The True Essence of a Resident Evil Fan?

So you can like resident evil and not be a true fan???

I think a fan of anything will still have dislikes of certain aspects of anything... I think you are a fan period if you like resident evil. you two are arguing like who is a better person because of these aspects. (insert slap fight here) LOL


You don't have to like every thing about resident evil to be a fan. Shit no on does on here lol. No one can agree on anything for the most part. Every one has different views of is it's not cannon it's not resident evil etc... I personally don't have any hate on any game. Of course I like the original games much more, being re2 my fav since it was my first ever video game ever on PS1. (I was really poor as a kid and my PS1 was the very first thing I had ever got that was expensive lol and my dad bought it for us and the game scared the shit out of me) So it was my biggest impression as a kid and I was hooked and had to have everything resident evil. but anyways, you get my point.

I don't think there's much point to this discussion (ie. The essence or a fan). I agree with what alexdz said above; in that you have to be able to criticise something.
I'd consider myself quite a big RE fan and I'm happy to admit that I think Umbrella Chronicles is an absolutly horrible game. Even choosing a main entry, RE5 is really a poor game. I haven't played it in about a year, and haven't even bothered to finish the LIN and DE chapters.

I love Resident Evil since when I first play RE2 in 1999. I love the old school style of Resident Evil games, but I also love RE4, RE5 and Revelations. I am sure I will love RE6 either! Those four "recent" RE games are improved from the old formula. But in all those four games you can still sence atmosphere and mythology behind this series, which is something I can't say about ORC. When was ORC first announced I almost jump out of the window from luck and happines I felt. Just imagined return to Raccoon City a fight again with Hunters, Lickers, Tyrants, ZOMBIES!!! And than with every new trailer I was more and more sad and disgusted with what I saw. I am HUGE Residen Evil fan and always will be, but I will always hate games like ORC because it isn't game worth of the Resident Evil title.

If you are a fan of the series, no matter which era or title it was that got you into it, you are fan of that community and support it. It's not for anyone else to decide whether you are more 'true' than anyone else. It's all purely subjective.

The only time I ever draw a line on the fan issue is when people have on occasion said to me, they only like the movies of Resident Evil and not the games. If they watched the Anderson movies and got into the games as a result of that then fair enough.

Even then though - who I am to say that? It's a nice debate, who ultimately the issue of a fan really is in the eye of the beholder.

But it really does irk me when you have someone who says you've got to of been there from beginning to be a real fan, such elitist bullshit. There's people who haven't been there from the start who've come into this community and contributed far more that some of these 'from the beginning fans' and it's still not for anyone else to decide whether of not they are more, or less of a fan than you me, the person who posted above, the person who posts below.

True story. In my case, I'm currently paying daily overdraft fees for my bank account is several hundred dollars negative. Why you ask?

1.) Complete Nemesis type 3 figure

2.) Seller fucked up and had to refund my payment the first time, so I resent the payment and now PayPal has been holding the refund for a week while my account gets fucked so very hard.

Point is, even though I got laid off recently and my girlfriend's bringing down asura's wrath on my ass just for making a wreckless purchase in the first place- I'm still happy to get this figure. Sure, it's a hunk of plastic in the form of a giant deformed blob of shit, but I've wanted it for so long and anyone who's a figure collector knows how hard it is to get one. Sacrifices and stupidity, all for a game I love dearly.

Well, I was trolling, but it's funny how fast I can blow my paycheck on shiny discs, and live on bread and Pepsi for the rest of the month. I really need my next paycheck for other things, but I just got a lead on my holy (non-prototype) grail, and I'm going to follow that to the very end.

Does that make me a true fan? Nah, just makes me a total sucker. And I love it.

To me a real fan is someone who loves and respects the RE franchise.

I've been very annoyed by all the "hate" towards the new games. Every time they announce a new tittle, many say " is crap, the series is now dead i hate it i'm not even buyng it". That is just so critical, because the game hasn't even been released yet and you are judging it by the cover!! (read "trailers and few screens" XD). And the same about the live action movies!! ('the hell, maybe also the cgi films) ^^

When RE4 came out i was eskeptical, but when i played it I really liked. We all have one or two, or a few games that we don't like, especially when is a spin off, but is not the end of the world if they don't deliver an awesome epic gamplay and story, maybe the next will be the one we really like.

So, like i said, a real Resident Evil fan is someone that loves RE and respectfully disagree when a not so awesome (even shitty) tittle is announced and move on and hopes for a better one. That is to me the essence of a fan.

It also has nothing to do with how many things you buy!! We all have different Socioeconomics status, so having a bunch of stuff doesn't make you better. I come from a family that, well, is not rich, but we have some stability, and because of that i had the posibility to buy so many things, but that doesn't make me a better fan that someone who just buy the games!! In fact that just mean I' m a crazy Resident Evil collector.

It's fun seeing just how many different view points we have here (and Anders trolling) about this. Which was pretty much what I expected to happen. There are definitely some points I especially like though. You need to be able to criticize the series being a favourite. A lot of folks recently have been getting very riled up if negative comments are made towards a game they like, and that's not a good thing. Defend something if you must (Canas has to all the time, poor soul) but don't start spitting and yelling.

It's definitely true there's no such thing as a true fan though. Just different kinds. And that's probably the best thing about being a fan of anything - the different people and different kinds of thinking that's brought together by something like this.

as i have said a billion times resident evil will never become what it ones was.... thats history now. dont get me wrong i love the old resident evil games ( horror)
but capcom found a new way..the action way does it make me feel let down ?...sure it does, because thats what got us into resident evil in the first place
but with that said im also a insane fan of the whole resident evil universe.. so because they add more action ( capcom).. will it stop me from buying future resident evil titles ?....
not in a million years ! i love this damn series.. i wont turn my back on my beloved resident evil franchise just because capcom chooses to go in a diffrend direction..
im giving operation raccon city a shot because ( in my case) outbreak turned out to be a mega hit in my eyes .. so im trying to repeat history for myself again.
by giving this game a chance...

Because I love Resident Evil. Just because I hate ORC and would rather it doesn't exist doesn't mean it's not part of Resident Evil, and doesn't mean Ill ignore it. But just because I love Resident Evil doesn't mean I won't tell people, loudly, my opinion that this or that us bullshit. I don't like Wesker returning from the grave. I don't like Leon's smug personality in RE4. I don't like the shitty job they do on translating things. And I won't keep my mouth shut just because I'm a fan.

It's simple. If you shut up and accept what you don't like, it won't change things. I don't think sitting here, on a forum, talking about it will change much either. But not buying it and showing Capcom that, no, actually I don't want a team based shooter with production values a 5th year class can beat does send a message. Even if it's a quiet and lonely message. I don't care if I'm a minority or majority - it's my opinion, and I'll express it.

I don't like playing games online with strangers. Alzaire and I recently had a blast on Diablo II, and some friends and I intend to do a run through on it soon as well. I don't mind online games. I just hate people acting like cocks.

And yeah, Resident Evil has changed. No one expects it to go back. But to think the horror is gone forever? Madness. It's what made the series. Look at Revelations - they made a good go of that, and someone told me it was selling out pretty fast (this may be because the initial run was limited due to that printing error, however) and it certainly seems to be doing better than RE: Mercs. People are a lot more positive.

Capcom got blasted in RE5 for not enough horror. I'm not saying they're going to dump the action. I'm not an idiot - clearly RE6 is going to be even more action packed than RE5, if not so much as ORC. But they might have a crack at adding horror back in again. Leon's section and the not-zombies-really-ganados suggests they're at least trying. And that's all I really ask.
