  • Here's one pretty bad mistranslation though, which features a pretty clear-cut contradiction. http://thesnakesoup.org/?section=myths&content=coma

Liquid Snake: "But father was wounded in combat and already in a coma when they brought him in. So they created us from his cells... with a combination of 20th century analog cloning and the Super Baby Method."

There is plenty of speculation of this coma among fans especially when taking the alleged "missing link" between Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and Metal Gear into consideration. However, the two "links," Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker take place two years before and after the Les Enfant Terribles project, respectfully, and the circumstances surrounding the coma itself are not explored. Well, that's because there was no coma, at least according to the original Japanese script.

Liquid Snake: "だが親父は戦場 で負傷?すでに不能 者だった?だから俺 達は親父の体細胞を 使って造られた。前 世紀のアナログクロ ーン技術とスーパー ベイビー法によって。"

I sent this segment of the Japanese script to Marc Laidlaw from from Junker HQ, known for translating the Metal Gear Solid 2 Game Plan and Policenauts. Marc translated it as such:

Liquid Snake: "But an injury father sustained in combat left him sterile. So they created us from his cells... with a combination of 20th century analog cloning and the Super Baby Method."
Marc is also the one who translated the Umbrella Chronicles Prelude to the Fall manga on PU too, by the way.

    • Bumping because it's necessary.

GamePro: How difficult is it to bring innovation into a series thats existing for such a long time already?

Kawata: At one point i knew that we needed to make a decision and therefore go for the risks to have a new challenge. Operation Raccoon City is not a real sequel to the series, instead it’s a spin-off. Thus we could risk a bit more. Hopefully we will leave behind some kind of legacy in the Resident Evil universe.
GamePro: The main claim of the game is: “Kill Leon Kennedy!”. Incase this works out it would send the series continuity into adsurdity. How does ORC re-write these canon Resident Evil events?

Kawata: The storyline is based on Resident Evil 2 and 3. The well known story will be expanded with new background informations. The player will have the potential and mission to kill Leon Kennedy. In the end the happenings in ORC will however not affect the main plot of the franchise.

Question: Did you set the game in Raccoon City to strongly anchor it to the rest of the series?

Capcom Producer: For us, it’s about a new direction for RE. It’s kind of a spin-off. That’s why it doesn’t have a number. It’s not necessarily entirely in the canon, but it’s totally immersed in the mythology.
      So fuck Slant Six.

Well, I guess this ends any discussion about the status of the game's relation to the canon of the series.

          • No, probably not. Slant Six seem determined for it to be seen as part of the main story.

            • is actually a mistranslation
Everything is these days. :| And it still doesn't say it's canon, just that it takes place within the chronology (like 4D-Executer, Gaiden and the drama albums also do) and is "immersed into the mythology" (pretty much anything with "Resident Evil" or "Biohazard" in the title). So far we've got that and "it's not contradicting anything!" when it contradicts everything.

Sources (IGN, Gamespot, etc) actually say Mike Jones is with Slant Six. He's assistant producer. Maybe they got it wrong?

Still looks like it's going to be an "only partially canonical" deal (similar to Wesker's Report) or a glorified Chronicles scenario, since no matter how hard one tries, it doesn't fit and contradicts pretty much everything it touches from the smallest of details to the largest with an embarrassing lack of research.

Right now we don't know what the case is considering they are contradictory and just plain wrong on several points. Naturally that gives cause for concern when they claim to be doing the opposite. Aren't you the one who accuses them of outright lying about RE4 PS2? • Well that Relyonhorror interview confirms it for me. Fuck all to do with the main series and just a what if. I can concentrate on at least trying to enjoy the game now as opposed to understand it.

                  • To be honest, I assumed this wasn't canon from the beginning...Well, more or less when the option to "Kill Leon" came about. My guess is the game is just one of those "What if" kind of deals.

That and I think they wanted to go back into Raccoon City because Resident Evil 2 seems to be what most fans go for (myself not included...CODE: Veronica all the way). I don't really mind these games that aren't completely canon; it makes for an interesting turn of events. What would happen if so-and-so died? What would happen if they released two Nemmies instead of one?

It is fun to go out of the box a bit.

It would be "Confidential Report" material.

                      • The only time I can find Mike Jones mentioned as a producer, it's as an assistant producer for Slant Six or a producer on Capcom's Upcoming Resident Evil ORC title. I can't seem to find any reference of him working directly for Capcom.

I think it would be a dumb idea to make ORC replace RE2 and RE3 in canon. And at this point, I don't think there's much argument it would have to replace them, given the differences. But if Capcom ever confirm that they intend for it to be so, who am I to argue? Just because my favourite game is suddenly non-Canon to replaced by a run and gun frag fest...

This can be taken in many ways, adding Sergei into the pre-established events during RE0/REmake/Raccoon City didn't affect the main plot either, still canon.

Question: Did you set the game in Raccoon City to strongly anchor it to the rest of the series?

Same again, especially with the underlined. Other coments have stated already it depends on choices you make. Plus you cannot leave a legacy if it never happened which non canon would mean.

Hopefully we will leave behind some kind of legacy in the Resident Evil universe.

Uhh, yes, Sergei impacted the main plot greatly. Sorry. The only thing is that he didn't contradict anything, but he did add a lot. ORC is contradicting, so it affects the main plot if it's supposedly canon.

Plus you cannot leave a legacy if it never happened which non canon would mean.
Um. The comics left a legacy. The drama albums left a legacy. Gaiden left a legacy. Confidential Report left a legacy. The movies left a legacy. Everything with "Resident Evil" or "Biohazard" in the name automatically leaves a "legacy". That remark to begin with is a very strange one to base your argument on.
