  • Two unknown Resident Evil 2 music tracks

Hi all, folks. It's me and my Resident Evil videos again. This time I bring all a video about two seemingly distinct music pieces found in the sound code of Resident Evil. These music pieces are actually variations (which I decided to call them) of each other, nonetheless I do not recall hearing them at any point in the game.

The first variation you hear seems to be a rough mix as it contains less instrumentation.

The second variation you hear sounds much more refined, containing one more instrument playing in the track. Presumably, this would have been the final draft before it would be disused.

I did not see anything like this documented on YouTube, so I took the liberty of uploading it for all to examine. These were found on a RE2 PSF folder over at Zophar. Whoever ripped them in the first place, thanks.

    Enjoy.

I think I will try asking Masami Ueda about this.

This looks like an ending theme to Extreme Battle...

It's not the Extreme Battle sound ending...

This sounds a lot like the instruments used in RE1...or even a mix of 1 and 2.

        This is really weird.

This reminds me of a FF7 song. Interesting.

Yeah it definitely sounds Final Fantasy-ish. It would probably have sounded out of place when compared to the rest of the music if it was ever used, which might be one of the reasons why it was scrapped. Definitely interesting though.

It's a pity that the rips on Zophar never actually state which version of the game the music was ripped from, though it makes me tempted to poke around the files in the games.

Some of the sequences can sometimes be put together wrong with the wrong instrument set and can occasionally make a familiar song completely and utterly different... Listening to the instruments used, it sounds slightly similar to "Left Alone?" as I can hear a similar backing instrument timing and pitch change that sounds nearly the same for both of them.

I know there were some single song music rips from the demos and the like, but have there been complete rips from all of the games, promotional and/or demo builds done or at least archived?

(As you never know what you can find in some of them, I just recently finished up a complete rip of all of the PS1 Clock Tower music, SFX and found some stuff that sounds like it came directly out of RE1).

The music would have been dumped from the disc, they're in the PSF format (PlayStation Sound Format) and can be converted with a plugin for Winamp and the like. Within the game files, they usually are like this - a sequence file, like a custom MIDI for the PS1 may sometimes be contained within a SEP or VAB, VAG file and those files need to be split or particular file types can be ripped with a file scanner or splitter.

VB and VH files, one handles the instruments and one is the actual header of the game. Sometimes these can be interchanged to get different instrument sets, whereas some of them might cover multiple songs. Changing them around can lead to odd variations or may even show some differences so, let's say....

                      1 & 2 are the default sound
2 & 3 sounds wrong because it's got the wrong instruments
1 & 3 sounds nearly the same as the default, but there's a slight pitch or instrument change that you don't hear properly in the game.

I've come across this with Clock Tower 2 and Ghost Head/Struggle Within, that there's additional variations of some songs, including the games' main themes that you don't hear within the main game and are just floating around the files as a bit of filler.

The music is from Zophar.net, but sadly they don't state which copy of the games' they've used to get the PSF rips from otherwise I'd probably be looking through the files for RE2 to check and see if there were more.

(I'm only discussing this for the terms of unused/scrapped prototype music or unreleased soundtracks such as the CT games).

I made a blog post about this on 1up.com, includes a quote from RE2 composer Masami Ueda concerning the specific tracks.
