Silent Hill also gives the solution to his piano puzzle, does that make it the answer for the solution? No!
You have to use your head and solve it yourself sometimes.
We're not talking about Silent Hill though, are we? And yes, that's true. Where did I say otherwise?

You're being pedantic.
You just said "the game gives outright the answer". Which is not actually true.
The game gives you a hint of what might be the answer. Like Outbreak or Code Veronica.
Even RE3, which was one of the easiest of the classics.
EDIT
And no, we're not talking about Silent Hill. That was just a random example, not a subject change.

I said the games tend to outright give you the answer in regards to certain things like keycodes or safe combinations and what have you. Because they're just numbers. Very specific but you seem to have missed it.
Also, BH3 didn't have any puzzles involved in the files. You had to figure them out on-the-spot, such as the water treatment puzzle towards the end of the game. THAT'S a puzzle.

Yeah, I missed it. But anyway, the puzzles were something needed to beat the game. It may be frustating, but it's surely better than the constant go-forward of the newer games. And was a good way of forcing the player to learn the storyline.

Indeed. But BH5 has a few puzzles of its own. Though I haven't played it in quite a while so I only remember one specific one.

Yes, RE3 had a puzzle which you needed to read the file. The TV commercial computer password.
The only hint the file gave you was "remember that the password is a word which everyone is familiar with, and that everytime a product is shipped, it needs to be updated".

Sorry to interrupt this most interesting exchange, but what are your thoughts exactly on puzzles? Do you wish they were still abundant in recent BH titles? Did you ever like them to begin with? Yes a great deal of them consisted of annoying backtracking but I thought it added nicely to the overall experience.
You may have two aid sprays, a magnum and a shotgun, but if you can't figure out the puzzle, you're ass isn't going anywhere. I enjoyed having to think as much as kill and it also gave you a nice break from the stress of things outside the door trying to eat you.

I'd like if they were back in a similar capacity to BH3, but I'd also rather have a larger focus on exploration and investigation ala BH1 with a more hub-like yet isolated environment and branching paths. Puzzles don't really work well in a linear game, but in a game with a focus on exploration, you can go around looking for clues toward the solution potentially feeling lost and a little hopeless. The older games themselves don't really do this much at all, though.
I agree. The puzzles especially in RE4/5 felt a bit akward, like they were placed there simply to shut people up about puzzles. Alan Wake/SH Downpour had some pretty interesting puzzles with exploration, but obviously they can't really be implemented the same way in the newer BH titles because of the different style of gameplay. Nor do I think puzzles would work in the middle of a war/battlefield setting. No longer do you have the same solitude of a mansion or abandoned laboratory. There's simply too much shit exploding in your face to pause and solve puzzles.

Blending would be the best word for it I think, if you do not adjust to what most consumers want you will fall hard.
Resident Evil would be dead if it was not for bringing in these new features, we as survival horror fans are not enough to keep a big budget series a float.
Silent Hill is the perfect example of that, it has become a background series because it fails to keep up with the times.
