I think they are used to create the acid/flame/whatever rounds from normal grenades, similar to the gunpowder method in BH3.

He ain't got that yellow knife-holder. Besides, you can see clearly that Leon's face looks more updated. The 1.5 one looked fat and the hairstyle was a bit messy. Here's a comparison between both models:

After closer inspection of the beta 1 footage you can see his knife holster in some shots and not in other shots, the easiest one to see it in is the burning lab shots, you can see it glowing on his right leg from the fire. I guess that confirms it's a mash up of the two games although I'm probably very late on that conclusion.

Oh yeah, I'd forgot all about that scene. I'm looking forward to getting a new computer so I can start messing around with things again, there's a lot I want to do, especially with these Trial Edition/SourceNext hybrids.

Despite the mash up of footage it is clear that they had a working build in the early stages of Bio2. By looking at dates we can get an idea of exactly what they had done. E3 is held during summer and Directors Cut was released in September 1997 (I'm not sure on the date the build was compiled), so we could estimate beta 1 as June 1997 and the Trial Edition as September 1997. Can anyone confirm the date the Trial Edition was compiled?

Two months is actually quite a lot of time development wise, Capcom seem capable of getting a lot of work done over just a few months. We know by looking at the Trial Edition, assuming it's an accurate representation of development, just how far Capcom had got with the game. Thanks to some of the stuff Ys1 posted in his thread we can make a mini timeline and see just how much they got done in what time they had.

      - April 15th 1997 is pre beta 1
      - June 1997 is when E3 was held with beta 1
      - July 1st 1997 is post beta 1
      - September 1997 is the release of the Trial Edition

Some things I'm curious to know about the Trial Edition:

      - Do any of the other Bio2 backgrounds pre-date June 1997?
      - Is there a beta scene where the Licker crashes through the glass ceiling?

If there are any backgrounds that predate June 1997 then we know they are from beta 1 its self, also if a beta scene exists where the Licker crashes through the ceiling that would be further evidence to suggest it was a coherent build that featured both characters, as it's the one scene we can confirm happens to Claire in beta 1. We know the backgrounds are there for certain, and if my memory serves me correctly this does not happen to Leon in this build.

Oh, I see. Does that mean that 1.5 just had FA sprays then and no other means of healing? I guess that would explain the antidote spray.

One thing I am curious about; was there ever any evidence that the body armor was implemented? If you look at the item list we got from Curator from 1.5, no body armor appears on there. And AFAIK, there isn't any evidence of it in screenshots either, nor any remnants of it in early RE2 builds. Was it an idea they had yet implemented? Or is it really well hidden in 1.5?

Body armor probably acted in the same way the side pack does in the final, where it isn't an inventory item and you have to select whether or not to put it on the same way you would for pressing a switch.

Those are still images from the GameInformer website.

Nope, they actually turn into grenade launcher rounds when mixed.

I found my old ps1 with my gameshark WITH the massive code i had to enter that lets you access these items. I will get around to making a video of this. It was a pretty cool concept, i'm not sure they why took it out.

That's exactly what they are for.

As I said previously, that footage is from the real 1.5. Not from beta 1. There's more footage of that that involves zombies and the spider-man. Zombies with different animation than the ones from the beta 1/trial. That's why Leon has the knife-holder, that one is the old model. The one that appears in beta 1 footage (the ones that are not from 1.5 Labs) is the trial model.

They just mixed up footages from 2 different games.
Here's the trailer, you can compare the zombies animation between the labs and other parts and conclude that the footages are from different builds:
Rare footage of the Resident Evil 2 / Biohazard 2 Beta version 1 from UltraGameplayers. This is not from the beta where you can only play Leon or from Versio...

I'm confused as to why they would even mash 1.5 game play footage with the new re2 they were working on. Capcom does some stupid ass shit sometimes.

The spas12 and HK are tow weapons i'm so curious about, as they were found in 1.5 but you can clearly see them being used in the "new" resident evil 2 game play.

I figure they weren't required since we already have the Shotgun and it's upgrade in 2, as well as the sub-machine gun. Either the Spas and HK weren't necessary, or the upgrade to the shotgun, and the sub-machine gun were replacements for them.

The animations for the zombies are slightly different in this beta from final 2 as well. The characters seem to shoot much faster too. Probably a hold-over from 1.5.

I guess they planned to keep the labs near enough the same and didn't think we'd notice the difference, nor think it was important to keep absolute consistency in something which by all rights is a work in progress and subject to change at any time. You have to admit though they're pretty action packed trailers, they obviously didn't have much work done on Bio2 at this point, nothing that was interesting enough to put in a trailer, nothing that didn't spoil the first fifteen minutes of the game.

I'm still trying to get a good idea on what beta 1 was about. I'm confident that in beta 1 Leon's scenario was the A scenario and Claire's scenario was the B scenario. What's interesting is that in the trailer we know for certain a few things. In the beta 1 trailer Leon encounters the Licker cutscene in the west corridor and Claire encounters the Licker cutscene on the 1F next to the burning helicopter. What we know about the final game is that you only encounter one or the other, in the A scenario the Licker is on the ceiling in the west corridor and in the B scenario the Licker crashes through the glass sky light. Claire is also seen on the B side of the streets in one of the trailers.

I think it's likely beta 1 still had both characters on a single disc like in Bio1.5. Both A scenario and B scenario stuff is there on the Trial Edition, enemy placements, cutscenes, etc, the game was built with both scenarios at mind even at this point.

Ah, yes, I remember seeing all those unused items in the Versus RE2 Perfect Guide. It was theorized that the bolts later became the chess plugs (makes sense I suppose) and that the watch was Ada's before she got the photo.

I'm assuming they just changed their minds as to what weapons they wanted regarding the shotgun and SMG.

I think they opted for the upgrade parts route since the amount of weapons/upgrades in 1.5 felt redundant. Now granted, the weapons in 1.5 had different tiers/stats, it didn't really feel very survival horror-ish. You basically get to stockpile four different handguns and two tiers of every other standard weapon types. Even the knife gets a pipe replacement. RE2's upgrade parts made it so that you could get more powerful weapons, but without needing to have extras of the same gun types.
