Nope, RE4's radical changes were dictated by the upper management and producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi, both of which wanted to achieve high sales with the title. When Mikami was threatened with the end of the series, he gave in to the demands and requested the development team (which was discontented with the shift from horror to action) to overhaul the game completely. The staff members were afraid to do this as it was Mikami's series, and in the end, Mikami had to tell them exactly what he had in mind.

It's true that Mikami wanted a completely new game system for RE4, but that is exactly what we got with the hook man version, which already had over-the-shoulder aiming. That is pretty much as far as they wanted to go with the game. Remember that the first RE4 version became Devil May Cry because Mikami disliked how much it deviated from Resident Evil.

    • There's no proof that Mikami didn't want RE4 to be like the final build. When you look at Shadow of the Damned, Vanquish or God Hand, there are traces of what was established by RE4 (customisation, divided into chapters, over-the-shoulder perspective, etc...)

I'm sure he liked what he did, in the end. He said for RE5 that he didn't want to play it because "it will not be the Resident Evil he would have made". Since he made RE4, I think he considered it legit as a Resident Evil game.

Was this in an interview or something? This is the first I've heard of it. I'd love to read the original source if you have it.

I'm not really sure that qualifies as a "completely new game system," though. Judging by the gameplay demo of the hook man version, the over-the-shoulder aiming only occurred in certain circumstances, and you could still only aim in the same three directions (up, down, forward) as the previous games.

Remember that the first RE4 version became Devil May Cry because Mikami disliked how much it deviated from Resident Evil.
I haven't forgotten that, but I think one could reasonably make the argument that even the Resident Evil 4 we got is closer to the original Resident Evil titles than Devil May Cry ever was.

A very recent interview actually with Mikami when he was promoting Vanquish. Unfortunately I don't have the link.

Like Grem pointed out I don't think that Mikami was displeased with the final product at all.

          • I honestly think the CV port is a good step ahead compared to the PS2 version I have, at least in Europe. The game simply runs better (no retarded slowdowns) and it doesn't look that bad.
Too bad Europe got screwed over in general considering RE2 and 3 aren't even up yet on PSN so the only thing you can get for free is RE1. I had all three either way but they should've tried to fix it.

            • Kylie, have SCEE and Capcom Europe even delivered on their promise of the free RE4/CVX avatars that PS Plus subscribers are supposed to get for buying the games?

I'm sure there's a grammar fuck-up there but you get the gist.
              See you in hell.

I scoured the PS blog and found nothing. The original news article for RE4's release the week prior mentioned the avatars, but nothing has been comented on officially. Most of what I saw bitching of this week was the asston of free Uncharted 2 content on the US PSN+ not being on the EU one, so I get the feeling people have moved on already. Should have been easy to sort though, the ones in the US automatically go into your download list when you purchase the games.

On a side I did get a reply from Capcom regarding CVX HD for my region. And the answer was that they have no idea why at this point, and the support guy sent my e-mail up the chain of command. Germany however was indeed for the usual restrictive classification issues.

With Resident Evil 4, however, it was different. Back then, the series had already been a well-known brand and there were many conversations about what the players wanted. In the end, the game sold well, whereas God Hand did not. So I can't always do just what I want. You have to consider that the game must sell afterward.

This time, it's easier because I'm not the only one responsible. With Resident Evil 4, for example, it was completely different. I was under enormous pressure by Capcom. If the game hadn't sold well, it would have been the end, and the series would have been discontinued. The work on Vanquish is less stressful, though, and was really fun.

But it didn't go well, and the schedule wound up in serious danger, and when it came time to find someone to take charge and clean up the project, I was the only real candidate. As a creator, though, I really hated it. I had been a producer for eight years, and the moment I finally get a chance to return to development, it's on RE. That sure wasn't what I intended!
I am sure that Mikami gave his best on RE4 and liked how it turned out, but every time he talks about it, he says that he hated working on it and that he was forced to do make it a profitable action game (which are the sentiments of the other developers as well). His original vision was always to make it the scarier than ever before. He wanted to make games that not everyone likes. Those were Mikami's intentions as a creator, which stood in the way of his job as producer.

                      • I bought it.
                        What a deception.
It's not remastered, they just added some light effects on it.
                        20 bucks for nothing T_T

I'm pretty sure I downloaded all U2 DLC for free this week in the EU store. Was it added later on because of people complaining?

                            • I just checked, seems they quietly added the Uncharted 2 DLC to PS+ section. Nothing about it on the EU PS blog and didn't happen with the weekly store update either.

They didn't add as much as the US got though, didn't include all character skin packs or any avatars.

                              • ^^ Woah, classic. Yeah, must have been done because of all the bitching... at first they just kept saying "Our content refresh date is October 5th."

I suspect what clinched it the slightly unfair point people pointed out that in the same week US Plus members get the UC2 stuff, you can with one of those Subway codes be able to get UC3 MP access on the 1st of October obviously only the in US also. So European players got double screwed. SCEE is useless with it's Plus management, really need to think these things through. Still no avatars for RE4 or CVX I'd assume, either way need to check the local store for the UC2 stuff but probably missing it again.

Prime - While those are choice Mikami quotes and I definitely remember reading the stuff from 1up when Vanquish was coming out, the content of "Shadows" speaks louder than his comments then. He's frequently known for completely changing his mind on things over time too, but the fact that it uses so many basic gameplay elements from Bio4 shows at least while shows he hated being put back in charge in that way for that title he was definitely happy with some elements of it when he was in charge. Regardless, leaving Capcom was probably one of best things he did, at least creatively. But you'd think he'd start to learn that just because you put everything into a game you want, doesn't always make it what others want and therefore a big seller.
