OK...so the Dead Factory is utterly unrecognisable. That's...not at all worrying.
Having watched scenes of Birkin's lab and the hospital, the whole, 'The Raccoon Streets weren't suitable because they were too thin and narrow' argument is a lot less realistic - there's whole sections of corridors and rooms smaller than those street sections, with larger set piece rooms for actual big battles. Adding in an open park or a three floored night club with balconies just past some of those barricades would have been viable. At least, my mind. It really has gotten rid of the idea that they can't possible have had those sections in a similar layout to the older games for me.
It is kinda depressing seeing Birkin's lab as the mess it is. The Hospital, I seem to recall, we never saw all of...although frankly it feels a lot like the one from Left 4 Dead.

The Dead Factory is not in the campaign. You just see it in the distance and one of the character comments on it. Although it is now a big sprawling power plant and not the inconspicuous, deserted factory that it is supposed to be.
We actually visit a brand new facility in the same level called the P-15B facility which is a warehouse which has a stupidly large lab in the bottom.
Rumour has it the Dead Factory is part of the Spec Ops game.
Also, anyone got any more easter eggs to share? I saw the portraits of Arthur Ashford in City Hall but must have missed the Alfred one. Oh yes, certainly. Bar the time travelling cars it does look more real. And those more realistic street sections could still be there. I'm not suggesting that they should have removed those. I'm simply saying they could have, also, added in areas with a similar layout and appearance to RE2/RE3 and the whole game wouldn't have spontaneously burst into flame. They wouldn't even have to be major areas - literally somewhere you spend two, three minutes walking through with lighter enemy resistance and maybe a side trip to the RPD. A, 'Hey old fans, we haven't totally fucked this up' moment. As I understand it that's more or less limited to two rooms in the Clock Tower.
I'm, frankly, starting to get confused over why they, frankly, decided to make it Operation Raccoon City, frankly. They've not used the buildings or layouts. They've barely used the story, and it certainly wouldn't be hard to change to one of the other outbreaks the occurred. You could even have Leon there to shoot if you want! It's not as though RE games have never had branching storylines before.
Instead, the design philosophy seems to be, 'Let's set it in Raccoon City, right, but make sure it in no way, shape or form resembles the place or closely relates to the events that happened there.'

honestly i think the best streets of raccon city we ever had was back in resident evil 3 i love that game soooo much ! here in ORC i feel like i dont know the areas it dosent seem like raccon city at all.. its just some random streets i never saw... the only real real real place that felt raccon city was the RPD and that even sucked because it only had like 2 rooms..

I think they switched up a lot of the areas we are familiar with based on the control/camera style. The game was never meant to be survival horror/action horror. I don't see how people would've made it through the crow hallway in the RPD, four players at once, unless they moved in intervals of two or something. A lot of the areas just seemed to be designed for shooting and giving enough room for four players to move about.
As for the city itself -- it probably would've been better if they decided to keep the scenario in a different town or city, moved the timeline somewhere between 2000-2003, and took their time to actually get some information right for a change. It's why the Capcom direction was different. Resident Evil 3 just showed you how much influence Spencer had (remake Spencer emblem key, "who's family history dates back as far as Raccoon City"), the fact the entire city was designed in such a way you needed keys and other devices to progress further into the game. You saw all of this in RE3 and how it was required to move further into the city, e.g. the jewels to access city hall, the circle plate to access the water system in the park, etc. Everything was built around traps and puzzles --> Spencer's fascination with cloak and dagger and his as well as Umbrella corp influence on developing the city as they saw fit.
It was just very well thought out if you took the time to sit and think about it. This game however being built around COD style and going for the action could not possibly keep those settings in place. Everything was based on puzzles and strategy and this is based around aiming and shooting.
Yeah it annoyed me to see they changed up Birkins lab, the hospital was way different, city hall wasn't even the same building (I believe you see a small glimpse of it after RE3 jewel puzzle), the RPD was.... laughable but understandable switched. I didn't like it at all but I understood why they did what they felt they needed to do.
It just would have worked better if they didn't keep it as Raccoon City but of course they wanted people to buy it and sold it based on the nostalgia without keeping the actual nostalgia. I expectations never were high with the game so I really wasn't disappointed. And as everyone really knows this game is not considered canon anyways. When you're inspired by the RE movies... ::shivers::
