The True Essence of a Resident Evil Fan?

The only reason I'm hating on ORC is because of the care free approach to making the game fit in. We are a passionate fanbase, and had it not been for the fanbase and certain individuals piecing it all together then we wouldn't have as a good an idea as we do regarding the storyline and backgrounds.etc.
Then a game comes along, ignores most of the established canon and pisses on all that hard work. As a game I couldn't care less how it played or anything. Survivors a load of shit, but I love it because it works as a story and is a great chapter of the series. At least it contributes somewhat.
ORC doesn't contribute anything, other than gaping contradictions, and that's why i'm hating on it. Like Darkmoon says, you have to be able to voice your opinions either way. Capcom generally get a free pass from for a lot of things, I praise them immensely, so it's only right I'm able to voice my opinion when I actually don't like something.http://www.projectumbrella.net The BIOHAZARD/RESIDENT EVIL Compendium

I got into Resident Evil because of the investigative elements, the locations, and the immoral science. Characters and enemies also obviously play a role, but the first three are paramount to me. I liked the detective aspect of the original games; the piecing together of the clues that revealed the full story. Game don't really do that much anymore. Now it's mostly long cut scenes and dialog during gameplay. There's a severe lack of investigation in the newer titles.
I'm also a huge fan of the locations, particularly those in Raccoon City. The Arklay mansion, the management training facility, the R.P.D., Rockfort island, and many of the Outbreak locations are almost characters in and of themselves. I also loved how these locations used "trapped in a maze" designs; that is, you find items and progressively unlock more sections of the maze. Most of the time, the newer games in the series don't do this. Exploration was the key, not mowing down everything in your path with machine guns like every other game out there.
The newer games generally lack the "essence of RE," in my opinion. RE4 had some of it with the earlier locations, Revelations had some of it with the ship and the overall feel (in the first few Jill chapters only), and RE5 contained absolutely nothing worthwhile. RE5 will always be the "Other M" of the RE series to me. And ORC? Don't even get me started. I don't feel any soul in that game whatsoever. The city is bland and completely different from the Raccoon we knew and loved from RE2, RE3, and (particularly) the Outbreak games. The actual Raccoon had character; this version of it is simply dull. And the characters... oh, man, are they terribly designed. Maybe they'd work if this were Star Wars or Mass Effect, but not in RE. Thankfully, it's non-canon, and thus irrelevant.
So if I think the newer RE games are "merely a shadow of their former self," am I not a true fan of the series?Mass production? Ridiculous!

Arguing about what defines a "true fan" is pretty damn inane in the first place if you ask me. I think what I'd argue instead is what defines a "sensible fan," and by now, I think people need to stop bitching that games like RE4 and 5 aren't "true" Resident Evil games. What they've done is just expand the definition of what Resident Evil is, and what's wrong with that? Granted, I'd love an installment that's more of a genuine throwback to the older titles (Revelations was pretty satisfying in this regard though), but I'm still a huge fan of the series because each new main entry manages to win me over no matter what the game is like. That doesn't mean fans of older HAVE to love the new ones too, or vice versa, but it's simply juvenile to criticize newer entries as not being "true" RE games.
On the subject of ORC, I don't think it's worth "true fans" getting their knickers bunched up over the conceptual style of the game, nor do I think the game is worth defending just because it has Resident Evil on the box. It's an over-the-top what if scenario that is meant to be viewed outside the scope of what Resident Evil is traditionally viewed as, and that's perfectly fine. Instead of people bitching about it simply being a squad based shooter RE game (which I think is actually a pretty cool idea for a spin off honestly), people should be more focused on bitching that the game just doesn't look very good (though I do admit that many folks seem to recognize this).
Anyway, my point is, Resident Evil can be a lot of things. It can be slow and methodical like REmake, it can be fast paced and multiplayer driven like ORC, or it can be something in between like Revelations or RE3. People should be more concerned with how well each Resident Evil game accomplishes itself rather than simply judging it conceptually.
tl;dr
