  • Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D Racist?

I was bored at work the other day and thought of this.

Resident Evil 5 can be construed as being racist. I'm not saying it is racist, or it isn't (and I have my own opinion on the matter which I won't bring up, because it's irrelevant) - but I can understand why people may think that it may be.

Now of course in Resident Evil 5 the context of story helps explain the scenarios, which to an uneducated eye, would look like a white person shooting alot of black people.

The problem is that RE: The Mercenaries 3D doesn't have a story. And it's just literally arena style gameplay where you have to shoot as many enemies as you can. Looking at early footage of the game here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_yW4bLZiNs) it's pretty obvious that in the version being played they only have one or two enemy skins implemented. Granted HUNK is the player character in this footage, but I guess I'm wondering why this game hasn't raised the massive amounts of attention that RE5 first did - or do you think that will even happen when RE:TM3D gets it's first official trailer?

Probably because the "racist" claim got old and was pure horseshit to begin with.

Plus the Majini aren't the only enemy in The Mercenaries. You fight the Illuminados too. Maybe more Ganado from BH4.

Don't worry. It won't happen again.

And people better shut up about it too.... I don't want Nintendo reading about these fears of Mercenaries being racist. Because they'll force Capcom to replace the Majini, Illuminati and Ganados with some family-friendly crap.

        Just sayin'

I never said the Japanese is racist.
I said that a game made by a Japanese company can be construed as being racist.

It's racist to say that the Japanese are racist.

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt.

I remember when they even got the people involved on an interview with the Associated Press to try and disclaim against the comments. LOL

I agree with you Gene that it's indifferent in that it can appear racist if you look at it, but it doesn't help when people react like N'Gai did and claim it refutably to be so rather than being judgemental on the whole picture. I guess that is why without a story it looks like it has that potential, but one would hope those with the thoughts would research correctly to look at the background of the game concept and look at it's origins in RE4 and RE5 instead. In that case, if the viewpoint of RE5 back then hasn't changed (ie. you thought it was or wasn't racist) then this probably won't change with Mercs 3D I would think. Even RE4 got a few glances at the spanish depiction and location, but clearly nothing like the heavy handed racist claims in RE5, especially the comments first by a black women's rights blog, but further put beyond that once N'Gai jumped on the bandwagon of course.
