While he's certainly the most ancillary you could get in relation to the story, I never thought of it in quite that way. It makes me think the merchant's a figment of Leon's imagination, which in turn makes me laugh.

I've always thought the merchant was indeed just a gameplay element. However, I now think that every event described in a cutscene is canon, and since the merchant is introduced by a cutscene, then he is a character per se. :p

Tofu and the Merchant are both very cool.
They are both in Resident Evil games and I don't see how their existence can be questioned. I've seen them with my own eyes!

Tofu actually appears in series 2 of the Biohazard 3 HK comics. He's like, running around, getting chunks bitten out of him and everything.

Speaking of Outbreak, Alyssa Ashcroft is a reporter for the Raccoon Press, you don't see her in the Mercenaries mode but I just know she was there. She is canon x 3.

Why does everyone think there is only one Merchant?! There are multiple Merchants; some of their eyes are normal and some glow red. I wish Capcom would have made more variety in Merchant clothing to really show this extremely important plot point.

Tofu is real! At the end of RE5, Tofu was actually in the bomber during the Chris vs. Wesker fight; he was asleep, hidden in the storage compartment. The plane crash into the volcano awoke him, and he formed himself in Wesker's image to battle Chris. The real Wesker, who fell out of the plane moments earlier, landed on the ground outside of the volcano. He was unharmed, and lived to battle another day. Unfortunately, Tofu's fate was pretty clear. No more minigames for him...

However, Sheva is not canon.
