Hence my questioning of why Jill is more popular than some of the other characters. I love Jill and all, but there is no substance to her character in RE5. Nostalgia can be the only reason she has so many votes.
I stated before but when you look at each of the other characters, they don't have much substance either. I love this game and Resident Evil but I know that if you really aren't a fan of Resident Evil...this games story will be boring to you.

^But this game has more characters than your typical RE game.

What did Jill do in this game? She displayed heroic courage to sacrifice herself to save Chris in a flashback, then spent the rest of the game being manipulated. She is then saved, and fades into the background, only appearing again to offer a clue about the PG-67A/W, and then at the end to throw down a ladder. That's it. No other real character-defining moments.

Josh was about as well used as Jill, yet he felt more like a character in the game. Yet he's got 1 vote. Jill felt like a cameo. And this argument of mine is in line with the original post, where I look at RE5 only, and not any other games.

Irving was just a throw-away villain, but his dialogue & his mannerisms display that he is this mentally unhinged, self-loathing, bullied pawn of the main baddies. I found him to be a pitiable villain who should have had more screen time.

And there was even more substance to Excella, though most have written her off as just a pair of tits. Yet here is this woman, born into luxury and (unfortunately) given the child prodigy syndrome. She is beautiful, smart, wealthy...yet her weakness is her fascination with Wesker. She is smitten with him, so much so that it blinds her to his true intentions. I think that, as a character flaw, is pretty cool. No matter how intelligent she is, she is easily dumbfounded by cupid. She thinks all is copacetic with her career being secured, and thinking that her future is also safe with her place at the side of Wesker.

I'm at least glad to see Wesker in the lead in this poll, as his character is the true driving force in RE5. I found his malice to be believable, and his plan to rule the world (through the eradication of the human race. and its propensity for self-harm) to be refreshing from the standard "take over the planet" plots.

Yeah, I couldn't see where else they would take Wesker after Code Veronica X, it seemed to hint that he was just about ready to take on the world with his ego and massive amount of viruses. I even felt a bit sorry for him once I read his file, how Umbrella screwed around with him. I could at least understand now, even more than ever before, why he was so pissed with them.

Well I am not basing what I liked solely on what we saw on screen in the game but also what we got from the files. I enjoyed what they did with Jill as it was something I wouldn't of expected. If it had just been she was just supposedly killed, controlled and then switched back with her not having anything else to do with anything...then I probably would of been disappointed. However I liked how they went back to the Nemesis infection and used that in the creation of Uroboros, I think a line in her file said it best about how she devoted her life to stopping bio weapons but ended up being integral to created the most dangerous one? While being manipulated and controlled is not a new plot device, the P30 was one I didn't expect. I think we all speculated it would be some kind of plagas but this worked better.

Way too many people are basing characters off of what you see them do in the game and not their backstory in files. Excella is a good example of this. You mentioned all the things she is, and that makes for a good character. However if you just look at what we saw her do in the game, she seems bland and dull with the motivation of only wanting to be by Weskers side. I found what she did before she met Wesker to suit her better as a character.

However its these file backstories that also make me dislike Sheva. I found the whole Parents killed by Umbrella, doing things not proud of while growing up and now devoting life to fight bio-weapons to really be too cliche. They could of done more, there was a whole "Sheva knew" speculation going around from the Kijuju website which was a missed oppurtunity in my opinion. Her only real defining moment was at the end of Chapter 2-3 were she sort of stood up to Chris. I thought Wow, maybe she won't be too bad. Unfortunatly after that she was reduced to Chris's sidekick in his mindless mission to find Jill.

Well, I still don't see the Tao of Jill. I suppose it is all personal taste, but I found a few other characters to be more interesting than Jill in RE5.

As for your opinion on Sheva, I agree with you. As much as she is a nice sidekick, she never elevates to more than that. I found her forced coincidence backstory (parents died at the hands of Umbrella!!!!!) to be ridiculous, along with all the other contrived sum of her parts. I still like her, but the way they really tried to shoehorn her into having some grand backstory felt, well, forced. Why couldn't she just be a standard BSAA operative with a generic past?

"omg shes a plot device now, it might be well written and interesting but I am going to still stand by that the boring token black forced partner is a way better developed character".
LOL. I'm done with this topic before I end up getting in trouble.

Chris Redfield seemed like a more believable character, and I grew attached to him throughout the game. He was probably the most well-acted/voiced and you just generally started caring about him and his struggle.

I don't see how Jill, after being in the game for a total of 10 or so minutes, could even be considered the best character. She wasn't the WORST, but come on. I like Jill but even I can sit down and admit that she had absolutely nothing going for her in this title.

People are choosing her because they are fans, they contributes to why they think that way, hell that contributes to why I feel that way too. Thats how opinions work, if you dislike a character going into a game, you are going to probably view anything they do as lame and sad. If you like them, well its the opposite.

If this discussion were going on fact, we would as stated above have to choose between Chris or Sheva with no one else even being considered. Besides picking the "best character" from a Resident Evil game isn't the strongest thing to go after since character development never was RE's strongest point.

I understand that, but on the same token, she really did feel like a cameo. I didn't get as much out of Jill as I was hoping we would. Jill is one of my favorite RE characters, but she wasn't really present in the story as much as she should've been. I realize the entire game led up to some sort of conclusion on whether she died or not, but when we found out, it wasn't fulfilling, and she wasn't fulfilling as a character either.

But I'm not going to judge. It's just like you said, if you're a fan, you probably will end up liking the character regardless of what happens (to an extent).

I voted for Chris. He was the only character to take down Wesker and glad that his story can come to a close. I didn't like Excella because I thought she was a waste of a character and found her more annoying than playing with Sheva in single player mode.

Unfortunately, he was in the game for even less than Jill and equally unimportant. Not quite the outcome we wanted from a character that we've all been hoping to figure out since 1996.

I'm convinced that the Big Man Majini was actually an ordinary human pumped on steroids.

I don't know man. I was really pleased with how the files built upon him being this extremely creepy guy who kept a "to kill list" for his fellow Umbrella colleagues and employees alike (in his personal diary too, no less). Seemed pretty much in line with what little we knew of him before in the previous games.

Nonetheless, I agree when it comes to how long he was in the cutscenes, it was very much a disappointment, plus the silliness of him wanting to become a god... (I think everybody was disappointed in that department). So thank fuck we got a good load of files to cover his story arc, which made up for that incompetence on Capcom's part.
