I would really love a good mixture of the two. I believe you can have a good action horror game with elements of survival in it. I honestly had no problem with Resident Evil 4 or 5. Video game franchises grow. They're not always going to be the same. It has to adapt to the larger market of the day if it wants to make any amount of money. And it seems that these days, gamers want action.

Personally i found Dead Space irritating, not scary, it's basically a haunted house simulator set in space. No tension, no psychological mind fucking, just things popping out and screaming in your face (as is the norm for "horror" games these days it seems, sadly)

No, the sounds of the shuffling of the zombies or clicking of the hunters claws that were round the corner built tension and fear, you were scared to go round the corner and face them, that's horror. Now you rarely even know the enemy is coming until it jumps out at you, there's no buildup so there's no fear, just a fright.

No tension.... Dead Space is all about tension, I dont remember a single point in either game where I didnt feel tense. True is does implement jump scares but there is also the psychological side to it as well.
Also I'd agree with alexdz on this, the old RE games were pretty much the same thing, lots of jump scares in there, although it is also true they were good at building up tension. In all honesty I find dead space scary as hell but like Darkmoon says its subjective, some people found paranormal activity scary where as i didnt its just how it goes I guess.

Hope it sells well...especially given how well Mercs is doing for the 3DS. If it blows Mercs out of the water then hopefully Capcom will get an idea.
Hmmm...if you pretend (or pretended) to be scared, then you may be playing the wrong genre. I like being scared. I like feeling trepidation about what's around the next corner, what's through the next door. I'm not 10. I also don't pretend to be scared. I know some folks simply don't get scared, regardless, for whatever reason. To some people it's always just a game. Maybe horror games aren't for you?

The first Resident Evil is the best one (not Remake). I feel like the best we'll ever get to another one of this kind of game is a really good fan PC mod, because Capcom sure as hell isn't going to do it.
These latest videos of Revelations were a bit disappointing.Last edited by RetroRain; 06-12-2011, 02:01 AM.

RE2 is pretty much all closet monster scares. I don't think that's a bad thing at all, but other people do.
Heck even RE1 actually had a closet monster!
Dead Space and Dead Space 2 have some great tense moments. A personal favourite is when you have to fight the Stalkers in the vacuum. Going through the Ishimura in #2 is another. And in Dead Space games you can hear things moving / metal banging etc. when there's nothing there. Not so much to scare you at once, but just to build tension for when something does come. I found it to be very effective.sigpic
