You could try it with swift shader too.
Just drop these files into the root RESIDENT EVIL folder.

I have RE1 installed on my laptop, but the first time I played it it had sound but I tried to switch the graphics on the options but then the sound stopped working and then it frozed at the Jill and Barry scene after he killed the zombie. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it and still it doesn't play sounds.

Let me guess you used the Matrox display setting?
that one reduces the volume in your Volume Control settings the only display setting you should use is the Total one if running in fullscreen.
The dining room glitch is unavoidable the only way to get around it is to exit out the dining room talk to wesker then talk to barry at the fireplace and go past the clock, the zombie will then enter the room chasing Jill near the clock instead.

I've been wondering if the 3dfx settings means glide 2x but when installing the game it doesn't put any glide2x.dll in the root folder, I had visons of using the dgVoodoo glide wrapper to fix the dining room issue.
