I think the problem is that people were expecting RE0 to be what RE5 was, something that would explain the source of everything and mention where Progenitor came from. One of the taglines for the game was "Discover the root of all evil!", and seemed to heavily imply that we would finally see mysteries uncovered about Umbrella and Progenitor. However, RE0 did explain the source and did not explain the source at the same time.

It told us about the origins of the T-virus itself, who created it and how it was created. That was the goal of the game, to tell us about how the T-virus came into existence. It also provided some insight into how exactly the virus escaped at Arklay, or rather, what this "lab accident" was. In the Keeper's Diary we're told simply that there's been an "accident", which was pretty vague. At least with RE0 we know that it was Marcus who somehow caused this accident.

Also gave us some information about Umbrella, and what kind of man Spencer was.
    See you in hell.

RE0 was a good game. I have no problem with backtracking in games its only natural if i found a key next to a door it unlocks it would be kind of pointless to lock it. REally liked the gameplay those monkey/ape things were crazy hard to kill, they took a lot of bullets. I enjoyed it the first time I played but never really played through more then once, did play a decent amount of leech hunter though.

Strangely I LOVED Zero and played it over and over for a solid year I'd say I went back to it over the years too most notably when Archives was announced but the last time I tried to replay it I got as far as rewak . . . I guess I . . . hmm I'm gonna play Zero now . . .
