  • Biohazard 1: Behind the stairs

First time poster, long time reader

The place behind the stairs in the main hall of RE1 always intrigued me. It doesn't have any purpose other than checking there with Jill to look for Wesker at the beginning of the game.

Is there any info (interview, beta screenshots) that point to something being there or intended to be there originally? Or it's just an empty place that serve no real purpose?

There's a door in REmake, and we know that REmake added some stuff that was originally intended but never used, like the cemetery.

I thinks it's unlikely to find something, since we have some old protos, and they show nothing there at all, but who knows?

Sorry if this was already discussed, I couldn't find the topic.

Also, it's not a plug or anything, but I've made a screen comparison for the betas of RE1 with the final (original) version (here) (Click on Survol du Prototype). It's in french, but the images comparison may be of some interest, I don't know. Just put the mouse over the images and you should see the comparison with the final version. I don't think I've found anything you guys here haven't found though.

I don't think it was intended for the cemetery like REmake, I truly believe that area was found by taking the right turn in the proto shed (or was perhaps scrapped even earlier than that).

I would say the stairs are simply a "why not?" RE was one of the first free-roaming 3D games along with Tomb Raider etc. I guess it could of housed an item or two at one point but overall it did serve its purpose when the player looks for Jill/Chris.. I wonder if any n00bs got stuck on that point?

IIRC, the cemetery was accessible from the door atop the first set of stairs, not the one behind/under? I may be wrong, since it's been a while since I played REmake. Doesn't the one under the stairs lead to a lab in REmake?

For the cemetery being acessible from the shed, it's possible, but is there a particular reason that make you think so? I agree it would make sense, since the shed leads outside and the betas/demos stops right there, so we can guess...

I remember seing a beta map that was different from the original... I wonder if that map make you think that.

^Yes, the door to the cemetery is at the center area of the stairs (where it branches off into the two separate stairways). Meanwhile the one behind the stairs leads to Jessica Trevor's tomb and beyond that, an elevator leading to the main lab entrance.

Yeah good point, there is a tomb and graveyard in REmake. As for why I think its near the shed, well, it's just a guess.. What else could that exit be for?

Good topic, I was always curious about that place myself. Even long before the remake was released, I always thought there was some kind of secret entrance or something along those lines back there but alas, just dust and an idea for the remake's staircase lol.

In the replica Spencer Mansion in RE5's DLC featuring Chris and Jill, Lost in Nightmares, if you explore the area behind the stairs, you get a lever and there's also a place to use the square crank on to get to the prison/catacomb looking area.

In CV's Spender mansion, IIRC, you find Claire there poisoned after the Nosferatu battle.

I asked this years ago I said I seem to remember playing a version with a zombie behind the stairs.
