Romero script was a masterpiece compared to what we actually got. You have to bare in mind it was a first draft. All it needed was a few adjustments here and there and it could have been a pretty good movie. It's shocking to think a man who knows hardly nothing about RE (Romero) wrote a better script than a guy who is a proclaimed 'fan' (Anderson) even though he has never played the games that is.

The good thing about Romero's script is that it includes the mansion. That's all I can say..

As much as I usually enjoy Romero's stuff (Diary of the Dead non-withstanding) I just don't like this script. I haven't read it for a while, but the characterisation of Barry (big trusting black guy who follows everyone else's orders and calls them Boss?) and, for that matter, a lot of the other characters just doesn't sit well with me. Combine that with the story that is just...too full. There's too much there to be shown in less than a two and half hour movie without it feeling badly rushed. There are good plot elements, but it needs cutting down a fair whack. Chris' whole subplot seems a bit pointless.

There are pluses to it though. Hunters, Netpunes and Tyrants. Even Yawn and Plant 42. Yum. I especially like the portrayal of the Hunters. The fact that the team gets wasted mostly by the monsters rather than traps. It certainly feels a lot closer to the original game.

I do prefer this script in a lot of ways, but there is one element I prefer from Anderson's movies. And that's something a lot of you guys don't like - it's not a direct copy of the games. The first movie in the series at least could have sat alongside the games in terms of plot, which would have worked well for me. I, personally, prefer it when movies are an expansion to a story rather than a retelling.

        And then we go Apocalypse...

I liked the inclusion of Tyrant. But Yawn and Plant 42? No-way would that work on film... I find big monsters just.. not scary.. like Dino Crisis..

Would have been better if I didn't misspell originated though. :p

One of the old RPD podcasts goes over the history of Romero's involvement in the movies (it's ultra long as Dot goes through the whole script afterward as I recall).

The worst thing about his whole involvement is that he knew the origins of the series were rooted in his films and was really keen about making a new zombie movie with them, which is where the commercials began it, but the people at Constantine Films started sending him information that didn't sound like they liked his direction.

In the end Capcom said he was "fired" (and this was only in an interview in a gaming magazine) but according to Romero, Constantine just stopped talking to him and so he just figured they'd stopped making the film. Had it been a US production company rather than a German one, I expect it probably would have ended up in the courts like when Romero was involved with The Mummy.

what podcast did he read it in?

I loved the first movie as well since, like you said it could fit in with the games. It had so much potential, and then it got WAY out of control. I would have loved to have seen some Hunters in the movies, period. I feel like hunters aren't included as much as they should be, lickers seem to be more dominant these says but I'm really happy they put them in Operation Raccoon City. Neptune was my favorite "Boss" in RE1 (even though you don't really have to fight it lol) because it combined my two favorite things, sharks and the undead lol. If done right, Neptune could have been really cool in the movies. I picture the lab area from Deep Blue Sea

I also agree the first RE film could live within the universe. It was it's own story, and once they decided to bring in characters from the games I started to get pissed off.

Also, I think Romero, wrote multiple drafts for Resident Evil, toying around with different concepts.

Number 6. A summary of Anderson's draft for the original is also in there which has some interesting differences over the finished film. Just scroll down the following link to find them all.

deep blue sea is an awesome movie, that scene with the shark in the lab does kinda have a neptune fell, especially the RE remake neptune in the labs when you drain the water.

are there any other movies that have a RE feel or look, or just scenes that remind you of something from the RE games?

I could see that, especially the smaller ones from Outbreak.

My favorite part is "cybernetic battle-royale that lasted 4.5 seconds!".

Oh what a classic reading of that scene...if you can even call it a scene.
