Thoughts on RE5, start to finish

When I said RE4 had a scarier atmosphere, I meant how it actually had rain and fog, thunder, lightning. All these add to the atmosphere. RE5 had sunlight.
Walking thought the spanish village at night time during a thunderstorm, hearing them breath in the background, was scarier than anything in RE5. Again, RE4 was not that scary, but a little more than RE5. Another part of it obviously has to do with the co-op, as that also subtracts from the horror aspect. In RE4, your alone in a spanish village. While in RE5, you are in Kijuju with a small anti-terrorism force.Last edited by Mr. Kennedy; 03-18-2009, 02:51 PM.

In fact, as much as I despised the ridiculous nature of the Jill fight, I loved the music for the fight, especially when combined with Chris' desperate attempts to reason with her. The first time I went through that sequence, as Chris got smacked down by Jill, he slowly struggles to his feet and continues his efforts to snap her out of it while this wonderful music plays - "Jill! It's me, Chris!" - These two partners forced to fight each other.

Well, heres my two cents on the game
What i loved ( off the top of my head)
Graphics- Best looking game i have played, better then MGS 4 imo. Both the actual graphical power, as well as the art direction and design is one of the best i have ever witnessed, a huge huge plus too me. There was a little jaggy looks here and there, but nothing to complain about.
Gameplay- I thought the gameplay as a whole was very very fun. I still think the Re classic controls, and Re4 camera are the most fun i have had in a game, and i sincerly hope they brign it back into Re6, or at leats a variant of it.
Characters- I thought all the characters were nicely done. They were fleshed out for the most part ( help from the files) and the main characters all felt nicely done, chris and wesker especially
Extras- Unreal amount of stuff. This game will be spinning in my ps3 for many months to come. Costumes, new weapons, infinte ammo, vet and pro, mercenaries, play as sheva, library, trophies, emblems, etc etc. The amount of post game content is astounding, best ever.
What i didnt like in the game
Length- The game was defintly shorter then Re4, and i would have loved for a longer Re5, make the wesker battle with mroe stages, add in some flashbacks and cutsceens here and tehre, extend the opening village levels, it could have added alot more to the first playthrough.
Sheva- Honestly didnt like her, i didnt like the liens she had in the game, and i didnt like her ending line with wesker. I didnt midn playing as her, and i liek her backstory, she just gets on my nervers..lol
No Online pause- I feel like they didnt think this out. Online you cant pause, and i hate holding it in, or having to type out to this person brb. It would have been nice to be able to pause the game, that way your partner knows somethings up, and if they arent happy about it, they can just leave. Need a pause button.
No Save rooms and typewriters - They could have added it in, it would have been cool too. Maybe a way to escape enemies, i loved that feeling in the classics of not knowing what was behind the door, and breathign a sigh of relief when that familiar music came on. Typewriters need to come back.
One save system- I dont like taht you have to buy your old equipment back if you ever want a challeneg again. When i wen online, peopel would join with infinite weapons, and take out every enemy, when i had a lone handgun and a weak shotty. I wish we could have had multiple saves, and a way to coop with low level players only when you want.
End of Wesker- I knew it had to happen, it would be a let down to have anotehr " Well meet again Chris" But he was theb est villain of all time. And they killed him so definitvily, its hard to think hell com back, although im sure he will being its Re , he is so popular, and Takeuchi mentioned that he could play a role in the future. The volcano battle felt a little rushed, i would have appreciated a more sentimental end, with cutscenes, dialgoue, it was epic, but not quite enough.
Should have been in/ would like to see in Re6
- More mercs characters , only 4 is a bit of a letdown
- A seperate ways mission - we could play as jill, or maybe wesker , and we would love it! Playing before or during the events of Re5 would be awesome with a different perspective, new cutsceens and plot revealed.
- More classic enemies
- More classic horror and survival elements implemented.
- More cutscenes
- the TGS 07 and Cap 08 traielrs looked much better then the actual game, in terms of pacing, vibe, enemy numbers, and solo..i would love to have played those araes with only chris
Well despite this long list of negatives, this game was so epic, tehse are all smal compared to the mountain of positives i loevd about it. A great game.

So far this is my opinion:
+ Great graphics.
+ Great change of setting (from the town, to the marshlands, the refinery, and so on)
+ Tons of weapons and classic RE guns returning (Gattling Gun, Grenade Launcher)
+ Tribal majinis, best localized enemy.
+ Figurines are amazingly detailed (are actually the game's models so they look fantastic)
+ Jill's evil makeover and explanation of new look (no one goes clean with Nemesis, no one)
+ Superb direction of cutscenes (Sonzero, you're my new hero)
+ Perfect musical score (so epic! it really pumps you up!)
+ Lickers! (they are a pain in the ass, but still rule!)
+ More action commands (I love to break necks and save bullets at the same time).
+ Finally we know who is Spencer and his true intentions (insane old bastard...)
+ Wesker's "Version" of the G-Virus: Uroboros.
+ Sheva character. I really dig her, but probably will go to the Phantom Zone of the under-rated RE Characters (along with Barry Burton, Hunk and Billy Coen).
- Weak plot points (rips too much from MGS)
- AI (I knew about the "Attack" mode, but still the AI piss bullets, horrible during Wesker's boss fights) However Sheva has an excellent aiming (the rotating elevator, she owned them all).
- Short use of characters (new ones become disposable).
- Disappointing ending - Should be more epic, not the typical "gimme rocket launcher, shoot and kill boss, take the chopper and let's get the hell outta here because everything is gonna blow" style. This is truly the end of the main series plot and they give us this?
- Chris going on steroids. I think the reason he beefed up is to try to match Wesker somehow. Still he changes a lot between games (His image from RE Original to Code Veronica, to Remake and UC to RE5... he's like Madonna!).
- Sacrifice of Survival Horror to make it Action Horror.
- Professional Difficulty. One hit, one kill sucks; however it brings back a little of the "survival" aspect to it.
- Just one "puzzle" in the whole game (laser thingy in chapter 4).
- Gears of War take cover dynamic.
Overall I truly enjoyed the game, considering it isn't made by the series creator, I think it's a good aproach, and let me thinking what's next for the RE universe? A reboot? Please god, no. There are so many things left behind.

- Mercenary mode (well worth buying the game, in fact if RE5 was only mercenaries mode I would still pay full price for it.)
- The game is challenging but not too hard to be overly frustrating, it seems to have the perfect balance.
- The boss fights are extremely fun and memorable.
Dislikes:
----The storyline is so radically different from the other games that it almost doesn't even seem like a Resident Evil game. It's like really bad fanfiction... from Wesker being like an evil neo... to the fact he was a genetically cultured clone... to the fact Jill is being controlled by Wesker... blah blah blah.... Its just completely ridiculous.
We've been wondering what Umbrella was planning for years and now that we find out its kind of disappointing, especially because they did it so poorly and over the top. Wesker turns out to be a cliche comic book villain in the end because they were too lazy to think up something creative.
Its so bad I wish I could forget it and still experience the mystery.
- ------The gameplay is pretty much every recent popular shooter game combined into one. There are elements of gears of war, lost planet, etc.... but there's absolutely no elements of RE. For a series that used to be groundbreaking its becoming completely cliche.
------- NOT SCARY! There is absolutely no elements of survival horror in this game. The fact capcom has the audacity to call this a survival horror game is completely shameful.
------ Needs more characters in mercenaries mode! Come on... why not include ada, hunk, leon, etc etc? Why WOULDN'T you add that?
------- Sunny Africa? Seriously how is that supposed to be scary. Where is all the darkness?
Overall
Much like Re4, I don't consider this a "true" resident evil game.
Although its an extremely enjoyable game... it's nothing like the games that originated the series.
I know that if Resident Evil 1 had come out starting like this, I would never had had any interest in it in the first place.Last edited by TheOvermind001; 03-21-2009, 02:49 AM.

after playing it and all its not its not really not that fun mecs mode is getting kinda old and theres too many guns i found stupid to have all these guns and power ups just sucks you got different guns doing the same thing over and over
it should have 2 sets of guns thats it, fighting wesker was very boring , well i cant blame shinji , i blame jun lost planted wasnt all that great same as for RE5. and another thing chris was too big for Re5 if u look at in old game he wasnt all that big , now i could built BUT not that built up
sheva A.i is GOD AWFUL and the game too short Re4 was better with upgrade item slot love it , this one not so great . ill still play it but ill give it (5 out of 10).
i hope capcom hire back shinji for Re6 i want Zombies back and i want the horror that made it and i dont want to be online co-op , and doesnt need to be like Gears of war(controls) and doesnt need to have Hollywood stuff in it.

Did anyone else notice the lickers didn't make the correct sounds?
Also, they didn't quite look right... something about them was off.
That was a major pet peeve when they didn't make the familiar creepy weezy breathing sounds and shrieks as in re2. It stopped me from enjoying the fact actual RE monsters were in a RE game...

Wesker was NOT a genetically cultured clone. Maybe you need to pay attention to the plot more closely.

There were 5 selectable characters in RE4 mercs, and fewer playable levels. In RE5 there are 4 selectable characters and more playable levels. Seems like a fair trade-off and not much of a difference to complain about.
Using HUNK too often lessens his appeal more and more. Are you saying Capcom should just throw him into every RE game they make?

RE5 is by no means a perfect game, and it doesn't even feel like RE1 or RE2 (the two best entries in the RE franchise). But if you look at RE3 and RECV, the series started leaning more toward an "action" vibe. And then RE4 raped the RE mechanic entirely.
That is why the developers are angling for a "reboot."Last edited by Jill's Boob; 03-21-2009, 01:02 PM.

RE5 at least tried to tie all the erratic plotlines together. Or maybe RE5 needed a guy dressed in a white robe singing acapella to leeches to feel more like an RE game? Also, Marcus wasn't singing... it was clearly a woman's voice!
Alfred... I admit is pretty darn corny. But if you get past the awful voice acting its kind of creepy... in a way >_>

So what is the "creative" alternative you have conjured up in your mind?
Probably the dumbest thing I have ever read. RE5 is the same game as RE4 with a "cover" system. That's it. I also don't understand how gameplay can be "cliche?" Again, your negatives should be directed at the brilliant Mikami since he actually took "recent popular shooter games combined into one" when he made RE4.
So, you thought RE4 was scary? What is your definition of "survival horror?"
Defining what a survival horror is a complicated task, but its kind of one of those "you know it when you see it" things. When I see Silent Hill 2, I see SH. When I see RE1, 2, 3... I see survival horror.
"Ada, HUNK, Leon, etc etc" were not in RE5 now were they? Besides, they all made an appearance in the previous game, so why do they need to be seen again? If you have a perfectly functioning RE4 disc, then you can play as them in Mercs. Why would Capcom need to make them specifically for RE5 Mercs?

So I guess every game is supposed to take place under the perpetual shroud of night, in a dark mansion or an old castle?
The mines level in RE5 was probably the freakiest level in any RE game ever due to the darkness and awesome lighting effect of the flashlight held by your partner.
I agree with you. REmake is the perfect RE experience.
Again, these are not the same lickers from RE2. Didn't you notice the greek symbol for "beta?" Just like with Wesker's backstory, you fail to grasp the information provided.

No you couldn't, so don't even try to flatter yourself. Doing arm curls with a video game controller isn't going to add muscle mass.
