Whilst I agree with you wholeheartedly; if there are various copies of these around, couldn't someone simply create a new account somewhere on the internet under a proxy with an unrelated name, and anonymously post an ISO image of it? That way, the collectors reputation isn't destroyed and the beta is out.

I watched that short doco on Earthbound beta ROMs - there's a few reasons I think it's a different scenario from RE 1.5

1) The ROM is watermarked. It'd be easy to remove, but if someone has flashed a ROM cart you could probably tell, which leads me on to
2) If you burned 1.5 onto a blank CD-R, it'd look near identical to the original media. If you had old media stock it would be impossible to tell which was a facsimilie. With a NES cart, the media is harder to get a hold of, especially since a EPROM board with matching serial number would need to be over-written with the scrubbed Earthbound ROM. This is the barrier which prevents the original ROMS losing their value, as to replicate it you'd have to destroy another prototype.
3) With one exception he seems to be able to trace the pedigree of each cart back quite far. With 1.5, we all saw what happened the last time someone said they had it/had access to it... Even Robert has copped alot of flak in this thread and it's not even 24 hours old. I don't think the community will ever get the kind of transparency required to verify who has originals, just because all the mentalists seem to ruin it for everyone.

Why not help the community explore the depths of the betas? Why be selfish? Sure you paid money, but if you obtain it and selfishly post pictures like haha look what I got, you sir are an ass. Seriously, don't show us anything, don't make us jealous, don't make us beg, you look like a total dick.

If you honestly don't want to release it, make VIDEOS. VIDEOS THAT SHOW US EVERY SINGLE THING.

Value doesn't go down and fans get happy, win/win.

He's being the opposite of selfish. He's showing people what they otherwise wouldn't have seen. He could have kept mum and you'd be none the wiser. He's not gloating about it. He's not making me jealous, and he's not making me beg, and I for one don't think he's acting like a total dick.

He might yet make videos. He also might see the reaction the images got, and not want to bother. And I could really understand why...

If you don't want those being "watch but not touch" then just don't enter those threads. It's really easy.

Like people have already said, there's a reason why one doesn't upload those betas somewhere on Internet after acquiring them and most people understand and accept that. All those beta collectors pays sometimes fuckton amount of money and time to hunt those games so be thankful that they at least give you some information, screenshots and/or videos instead of bitching about them not uplaoding full ISO files or recording videos of it. If it wasn't for Kendo all we would know about RE alpha versions would be those old scans and videos posted on SurvivHorror.

And I don't see where he, or PSX Collector, acted like selfish dicks.

And Robert, thanks for sharing those things. Looks interesting.
