Forced co-op really did make all the difference. Looking at the Art of Resident Evil 5 it's the concept of Chris vs. Wesker as they were compared to Chris and Sheva tag teaming against uroboros Wesker.

Imagine if MGS4 went the co-op route. Johnny following you up until the final battle against Liquid. To me, the impact just doesn't feel the same.

Now granted that isn't a knock against Sheva. Unlike some fans I don't hate her character. I just hate that she was shoehorned to be with you throughout as opposed to being a proper supporting character like Barry or Rebecca.

I thought we was talking about teaser trailers, which Art of RE5 had nothing to do with and wasn't seen until post release of the game. The original RE5 teaser gives a great showing of what was in the final game, deserty town, fast humanish enemies clearly not zombies, Chris as the star (even in the RE5 we got he is, Sheva is used mainly as a info terminal story wise to fill the player in on any relevant events/facts).

edit: Oh course there were people claiming Chris was Billy, or Mike the chopper pilot from RE4 but do these people really count?

The Art of RE5 does go into the early builds shown in that teaser. But I'm using it as a reference to address what the game was going to be about when it was designed as a single player game. That's how the teasers made it out to be. Things that were designed and ultimately tweaked or scrapped are noted. Not just dodges. Sunlight obviously was going to play a part in RE5 before being scrapped. The focus on it was obvious even if it amounted to nothing in the final build.

As far as the big problem however? Co-op just happened to cripple what was so engaging about RE5's teaser initially. Namely that Chris was never alone to fend off these people.

You see him going through these events alone, and it sparks survival horror in the daylight. Exactly what Capcom was trying to promote. Bloody people running and violently lashing out. Now you throw in Sheva as your backup and it's even more action oriented. You have someone watching your back at all times.

You can even tell that despite them brushing off the controversy claims they made real attempts to appease the black community. We had additional villagers that happened to be different minorities, and now Sheva was bumped up from a supporting character to a main character from beginning to end.

The whole sun/heat affecting the player thing was chalked up to a mistranslation from the original interview they came from. Sunlight plays just as big a "role" in the final build as it did with the older ones. Also, BH5 already featured many ethnicities as enemies even in the first real trailer, because Africa already is pretty diverse in most regions.

Co-op ruined the game though and they focused too much on action and whacky set-pieces (the entire Tricell facility). The character and enemy designs were also very pathetic.

What do you mean? Just because one of the toughest enemies is a giant man eating vagina, the big evil ouroboros turned out to be a mass of wiggling phallic tentacles that literally writhe across the skin of it's victims, penetrating them on occasion, and Jill's suit was apparently designed for an S&M party certainly doesn't make it seem like Capcom employs people with some very odd fetishes among it's designers at all.

Tha fact that they work on RE6 over 2 years without announcement actually gives me hope. It shows how much they want make this game better than RE5.

keiji inafune said that before he left Capcom. He said they start work on it in late 2009. Pre-production I guess.

I think there was an interview that mentioned it...but honestly, I'd be shocked if they hadn't started at least brain storming before RE5 was even released. How much actual programming and such has been done is unknown - you'd have to be fairly naive to think RE6 isn't a top priority for Capcom. Which is as it should be - the Resident Evil series makes money like an A-list actress willing to get naked.

If I recall correctly, he said that the game is being developed and we'll hear more about it shortly, he never mentioned when the development started. Anyway it doesn't matter, RE is Capcom's flagship series so it makes sense that development started right after the release of 5, like Darkmoon said.

Explain more about this mistranslation as I'm quite curious to hear about it. Since the internet is a game of telephone lots of sites were covering on this "sun mechanic" but of course if it stemmed from a mistranslation then that's something to look into. Lord knows I wouldn't doubt it. In the past people were falsely claiming that Sherry was confirmed in the game so I know how messy this can be.

Also in regards to the ethnic minorities you understand that this sort of thing happens now where the teasers show off something and then add more down the line. We didn't start seeing women ganados until late in the game. I remember playing an early RE4 build back in the day that had no woman ganado and the only implication we had as to what happened to them came from that impaled soul Leon makes a quirky sex discrimination comment about. As far as 5's concerned Kijuju is a fictional setting in Africa so no one was batting an eyelash asking themselves where the other minorities were based on the region. The controversy stemmed from "white protagonist killing blacks". Next thing you know a supporting black character is bumped up to a lead and we see a lot more white villagers. Going off the teasers it does leave you to speculate. If this was populated by other ethnics why not have them in the teasers?

I remember in a better translation it was said about the players vision adjusting when going in/out of buildings and adjusting to new light/dark levels for a few moments.

I think the Sherry claim was from Xbox World Magazine, but they pulled the story from their website quickly.
