1. noting or pertaining to a long poetic composition, usually centered upon a hero, in which a series of great achievements or events is narrated in elevated style: Homer's Iliad is an epic poem.
2. resembling or suggesting such poetry: an epic novel on the founding of the country.
3. heroic; majestic; impressively great: the epic events of the war.
4. of unusually great size or extent: a crime wave of epic proportions.
Epic. What is epic? Epic is something so great, so spectacular, so unbelievably amazing that when it happens, you know right away that you have just experienced something special...so special, you cannot put it into words -- no -- you can only put it in one word...and that word, is EPIC.
Epic is Metal Gear Solid 4's final boss fight. Epic is Old Snake vs. Liquid Ocelot fistfighting on top of a majestic warship, Outer Haven, set against the sun setting with a glowing fury of a war coming to an end, a seemingly endless battle coming to an end, a series coming to an end, a saga of 20 years...coming to an end. It was 9 years of torment. It was brother vs. brother(so we thought at the time), it was enemy vs. enemy, it was soldier vs. soldier. It was "errrgh LIIIQUIIIIIIIIIID!!!" It was "...Ssssnnaaaaaake!" It was "You're pretty good!" It is this.
EVERYTHING about this battle...was truly, truly epic.
Whew. Allow me to collect myself.
...
This brings me to Resident Evil 5.
Chris vs. Wesker.
Some of the factors that made MGS4's final fight epic can be compared with Resident Evil 5:
a war coming to an end
Chris's war comes to an end. A war against bioterrorism? No, that war could go on forever, but this is a start. This war is more about Chris's war against one Albert Wesker. Albert Wesker and Chris Redfield, mortal enemies.
a seemingly endless battle coming to an end
- In 1998, Wesker tried to kill Chris, and in doing so, killed many of his friends and co-workers, in cold blood, for his own benefit. What could be more selfish? What else could cause such hatred? Well...months later...
- Wesker targets Chris's sister, his own flesh and blood, nearly killing her, and definitely backhanding her down a flight of stairs. He nearly killed his sister, and then threw Chris a good old country ass-whooping, ending with Chris narrowly escaping thanks to an explosion and a conveniently placed group of hanging steel poles.
- Wesker and Chris meet again, if not face to face, in Russia in 2003. Chris and Wesker never come face-to-face, but Wesker once again uses Chris as a lab rat of sorts, a tool if you will, as Chris defeats T-A.L.O.S. with the help of Jill, his partner and presumed love interest.
- And now, this same presumed love interest, this same partner of many years, is Wesker's new tool(presumably). Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine...it's been that way for a while. They, along with Chris, are the staples of the Resident Evil franchise. They started it all. There's an apparent, unspoken or unseen connection between Chris and Jill. They care for each other very much. Jill's diary in RE3 "Chris" this, and "Chris" that. You get the idea. We're led to believe that in RE5, Wesker has something to do with A. Jill's "death", B. Jill's "appearance" or C. both of these scenarios.
So, to sum all of the in-game stuff up, Wesker murdered Chris's friends and co-workers, tried to murder him, then he tried to kill his sister, then he manipulated Chris once more, and NOW he's going after Chris's woman. Sprinkle in the fact that all of this has been allowed to sink in and sizzle in Chris's brain over a 10 year time period...and you have what needs to be an epic confrontation that ends Resident Evil 5.
Now for the external factors...the things that go on 'outside' of the video games:
a series coming to an end
- If the Chris Redfield/Jill Valentine/Albert Wesker storyline comes to an end, then in my mind and many others, Resident Evil has ended. Nevermind the new gameplay and companies and the lack of Umbrella, the series' main driving force has been its characters - Chris, Jill and Wesker. Once their storylines wrap up, Resident Evil is wrapped up. Sure, a Resident Evil 6 may come out, but if Chris/Jill/Wesker are done, what else is there? Leon's working for the government -- okay. Claire is a babysitter, as seen in Degeneration -- uh huh. Rebecca, Barry, Billy, Carlos and the rest of them are all swept under a bed somewhere. Seriously. Once the Redfield/Valentine/Wesker storyline comes to an end...Resident Evil comes to an end. You can call it Resident Evil 6, but, come on now. (I'm sure some will disagree with me on this, or say that the series died when Umbrella died or whatever, but go ahead and flame away -- that's what messageboards are for)
a saga coming to an end
Resident Evil started out in 1996. It is now 2009. 2009. Think about it. It's been almost 13 years since Resident Evil first debuted. Has it really been that long? Jesus...it makes me feel old. I'm only 20 years old, but the fact that I was 7 or 8 when I first experienced Resident Evil makes me feel like an old bastard...either that, or time has absolutely flown by. This is what makes RE5 a potentially emotional experience. Almost 13 years invested into a game series...just like with Metal Gear Solid, where I had invested 10. MGS is my favorite series of all time with RE as a close second, so forgive me for the comparisons, but it's how I feel.
...
So here we are. Chris vs. Wesker at the end of RE5 - HOPEFULLY. How will it be done? Everything I've outlined here has led me to this(a friend said it best): The final battle between Chris and Wesker in RE5 better leave me with "my jaw agape for 10 days." That's how epic it needs to be. EVERYTHING Chris and Wesker have been through, EVERYTHING the series has been through -- it all...comes down...to this. This battle better be given justice. There needs to be a very long cutscene, there needs to be a fistfight of some sorts, there needs to be bloodshed, sweat and tears. There needs to be profanity, there needs to be pure, unadulterated emotion, there needs to be...epicness.
And let me just say this to make sure you all understand:
HAVING ANYONE OTHER THAN CHRIS REDFIELD KILL ALBERT WESKER WOULD BE ABSOLUTELY LUDICROUS.
I go back to MGS4 one last time(I promise).Let me just say this...nothing...NOTHING will EVER be as epic as that final battle in MGS4. So, with that being said, if RE5's final fight can be, oh, I don't know, 70-80% as epic as MGS4's, I will be a happy, happy little 7 year old boy again.
Chris vs. Wesker.
Please, Capcom, please, make it epic.
END

I hope some of this made sense. I really do. My head is spinning right now. I hope I got my point across through all the commas and italics and bolded words and dictionary definitions. I hope.
Dammit, Rosetta, see what you did to me?
