  • The future of Resident Evil (post 5)

Warning! Please respect each other’s opinion and act nice. Trolling will not be tolerated in this thread so be warned.

Coming almost to four months passing the release of the filth titled instalment of the series, and with Dark Side Chronicles coming out this winter, and a psp title being in the works. This thread is to speculate on what further Resident Evil titles could bring.

What we only know is that the series could expect to get a “reboot” in some manor, whether it will be game play or story, this is only one minor part of information we have heard coming from Takeuchi’s interest on the future of the series. However, Resident Evil 5’s success, already catering over 5 million units shipped, could a “reboot” be soon at this generation of consoles or the next?

We already know from Kawata that they had admit to certain wishes for changing certain designs for 5, and that with his attention on the sequel to Umbrella chronicles is aiming to go back to more of the horror roots, which is what Resident Evil is best known for as its precursors before it, when 5’s primary direction has been more into the action genre, especially from both press and fans that one disappointment for the game was not having the scare factor the series is known for.

So what can we expect from Capcom’s flag ship series? Discuss.

I would really really hate for the series to get a reboot. I could not be bothered with a reboot and would not buy it.

I don't want a new story with new characters and new gameplay, id rather just buy a whole new game altogether.

I hope that Kawata can have an influence of the rest of capcom and especially Takeuchi, and that it can go back to the horror style RE is known for.

i want the RE series to be over with. thats my opinion.

every good series ends some where and well RE5 is the end.

This is adapted from something I wrote earlier.

RE5 seems to me a very 'safe' game, in that in the end, it seemed to try nothing that hadn't been done before. I'd always thought of Resident Evil as a pioneering series, and in the early trailers and interviews made the game seem rather ambitious. But I think that RE5 totally fell flat in alot of ways. It tries to do alot of things, and I don't think it does any of them particularly well. Things that made RE4 unique like the yellow herbs and upgrades - things like stocks and scopes to improve performance weren't as good as the predecessor. The forced co-op, and the tacked on cover system. I haven't played GOW much, but after having played Uncharted, I don't think RE5 has any excuses. I think that critics were probably a bit soft on the game. I don't think a graphical update and co-op should cut it in this day and age.

I don't think that something similar could be released again. I doubt they'd get away with it. Not with a 4-5 year cycle between each game. I'm suprised they did with RE5, because RE5 felt stale enough in my opinion.

As for the story, continuity and consistency has never been the series' strong point, and I don't expect that to change. It could be anything. Hell, look at RE4 compared to RE 1,2,3. RE4 could probably be called a reboot. If separate ways and RE5 weren't made to reel it back into the 'main series'. I expect the next installment to be drastically different to RE5, but probably over the shoulder stlye, just much improved. The characters won't really matter. It's the gameplay that has to make an impact again. I don't think the series ever had any strong characters.

Yeah i agree with this. I think i would want the RE series to just die and me done with that to milk it until it's so fucked up you can't recognize it anymore.

I mean look what happened to the Spyro and Crash Bandicoot series.

But i doubt capcom will do that, so i would rather them keep with the current characters and story that a reboot. But most of all i just want it to die while it still has dignity.

Resident Evil is still one of the best series out there to date, and still worth playing as long it is kept in a level of competence, which will always be key coming from Capcom; I can just see new arcs running, like how I think Konami will do with Metal Gear. Comparing the series to Spyro and Crash’s is slightly stupid, considering that the series was kept by the publisher and not the developers, where Resident Evil is one of the highest Capcom’s IPs, I doubt it will die and doesn’t need too since it’s still fun to play and enjoy than other games.

The series will gain a lot by killing the current story and starting with another weak character who doesn't have super ninja skills, stumbles into a story where we have no clue what happened...and force us to survive.

Unless Resident Evil 6 is going back to the series' horror roots, I'm not going to be bothered with it. I still haven't bought or played RE5. I simply don't care about it. However, I will be buying The Darkside Chronicles.

What do I want for the RE series? I wouldn't mind a bunch of side games, like the ones we are getting right now.

When Capcom released Outbreak File #1 and 2, I fell in love with them. It was kind of a big fad for us Resident Evil fans, where that is all a lot of us would talk about, Outbreak.

Outbreak was fun, innovative, and there was just something about it that I loved.

I will definitely be buying The Darkside Chronicles, no questions. And I really want to see more of their new PSP game. I get the impression that Resident Evil Portable is going to be like an Outbreak title. If it is, than I don't care if I have to buy another PSP, I'm buying that game!

But if it turns out to follow the RE4/RE5 style, I won't go anywhere near it. I actually don't mind NOT buying RE5. Really. The graphics are really good, but it's not Resident Evil if it is an action game like that, I'm sorry. And I'm sticking to that policy. I won't buy it just because it has the name "Resident Evil."

If they are going to do a RE6, which we already know that it is going to be several years away, which is why I certainly wouldn't be wasting my breath on it right now. I would focus more on the RE side games, since I really think that is all we'll be getting until they do a RE6.

RE6 needs an all-new cast, and it needs to go back to the series horror roots.

Aside from the PSP title which I expect to be a spin-off, I'd like the next main title(RE6?) to revolve around Ada Wong. If not...I don't want anything else. No reboots, no remakes, nothing. Just let sleeping Cerberus' lie.

I really waiting to see what happens in DSC. I think they need to clear up any confusion with Ada and Sherry and either clear up the mystery or lead in some direction.

Yea I would have prefered Chris, Jill, Wesker, etc. to die in RE5 and bring some closure to the series, but of course that would mean less money for capcom. I know people are getting their hopes up for a Sherry tie-up in DSC, but chances are their making up some bullshit story as we speak with Ivan look alikes running around in straw hats. I got my hopes up for Sherry in RE5 and I learned my lesson. It seems like no matter how the fans want the storyline to go, it turns out the exact opposite. While I'd love for the series to just end, I know it simply won't happen. A reboot could be a positive thing since no matter what direction they decide to take the series, it would do less damage to the original story/characters that most of us grew up loving. If the story is rebooted, I think that they should create a subtitle, such as Resident Evil: Children of Atom, etc. It would be hard to keep up the numbered titles, like Resident Evil 23, I mean this isn't Final Fantasy lol. Also, it would give a respected seperation from the new games, and the classic games with the original story and heroes.

I wouldn't want a reboot. If Capcom gave us some closure on things via another game/cg movie/hell even an official novel that is actually good then I wouldn't mind if they started a new storyline with new characters as long as it's set in the same universe and timeline.

New BSAA characters that are taking the spotlight please?

Actually, a full game with Josh would be fantastic.
