There's a slight problem though... apparently Capcom lost most of the original assets/geometric data for REmake (Umbrella Chronicles was made using low-poly versions of those areas). Japanese developers up until the mid-2000s were known for being shit at making backups of their own games.

And where is your source of this information may I ask?

No need for cropping or stretching. You also make it sound like it is much long-winded process when in reality this is not the case, all what one has to do is just do it as a batch render, just leave it on, grab a tea/coffee or if it's an overnight process then leave it and sleep!

All the placements of object in the scene DOES NOT have to change, in fact they just stay exactly where they are since the framing of each shot doesn't change itself.

Look more into how the process work, you will then realise how much of a cop-out that Capcom is doing and you're all falling for it. Hence a Petition for them to do a proper job (rather than a hack job/defect product and selling it at full next-gen price) is absolutely adequate.
Ignoring even if they did have the 3D elements in full, those 16:9 frames might have to be changed unlike you said. You're now viewing an aspect ratio which provides more vision, which was chosen in it's 4:3 field of view to obscure an enemy, object, or something else until the next camera change. Also depending on where that camera was placed in the 3D environment, it may have been up against a wall or 3D object just outside the 4:3 viewing area which in 16:9 would now be clipped through by the wider angle. There would be a lot of work to get every angle perfect again and matching the original placements as best as possible, turning the game almost into a 2nd styled 'director's cut' with altered angles that way. It's wouldn't be anywhere near as easy as you're making it sound.

I understand where you are coming from, but it's not like the vision will be THAT wider like 'cinerama', plus the cameras DONT have to be moved whatsoever, clipping would not be an issue as well. You also have to remind yourself how often do you see an enemy that was that close to you when entering a room?

If this still remains a problem, a re-rendering of the backgrounds will still be necessary but in 4:3, so effectively at a resolution of 1440x1080. I would prefer a crop from that than a crop from an upscaled, de-noised, sharpened and compressed 512x448.

Good news for PS3 owners anyway.

Resident Evil HD Remaster (English & Japanese) for PlayStation 3Support both English & Japanese subtitle and voice, language is base on PS3 system language.Based on the original title of the same name for the PlayStation and taking elements from the stunning Gamecube remake, this upgraded version will now run at modern standards:720prunning at 30 frames per second with5.1 surround sound support, and the option between4:3 and 16:9 aspectratios. And while the above mentioned is merely cosmetic, the graphical leap is as intense as the harrowingjump scares Resident Evil is known for; Capcom has insured that every single room has been given ...

A reasonable price and free shipping if your not looking to get it in an immediate hurry.

What does it mean though when it says "English & Japanese"? Does that mean there is a option to make the entire game English or will the main menu and inventory screens still be in Japanese?

Dumb question but I don't know these things

It's probably the Chinese/Hong Kong version of the game...They're always called the 'Asian' versions. Since the game's VA is obviously in English, then I would be leaning towards the game having actual english subtitles/menus, like most Chinese/Korean versions of any/most games!

If you check for the actual 'Japanese' version of the game in play-asia, then you will see that it doesn't say anything about having anything in English...In fact! For this HD Remaster, it tells you that the 'Asian' version of the game will actually feature 'English' subtitles, right on the 'Japanese' version of their game page.
