You people seem to be misinterpreting what the game was trying to achieve in this regard; not that your were in zombie apocalypse, but you were watching a film of a zombie apocalypse where you had limited control over an avatar. The cameras are placed stylistically as they would be placed in a horror film. It does this far more successfully than any modern attempt at cinematic game play; point out a film where a single handicam over-the-shoulder shot is used for it's entirety? One will never be made.
Resident Evil is a 'film world'. There is nothing ridiculous in a film world, not even archaic puzzles that are somewhat useless from the point of security (if the average gamer can solve it, it's not particularly secure).
Not that Resident Evil is entirely preposterous; it tries to emulate reality in a number of ways. For example, just how many soldiers have you seen shooting while running?
and no modern game with a crappy FPS or TPS view will ever feel like that, it's always gonna feel like a game, unless it has the camera angles.
i really loved the positioning of the camera's, and the film styles they used. i believe it's called mise en scene or something like that. it's how they place the camera at specific points to acheive a certain mood or feeling, and the do it in RE which is why i love the camera angles so much.
