ORC outsold Revelations due to the handheld system that the latter was exclusive to. Had Revelations been available on the big boy consoles, it would not have been hard to imagine it vastly outselling ORC.

Actually, the 3DS has sold 7 million units in Japan alone as of August. It's apparently the most pre-ordered system in nintendo history in addition. Sure, I don't think it'll reach console numbers, but to call it unsuccessful is pretty ignorant.

Well the NDS sold over 150 million units, so unless the 3DS sells another 130 million units in the next five to ten years I think to call it unsuccessful is a pretty accurate description of its sales.

The argument of unsuccessful RE titles isn't quite justified imo. Often the success of a RE title is equivelant to the success of the system. RE0 and RER were both unsuccessful, but so were the NGC and 3DS respectively. The PS3 and 360 have much bigger audiences so for ORC to have bigger numbers than RER isn't a surprise. Hell I'm a RE fan and I still haven't bought a 3DS or RER, not because RER is a bad game but because the 3DS is an undesirable system.

RE0 sold 1.3 million on the NGC. RE4 sold 1.7 million on the NGC and 3.6 million on the PS2. This just shows the more popular the system the better the sales.

Size of a console install base does not affect sales like you are thinking it does. The 3DS has sold twice what Dreamcast did, yet CV has sold more than Revelations, 3DS sales are about the same as GC, yet Revelations does not match any GC RE games sales. Your RE4 numbers are well off too, on GC RE4 sold 1.6m, PS2 RE4 sold 2.2 million. Only a 600k difference when the PS2 sold 6-7 times what the GC did.

Thanks for the corrections. The exact numbers were't really important, the point I was getting at is that in recent years a lot of the unsuccessful (survival horror esque) RE games have been on unsuccessful consoles. Capcom are making risks on systems with a small user base and stating that survival horror doesn't sell, where they could be making risks on a system with a large user base and getting far more accurate data. ORC is just a perfect example of a sub par game still selling well on a popular system.

The 3DS had a very small amount of BH fans in its install base. Don't know how many times I've seen "I'd buy it, but I don't have a 3DS".

I understand that. But I was just pointing out that the more traditional-like RE game came out on a Nintendo system, while a more mainstream-friendly RE game came out on the HD twins. And it seems that Capcom's strategy paid off in those two cases.

Thing is, they're doing what Nintendo did to survive this gen. There was no future for them going after cores. Not with MS and Sony getting most of them.

Capcom is going after cores and casuals. But its clear that they're listening and targeting one more than the other. They have said it themselves.

The 3DS is on pace right now to outsell the NDS, so...

Edit: And even if it doesn't hit the same mark as NDS, pretty sure even just 50 million units is a success. Hell, the very moment they turn a profit makes it a success, so really it already is successful because they've already started making money from it. It doesn't have to outdo the NDS to be successful, that's silly.

However, I do agree that Revelations got shafted sales-wise due mostly to the reasons Paul and others have stated: It was exclusive to one handheld with a fairly new install base since it wasn't even a year old yet, while ORC was released on two home consoles, and then the PC as well, and both consoles had 6 or so years to build up a large fanbase.
