What else can they really do at this point, story-wise?
The only villain left is probably Alex Wesker or whatever the last Wesker Child was or some random unknown character from Tricell or even WilPharma.
Honestly, Capcom should try to fill in more of the gaps of Umbrella's demise if they are looking for story elements, instead of throwing ideas at a hat, and whatever lands inside is added to the story.
Capcom doesn't have anywhere else to go but the future. I hope. They usually manage to prove I'm wrong somehow...but hopefully the extra time they've gotten doing prequels and non-cannon games, with hopefully a build up in Revelations, will mean they're going to be on track for RE6.
...hopefully, anyway. Knowing Capcom there best idea so far is, 'Hey, isn't that Alice chick from the movies really popular?'
I'd personally love to see them do something with Haiti. Go back to the source of zombie lore and mythology. It would also give them a chance to implement some of the early ideas of RE5 involving heat, shifting between light and darkness, etc, that sounded so promising.
Now, I'm not saying they should introduce voodoo into the series. I mean, they could refer to it as voodoo, but instead of being magic, it would be biological in nature, whether it be a compound derived from local flora, or perhaps some kind of parasitic organism or bacteria that can't be seen by the naked eye.
Kind of like what they did in the first Uncharted. The "zombies" were created by what was referred to as a curse, but when you actually see it towards the end of the game, one could argue that it was actually some kind of organism, whether a parasite or possibly insect, that turned the people into those monsters. It's never suggested that it isn't a curse, but I think you could interpet it as something else.
Of course, with all the commotion over RE5's supposed racist imagery, I highly doubt Capcom would even consider touching a place like Haiti.

That sounds pretty cool, I must say, and within keeping of the setting certainly. Even if it's just a Bokor using traditional methods and spicing things up with a little t-virus, believing he can control the result. Unfortunately you're right, I can't imagine Capcom going beyond a token black character enemy any more after the huge fuss.
Personally, I'd like to go back to a city in RE6. Cities are the creepiest setting for me...these are the seats of humanities power, the greatest gatherings of our technological might. But they're also very familiar to us. Which makes it doubly disturbing when such a setting is over run, seeing a place that should be secure and safe against all but the exceptionally dumb people within society now a war zone, the familiar to everyone a blood stained ruin.
Well, creeps me out at least. Of course, I also want a scary game with exploration and puzzles. Given how likely Capcom are to listen to me, I expect the next RE game to be set in the rain forest on a perfectly straight, linear path where the goal is to see how long you can hold down the fire button as you charge through the weak, pitiful cannon fodder.
It's quite simple for me, really. If Resident Evil 6 is another action game like Resident Evil 5, I'm not purchasing it. Resident Evil 5 is the first main RE game that I never bought. Resident Evil 4 was okay but it was rather tedious, fighting nothing but ganados over and over again. But while everyone was so eager to see more during RE5's development, I wasn't. The more they showed, the more disgusted I was. Big muscle Chris, two-player co-op which reduced the fear aspect even more. And nothing but a focus on shooting, punching, kicking, and blowing up things. And a "bird-lady" character? And all of this soap-opera nonsense with Excella, Irvine, Wesker, and Jill? I said to myself, "what the fuck are they doing to this series?"
I absolutely refuse to play RE5, ever. Never played the demo, and have zero intention of ever buying it, even if it was free. I resent them making the game the way they did. It's funny though, because I don't believe Mikami was just saying that, when he said that he wouldn't play the game. I believe him, because I didn't either.
I hope RE6 looks like 3.5, with a dark creepy atmopshere, a fight for survival, blood, and a brand new cast of characters.
Much like they said during 1.5's development, you can't really bring back old characters and expect them to experience the same fear they did the first time (which in a sense is an odd choice that Chris and Jill are in Revelations, which is a pure horror game).
