  • Nah I wasn't indicating you were hoarding anything, it just seemed from your post that you "knew" where this video could have been found if it existed, such as (in the spirit of the recent posts here) "I heard there could be a tape included with a V-Jump publication which could have new Bio 1.5 footage". Bad example maybe, but hopefully you get what I meant.

Before it's cancellation, the 1.5 version of Biohazard 2 was originally scheduled to ship in March, 1997.
Dude. According to the properties of this file found in the BIOHAZARD 2 Trial Disc, which just so happens to be the title screen file for 1.5, the earliest the game was worked on was on ‎Monday, ‎July ‎01, ‎1996, ‏‎4:13:08 PM. That's like 30 days after work was started on the game.

EDIT: I ripped the file from the disc, along with the rest of the 1.5 material, just so you know.

        • I wouldn't take that as solid evidence as the date they began work honestly. It's a fact that 1.5 was shown on July 31 at V-Jump. That is for sure. The exact date they began work could be debatable. However, it was stated in an interview that work began almost immediately on BH2 (1.5) after BH1 was released. BH1 was released early March in Japan.

Give them a couple of months to witness the success of BH1 and still within a somewhat reasonable "immediate" definition, I'd guess May or maybe June at the latest is when they began planning and making 1.5.

Don't forget that work also included planning and such. Just because the title screen is the earliest created leftover 1.5 thing on the > Retail trial disc < doesn't mean they began work on July 1. They probably spent a few weeks planning the story, characters, working on models and animations, tweaking the engine a bit. So even if July 1 is really the date the first asset they created (which I doubt it is even), they probably had been working on things for a while. The earliest leftover 1.5 file from a non-1.5 beta disc isn't enough for me to make any conclusions.

I'm not saying July 1 is an impossible date, I just personally find it rather unlikely. Maybe someone who knows more about general development of PS games could say that the material showed in the V-Jump video could expected to reasonably be only 3~ weeks in development.

          • Well, they "could" have what they showed at Jump Festa '96 up and running within just a couple of weeks, as we can safely assume that the game probably recycled anything and everything from RE1 and what we initially see is likely to be a slight tweak of the RE1 engine with some new background renders and character skins/models.

But out from experience, I'd say they probably started preliminary work on 1.5 the day RE1 was wrapped and ready to ship (probably as a very small team, with the rest of the guys jumping in the moment the initial sales data for RE1 came in)

            • I'd pretty much say that they could have gotten the V-Jump build built within a few weeks. Usually, from my experience of talking to developers, they are given a short period of time to show a simple version of what they are going for. My Lecturer who still in some capacities works in industry told us of how his studio had to make a tech build of a Harry Potter game to win a contract, and they did it in a weekend (mostly butchering Croc).

The Build itself shows only 3 Model types, Leon "Chris", Fat Cop Zombie and the Jump Suit Zombie. The Gorilla model I made and textured only took me seven hours total to make from scratch, I know that tools have vastly improved since then, so a Professional 3d modeller, well a less novice modeller from RE1, probably could have knocked them out within a day or two each.

The only difficult thing would have been the CG Backgrounds but if you ever look closely at a RE PSX background you will notice that the room textures are pretty plain and simple, by which I mean if something is wood, a wood texture is just slapped on directly and lighting takes care of the rest. A lot of detail is lost in the 320x240 resolutions the BGs get rendered at so investing enormous amounts of time into texturing would have been wasted. But again the V-Jump video only shows Iron's office and the Lobby, with a few concept sketches.

Tech builds are used to win over their publishers or bosses and usually just show simpily what the game would be like.

From the RE2 Trial, a lot of the "RE2" content seems to have started showing up around May/June 1997, almost a year later.

Or even better, how about just a few posts back? Carn posted the video on the previous page, post #400 of the topic. Haha. Unless he was talking about the actual vhs tape, which wouldn't be too hard to find I guess if you wanted to.
