imagine a good amount of time has to pass before playing it again without the "... eh I just did this LAST playthrough :/"
