  • Capcom's lame excuse for not having Leon in Mercenaries 3D

    http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/20...-evil-mercs-3d

As I said on GFAQS I'm not a Leon fan, but this is a disappointment. First you have their excuse for not using him. As far as Operation: Raccoon City is concerned Leon is used for a spin off in which he is killed. To say RE fans can't play Leon in the new mercs yet you can kill him in this game is adding insult to injury and rubbing salt on the wounds for those that like Leon.

And it's a rubbish excuse anyway since Chris, Jill and HUNK have Revelations coming out. This isn't a "kill Leon" section of the game. They are starring in it. And does this excuse imply that Leon is the only returning character you see in Raccoon City? No Claire or Jill?

Also this isn't just Leon, but cutting out the other characters from mercs like Ada and Sheva which is pretty stupid for a full on mercs title. Now I definitely will not be getting this game. No point in wasting money on an incomplete lackluster title that doesn't live up to its true potential.

I would have been angry if they were holding off for intentional DLC, like in the past, but if they really have no plans for that even then that more than cinches it.

Besides, knowing Capcom, there will likely be DLC despite what they say or at least a "super" version in the works with additional characters and content. It happens far too often with them.

If gamers are still going to buy an incomplete game with full knowledge that they're holding out then more power to you. But no complaints if they come out with a better version afterwards with more content as they have in the past. It's your money to waste.

Moral of the story is, Capcom doesn't like you. I feel your pain though, Capcom have a habit of doing the complete opposite of what their fans expect, almost seems on purpose. My aproach to Capcom these days is just take what you get and don't get hyped up for anything, because you're only setting your self up for a likely dissapointment.

On a side note though, I wish people would stop reffering to game updates or revisions as a "super version," only SFIV players could say something like that. I hate SFIV.

It's been like that even before Street Fighter IV I'm afraid. And I'm out of nifty titles to call their re-releases with bonus features. So "super version" gets the point across m'kay.

And Vito, even if you don't care about Leon (or Sheva, Ada, Excella, etc.) there's nothing wrong with supporting more variety for fans to play their favorite characters.

People never really started saying it untill SSFIV, regardless of how many prefixes or suffixes Capcom added to game titles (Super, Hyper, Upper, EX, etc) in the past. People were never saying "boy I can't wait till Super CvS2, or Super 3S, or Super MvC2" back in 2004. "Super MvC3," "Super SFxT," "Super Mercenaries;" just because Capcom releases a game doesn't mean they're going to slap "Super" on the front of it, like Super SFIV. I get your point and this wasn't a personal jab at you, sorry if it came across that way, it's just irritating when I see people reffering to Capcom titles in this way on an almost daily basis.

Let's not stray too far away from the subject on something so trivial as gamers calling an updated/extra content game "super". It's pointless.

I want to know if Steve is going to be in it, that would be insult to injury. they should have leon though.

Well obviously the only characters that matter are Chris, Jill and Wesker. None of the other characters had impact on the series or were relevant enough to put in Mercs. Now that you mention it Smiley I think I may cancel my pre-order on the game. To have a straight up Mercs title and not include all possible characters from the start is just ridiculous. Even if they aren't playable until you unlock them it's severely stupid not to use all available options.

I imagine your right about the DLC portion though, they will release all previously unavailable characters in separate downloads and charge five or ten dollars a piece for them and people will gobble them up. Blah now I'm going to have to post in the I'm Angry thread...!!!!

                  Of course...

I think it was pretty obvious, at least to me, that something was going to slip through the net with this game. It probably will with Revelations, and it probably will with most of Capcom's future titles as well. I don't know why but they seem to have no problems with doing what you don't want them to do, like missing out key characters from full titles, or with other random and seemingly negligent design choices in their games.

With Mercenaries I think the minumum people expect is every playable character that there's been in at least, the main RE series. To miss out key characters in big titles like this and with such a lame concept as this one is almost a dickish move. While not the first RE character, Leon is by far the most famous, he's arguably RE's MOST famous character. In this day and age, their vision isn't our vision, they want to do stupid stuff that annoys their fans. It's a dickish move, it doesn't make sense, but this is today's Capcom were talking about and I kind of expect it.

All I can really say is that Leon's trip back in time to Raccoon City better be worth it...

Edit: They're playing on it though, they're playing on the whole "we're going to kill Leon" and "Leon's not in Mercenaries" thing, they know what they're doing. I don't get it to be perfectly honest, does it generate hype? Does it sell the games? I can't really say it does.

That is a weak excuse, even by Capcom's standards. I imagine we either have them going for a Director's Cut version with added content, as folks have mentioned, or we're gonna have them bring out DLC after having 'listened' to the fans. Even though it may well turn out it was already on the...cartridge? Disc? What does the 3DS eat?

I may not be a huge Leon fan, but it's just nuts to use such a crappy excuse. If people don't wanna play as him, he'll simply not be played. People do still have some semblance of free will, as much as Capcom might wish otherwise. The only way his ORC appearence can even compare is if, five minutes into the game, he kills the four Umbrella grunts and clones himself, so Squad Leon swarms through Raccoon City, Scrubbig the Virus in a hail of gunfire.

Maybe Kwata is jealous of Leon's deliciously styled hair and way with the ladies?

I think Capcom might be testing re-releasing a game on a handheld. From memory they haven't updated a handheld game.

Might be DLC. I'm personally not sure if the 3DS has the kind of infrastructure to allow it (does it?). If this is the case, it might be worth keeping an eye on SSFIV 3DS - to see if it's getting more costumes or even fighters.

Either way, Kawata can't just come out and say it. "We're withholding things from you to charge you for them in the future".

And it makes very little sense. You have RE4 merc levels and enemies. You have Krauser and HUNK. How can you have Krauser but not Leon or Ada? WTF?

Thats because being honest would set a bad precedent.

They'll most likely have a DLC pack with Leon, Ada, Sheva, and Excella 2 months or so after the game is released.

Looks like I'm sticking to my console versions of RE4 and RE5 for Mercs. I'd rather not shell out money for a downgraded copy and pasted game with the exception of Claire. I still stand by the fact that they should of just kept releasing dlc for RE5 mercs instead.

If Barry is truly the last character, and they're not even going to bother adding Leon, that's pure laziness. Not to mention it doesn't even make sense due to the RE4 stages as well has having Krauser a playable character. Personally I don't even care that Leon himself isn't it, but more of the fact that a game that's entirely based around mercenaries, there's only going to be 8 playable characters. I guess I just somehow expected that Capcom would maybe, just MAYBE add something more than just one new character to the game (Claire), leave out some others, and ship it out. Silly me.
