RE1 uses directx 5 and re2 uses directx 6. As far as I know you can only run them at 640x480, unless someone knows how to break it.

Because the redesigned audio stack in Vista/7 doesn't support hardware acceleration anyway.

Ah! That's why, I see now, so is that a good thing (meaning that older games will just run better as it's just built into DX now) OR more likely a BAD thing, (meaning that there is NO real way of messing with things like this any more and they will forever be broken with not even a chance to fix them)?

It's a good thing because if by disabling audio acceleration the game was supposed to run better or whatever, it's already done for you.

But it's a bad thing because none of the games that used the DirectSound API can play 5.1 sound anymore (unless you use a program like Creative's Alchemy). But it's all right, the RE games were stereo only.

The only major problem I had while playing RE 1-5 on Vista was the very fast framerate of RE1 which I fixed by capturing @ 30fps, which forced the game to not exceed this framerate.

I used that .ini on pcsx2 a fews years back it could force the windowed mode resolution to be higher, it should work with all directx9 programs.
As for RE you could possibly use a DirectX to OpenGL Wrapper and then somehow override the outputted opengl resolution or maybe with software rendering via SwiftShader which comes with

            SwiftShader_Demo_2005
            Galapago - July 2006 build
Ashampoo Burning Studio 7 - April 2007 build
Dream Day First Home - Feb 2008 build

called SwiftShader.ini & d3d9.dll you just place it in the root dictionary alongside your program.

Seems RE1 uses DirectDraw DDRAW.DLL so you need a program that can intercept it.

Right just a quick update about Resident Evil 5 UK Retail PC version, except for the DX9 loading times problem and a couple of slight hicups, it's played through a whole playthrough fine.

On my Windows setup it takes a LONG time to install, maybe as much as 15/20 minutes!

After install, the DX9 version loads really slow until you alter/delete the shader log file, but the DX10 version runs flat out right out of the box.

Controller wise, I had LOADS of problems with my Smartjoy+ Playstation 2 controller adapter and gave up on it and bought an XBox 360 controller for PC pad, and I can report that the support for that pad was faultless!

That's about it I think, on to Resident Evil 2 now I think!

Been trying to get RE1 working, but after the start game screen I get "failed to initialize the hardware graphic device (3)"

                  Anyway to overcome this?
                  I am running XP.
                  Changed compatibility to 98/ME

On the topic of emulation, it's legal so long as you actually have the disc. So if you were to use an emulator that plays .iso files, you could just put the PS1/2 disc into your computer and play off that. Although I'd recommend getting a game pad, as the keyboard is an absolute bitch.

But that's how I'm replaying Code: Veronica at the moment.

Depending on your country, it may be legal if and only if YOU make a copy of YOUR disk, without circumventing copyright protections which can be difficult (again, your country may vary). You also would need to dump YOUR PS1's bios if you are using an emulator that requires it, and that in itself is shady territory.

Actually that sounds like the kind of error message you get when you run the game with a graphics card option that your card does not support.

Exactly. With RE1, graphic-card/support is definitely outdated, and the most simple thing(s) will cause RE to not run. For example, changing the screen resolution can fix errors, changing to fullscreen, etc.

There may be hope, however. Since CAPCOM doesn't seem to care about these outdated ports and it seems unlikely that new executables will be developed, there is a small group of modders taking this matter "into their own hands".

I'm currently aware of a certain project to create an OpenGL wrapper for BH/RE PC games. Whether or not this is possible and will actually happen... only time will tell.
                          I'm a blackstar.
