The problem with zero in my opinion is that due to the story of RE1 there was really no way to do a viable prequel that would fit.
The whole training facility in Raccoon Forest was a bit too convienient for my liking. In RE1 they did such a good job of explaining everything, such as why the mansion had been abandoned so long after the accident before STARS moved in etc. In zero, lets just spread the virus via leeches and suddenly everyone's a rapidly decaying zombie within minutes.

    The only way would have been Bravo Team running round the forest all night and then into the mansion {i remember Shinji Mikami saying in an interview prior to the games release that if he was director, he would have shown how each Bravo Team member died one by one.}
    "I've got 100 cows."
    "Well I've got 104 friends."

Personally, I didn't think RE0 was that bad. As a matter of fact, I really liked it.

For one thing, it's very very much the survival aspect of survival horror. I relied on my knife more times than I care to mention. Or maybe that's just me failing at life.

Also, like many others, I really liked the soundtrack. The dark, brooding theme of the training facility gave me the creeps big-time. And those violins really work their magic during Leech Zombie encounters (I think it's violin playing, anyway.)

The graphics are absolutely top-notch, and pretty damn good even by today's standards (much like REmake's). And truth be told, I didn't even realize I was in the Umbrella lab until I was in the trainyard. I was like "...I've been here bef-- OMG." XD Makes me really want a REmake-style RE2... D:

I'm not a big fan of Zero, completed it once and now reading the book, might try it again give it another chance.

I liked a lot about RE0, but often found myself becoming frustrated by the gameplay. That's probably why I've never gone back and replayed it.

I think Zero was one of the weakest classic Resident Evil games.

I don't really like the story; in RE1 everything was so simple: an accident in the lab, people (who worked there) trapped in the mansion due to the quarantine, slowly turning into zombies... everything was perfect. And then came Marcus - a long dead man who miraculously resurrected thanks to his Queen Leech - and his army of infected leeches controlled by his sing and Capcom wanted us to believe that he was behind everything that happened in the Arkley Mountains.

However, even when you ignore this, the story is very poor and forced. For the most part it doesn't even develop: Beccy and Billy are just wandering through places not knowing where to go next while Marcus is sitting there in the monitor room doing completely nothing. IMHO story-wise it was the least developed main RE game - even RE3 had more interaction between characters :/.

And I also think that UC, probably due to the laziness and low budged, did a good job omitting young Marcus and replacing him in the pre-boss cut-scene with leechy version of Marcus.

Zero is a great game, ain't played it in a while but the whole concept of no item boxes and player zapping was at the time a unique mechanic in a survival horror game, that and the enemies, but the story was ace it had me hooked and too this day still does, i wanna see billy return sometime in the series and of course rebecca its getting boring without them and barry xD

The reason they got rid of young Marcus in UC was because they got rid of the story. In Zero, the main plot is "who the hell is this nutjob?" He resembles Marcus...but Marcus is dead . Plus this guy is way too young.
If he was just looking old the whole time, there'd be no mystery or plot. We'd just know it was Marcus.
Hence why UC's version has no plot.

And Billy and Rabecca were just looking for a way out. It's a lot like RE1, actually. "Sure we could stay in this safe main hall...but let's wander around and solve some puzzles instead."

I enjoyed Zero for the most part. I liked the partner zapping system - it was an interesting edition. But I got tired of the mansion-like settings, it was a bit too much like other games in the series in that sense. I think the parts I did like were the train, the observatory and the church the best, and they were very small parts of the game. And I was annoyed at the lack of character interaction and that they pretty sidelined the rest of Bravo team offscreen (besides briefly seeing Enrico and Edward).

I really liked the game. The only problem that I found compared to the REmake was that
most of the time was really easy.

                      EX1: Easy mode RE0 - Dying in 7 bites
EX2: Easy mode REmake - Dying in 3 bites

It had it's hard parts where you try to get past the Dam bridge and a frog comes out, if
you don't rush to get to the other side solo after being separated from your partner =
you die being swallowed by a frog with it's extremely long tongue. XD

Before I forget Marcus younger form looked like it was going to a Final Fantasy convention. XD

Must've got lost what with being on that giant cliff or whatever at the start.

Marcus: I'll have my revenge on Umbrella. But first I gotta figure out how to get down. Hello? Anybody?

Okay, why RE0 sucks... Bad story, bad dialogue, bad characters, REALLY bad enemies (giant frogs, scorpions and centipedes... Really? They injected the T-virus into centipedes?) And it's not so much that, it's that all these frogs and centipedes don't seem to have violently mutated or changed much, they're just normal looking except enlarged.

Bends space and time. Did you know that there was a gigantic underground treatment plant under the gigantic RE2 lab that was way under Rakkoon city? And nevermind that, the Umbrella labs were supposed to be working normally at this time since it was way before Birkin went berserk, but they're crawling with mutants and has a renegade failed Tyrant running around. And also, Enrico Marini, starting in the Arklay woods, somehow beat a highspeed train on foot and made it into the miles down RE2 lab, and then made it all the way back to enter the RE1 mansion. And things that should've been awesome like listening to Birkin and Wesker have conversations for the first time were just inexcusably poorly written.

This game is just so goddamn sloppy and illogical even for a RE game. The logistics of Marcus rotting skeletal remains being revived by his mutant leeches, by entering through his mouth and... somehow rebuilding his cells, even though his brain was a rotten pile of mush at this point. Not only reviving him, but letting him morph into a younger version of himself at will, and morph into leeches, and then have the ability to telepathically control these leeches, or control them with opera singing, whatever. It's just too stupid to even attempt making it seem plausible.

As for gameplay, they added something to make it easier by letting you drop stuff anywhere, but since they're retarded, they also added something to make it even more frustrating than before by removing the item boxes, meaning the amount of unintentional backtracking you wind up doing because you left something vital 30 minutes worth of rooms back will start stacking up.

And then as the icing on the cake you have to play as that fucking 12 year old boy Rebecca Chambers, along with ultimate cliché not really guilty criminal Billy Cohen. I liked the sound the .45 made, though.

You mean... just like Neptune, Yawn and Black Widow from RE1/REmake?
But yeah, even though I thought it was a great idea to throw some random animals that were affected by the virus and mutated unintentionally, the choices Capcom made in Zero were... weird to say the least. A bat I can understand, frogs and monkeys - okey... but a giant scorpion and even larger centipedes?

And I agree about dropping items feature. At first I thought it was great, but later in the game I missed magic boxes so much. Especially since I didn't know that all the places are connected (you can even go back from the water plant to the train crash place -- yeah, talk about bending space and time), every time I was going into new location, I was running back and forth to bring all items with me... it was horrible .

QTF, Resident Evil did have some normal specimens used as B.O.W.'s, however Zero tried to do the same thing with a few creatures that well...aren't really that interesting as boss(no offense to bug fanatics). I also thought it was pretty lame that they hyped up the scorpion so much for Zero (even putting it's image on the packaging)...Spoiler:
I mean, it's pretty terrible when a GIANT FROG is one of the harder enemies of the game lol.

I never liked 0 and only played the game 2 times. Besides the story and character being weak, I was frustrated with the gameplay and didn't like that there were no item boxes. Things in the game didn't make sense, like the magic elevator but I don't want to get started.
