  • I've exhausted my time as a gamer. Unless it's a new game I have no real urge to seek out the unlockables all over again for the fourth time. It's a shame you can't save your game using an uploaded file from another gamer. I don't care for having the trophies so I would have taken that up. As it stands I might have to go through these accordingly once more at a later date.

So let's see. A rank. I believe that's no first aid sprays, no saving on typewriters, no continues and all under about four and a half hours is that right? Well it's a little more technical in my strategy guide, but essentially the same.

Oh these were the days where the A ranks were something of a challenge.

    I've been spoiled.

    • so basically what ign is saying RE5 was better than Code Veroncia. That is beyond shameful and an utter state of abysmal

      • I'm pretty sure that's not what they're saying at all.

        • And even if that were the case then why does one man at IGN matter?

We already heard these HD conversions will not be up to par so the only reason to waste your time with them is if you have an interest in RE4 or CVX. They've been out long enough for gamers to know what to expect.

Although I did have a good chuckle when he said this:

"Resident Evils 4 and 5 proved the cinematic potential of the franchise, bringing a scale and attention to detail that rivaled Hollywood productions."

Yes I remember the days of trying to increase your rank. As of now I can pretty much get a A or S rank in the Bio/RE games. After playing them so many times they are second nature. Too bad as the only challenge I get from any of the RE games is Bio2 for the Dreamcast and that's when playing on Arrange Modes "Expert" difficulty. Really if you need a challenge play the Expert difficulty as it takes like 12 shells to kill a Zombie. That's what I am talking about. Man but the first Bio, I can beat the game in under 2 hours without even getting damaged and just dodging enemies... I want the good ol days back.

            • I had to buy CV off the US store today at full price. Capcom Europe decided that Germany and New Zealand were not worthy of an HD port of Code Veronica (ratings probably had to do with it, Germany because they have quite restrictive, ours probably because it was slow/expensive) and so it did not turn up on my local PSN to buy, so I just used my last $20 credit on my US account for the privilege. And at least they threw in the free CV avatars though which was nice.

I didn't even get the RE4 ones with the PAL version, no one did. Even though it said it was supposed to.

              • Wait so CVX HD won't be out for psn in Europe? Enetirnel is going to be pissed.. ;>_>

Either way if anyone still has a sore spot about the IGN review here's the original one back when Code Veronica came out on Dreamcast. You can't always argue something was good but hasn't aged well. You either admire it for what it was at the time it came out or you don't. Ten years from now I can not even fathom how RE5 will be perceived. When it comes to Code Veronica HD anything other than how it handles the HD holds no bearing to me.

                • If you're anywhere on the PAL network except Germany and NZ, it's there. We're the only two PAL territories without it. No idea exactly why, but my guess is classification issues. Germany has tougher laws, ours might just be delayed or had been classed as too costly against how many sales they would have gotten.

I've heard rumors that while RE4 turned up on our PSN, it didn't on the XBLM as well. No idea if that's true yet.

                  • Yeah, CVX is on the Europe PSN. Just got it - at £7.99. Special offer for those who have RE4HD already, so I don't begrudge it in any way.

I think it's perfectly reasonable to admire something for what it was when it was originally released, but still recognize that it doesn't hold up by present day standards. It's not being disingenuous or contradictory.

Just because you feel that a game doesn't play well now doesn't necessarily mean you have to believe that it didn't play well the first time you played it. The standard is constantly changing. Formulas that worked well in one generation are constantly being adapted, tweaked, or adjusted as the technology allows.

                      • There any avatar rewards for the 360 version? Because, so far, PSN is offering free profile pictures if you buy them on their console.

For RE4 sure, but CV? They've done a good amount of work with the lighting.

                          • For starters the whole thing has been ported to work on Framework, so the lighting and effects work has been completely redone. Technically there is far more work done on this than RE4 for sure. My understanding is that this was clearly an in house project, whereas the RE4 port was outsourced to some software company in Taiwan or Korea or something.

Everything else IGN complained about (cinema work, animations, control) is just how the game is. Even if they'd completely redone the visuals, the gameplay would have been just the same. This is the point of a HD reissue rather than a HD makeover or even HD remake.

This isn't saying that the reviewer at IGN doesn't have a point about a change in how games are now, but if you spend your entire review saying the later games are better and how this game doesn't compare only on that standard but not really focusing on actually reviewing the game right in front of you, then you're doing a shit job.

                            • If you read the other Code Veronica reviews after the dreamcast one I posted you'll see they scored nearly the same as the HD version. Going through the reviews themselves you get a sense that whomever at IGN was complaining about Code Veronica ultimately wanted them to give the games a make over.

I'm sure it's reviews like this that inspired the direction that RE4 took.

                              • It wasn't just IGN, though. Most people, including the development staff at Capcom, and Mikami himself, felt that Resident Evil needed a major overhaul for the next numbered title in the series. And this is going back to before CODE: Veronica was even finished.
