It's not like every game in a series has to be groundbreaking – you might as well just create a new IP then. All of the classic Resident Evil titles were a rehash of the same formula with some refinements here and there – and, ironically, no one has a problem with that. That is not to say that they should, though: If I am playing a series, I expect a considerable amount of gameplay elements that are typical for this particular series. It's just that people become apologetic when nostalgia is involved. Every new idea has to be the best one ever, while some of the shitty gameplay decisions that were made in older titles are happily put on a pedestal by fans.

But we were talking about Resident Evil. You didn't bring up Devil May Cry until the fourth sentence in that post. Wouldn't make sense otherwise.

    Spoiler:
It's not like the first design is a masterpiece or anything... I'd even go as far as calling it pretty generic as far as Japanese characters go. I think the second one just gets more hate because people somehow connect the design to the "emo" scene – though I honestly don't see how one could get that idea. The Dante in the trailer does not give off a melancholic or wimpy vibe (which are attributes I'd typically associate with emos). Or are we considering all black-haired Caucasians emo now?

Because even though RE5 sold well financially, it isn't as highly rated as RE4 when it comes to critics or fans of the series. A lot think that the unique factor (co-op) actually ruined it. Despite this, however, it still sold well given the popularity of the franchise and success of RE4, and it still got 90+ in most reviews.

We? I wasn't. My whole post was about the fact that sometimes, reboots don't pay off. With RE, it has, whether people want to admit it or not. With DmC, I do not believe it will and I fear for the franchise's future.

"Emo" isn't just about your behaviour, it's not a psychological disorder. It's a trend, of which the people dress in a very specific way. Tight jeans/undergarments on men. Dark/red make-up around the eyes. Jet black hair, with a side-fringe, and particularly with more than one colour. Before dismissing the idea that he could be related to a stereotypical emo is absurd, have you actually taken a chance to look at any pictures of emos or do any research on their subculture?

      An example:

      Spoiler:

Nooo. There's no set style at all there. They must have all a bad night's sleep and I must be assuming all white males are emos. Perhaps I should assume that all people who wear all black with black hair, black lipstick, black nails and a "Cradle of Filth" T-Shirt have all just been to a funeral and there is none of this "Goth" nonsense.

What does the new Dante have? Dark make-up around the eyes. A multi-tonal hairdo, predominantly black, with a side fringe. Tight leather bottoms. It's really not that hard to see the association to the emo culture. Didn't the guy from Ninja Theory even say once it was inspired by 80's Punk Rock?

So, because I don't take the time to post a thesis on the diversity of the looks of emos, I am not qualified to judge a character's design?
People literally had the pigeonhole opened from the moment the trailer was released, happy to put the new Dante in the emo corner. But seriously, make-up, multitonal hair, an overlong side-fringe, tight leather clothes? Where? There are probably hundreds of reasons to hate the design, but for being emo? Come-stretching-on. You gotta be kidding me.

I didn't say I hate the design BECAUSE he looks emo. It's one of the reasons I dislike the design. The main reason is because of what Rombie said above. Being a long-time fan of the series, wanting a continuation of that series and DMC4 leaving more storylines open than closing them, then suddenly.. WHOOMPH! New Dante.

I find it very odd that you are obviously completely dumbfounded as to why anyone could possibly make the comment that he looks emo, when you don't seem to know what the stereotypical "emo" look is. If you disagree, fair enough, but I find it odd that you say you "honestly don't see how anyone could get that idea". That would suggest you obviously have no idea about emo subculture and therefore are NOT qualified to say his character design is *not* emo. What do you mean where? Have you looked at the picture? I'm happy to debate about disagreeing on his design with you, but I unfortunately cannot look at the picture for you. You have to do that yourself. Click on it. If there are probably a "hundred reasons" to dislike the design, why is because in the fanbase's opinion he looks emo, an invalid one? Because you don't like it? Well, tough. Just because you don't like someone's opinion doesn't give you the right to call it "stretching". It is a perfectly valid point and to dismiss the fact that someone could associate "Dante" with an emo because he has 4/5 stereotypical of traits of one as "stretching" is absurd.

            Yes, that's it, I guess.

              • Let's face it. It's not a style people are hooked on. This is the reaction you'd get from seeing Peter wearing the symbiote in Spider-man 3.

There's taking a new direction with your character, and then there's that....

Rombie said it best though. I'm not much of a DMC fan, but I never thought the series needed a reboot. We were all under the assumption that this DMC5 project was actually going to be an exciting followup. Instead I saw more groans and moans than the first ten minutes of RE: Afterlife.

Resident Evil was a series that after RE5 Capcom was (and might still be) tempting to do a reboot. Pretty hard when you have a CGI sequel and a 3DS game taking place in the same canon. The thing is RE is their big money making franchise, and when you hear that Takeuchi is stepping down, no one is grabbing it yet, and it may take up to eight years to make... Well it sounds like they're not sure how that can make the next edition better. I'm sure they'll have one out regardless if it's a reboot or direct sequel, but as with every main game these days there has to be spin-offs released to buy time until they know what they're doing.

                • I don't see anything actually emo about the new Dante.

He looks more like he would fit in with these

                  • That is what they were going for, I believe. His top half attire seems more like that pic, but his face has very strong emo undertones. I almost expect him to have lip piercings and a devastating hairflip attack in the next trailer.

                      • I haven't necessarily lost interest in the series I'm looking forward to Revelations but what I did lose interest in is the path the series has gone. By all means I think RE5 and RE4 are fun games but when I go back to the REmake I feel like RE5 isn't part of the series as well as 4. I guess I'm still excited because now that I'm older and have money I can really start collecting the various items. If the series continues down the path of action then I will lose interest because 4 & 5 leave me with a sort of hollow feeling

                        • Kylie is right about the look they're going for in concept, the games development people say they want to envoke a 70's and 80's punk image. I guess the actual designers have blended a look that has a combination of that with a little modern relevance towards some people out there who will like the look.

When you look at the chief creative director Tameem Antoniades though, especially his frickin hair cut, it looks somewhat familar... haha

Ninja Theory explains the big changes to Dante and the Devil May Cry series in this video interview about the newest DMC game. So do you love or hate the new...

Definently check that out too, outside of the hair cut it explains what they're doing with Dante and the game. Alex Jones from Capcom calls it in exact words a reboot (of the franchise) and he and Tameem try to sound like it's a positive thing to take the quality of concept in fighting from the original titles but move it into a new world.

Their.... difficulty in doing this.... with a proper focus doesn't provide me with any confidence in the project (along with Ninja Theory's poor track record), but it's an interesting interview regardless no matter what you think about the new DmC.

                          • I dunno if Dante looks emo. He just doesn't look like a protagonist to me.

He looks like a generic NPC type designed by someone lacking any trace of inspiration.

However, at least they didn't go to the other extreme... like they did with Chris Redfield - who new design is described as a big ass fridge with a chia pet on top.

                            • It seems to me Ninja Theory is trying too hard to make Dante edgy. Now I've always thought Dante was more cool than edgy anyways. But the new looks is trying to hard. Now if the game is good, I won't care. but Ninja Theory is making it, and after Heavenly Sword it makes me hesitant to try it

                              • After Enslaved, I'm in love with NT. I hope this actually does sell well.

That way it can fuel Enslaved 2. <3 Not a huge DMC fan, but this does seem to be a very odd thing for them to be doing... But again, after Enslaved, I know they can make an amazing game. Whether or not this will be any good has yet to be seen. We shall see.
