  • UC Interview

Gamepro has an interview up with Masachika Kawata. He says some interesting stuff, including the teams desire to get the game online.

MK: We'd definitely like to bring online elements into the game; both Umbrella Chronicles and to future titles. We don't have any [definite] plans, though we'd like to. [editor note: Capcom's PR team stressed that online is not a currently planned feature, merely a desire on the part of the developers].

MK: This is basically a revisiting of the same places and the same people [of past RE games]. Because of the nature of an arcade-style shooter, which is on rails, you won't be able to go and venture out to extra places. There are no new areas inside places you've seen before. But you can perhaps look forward to a new scenario that is something you haven't seen before. Not only will you get the general outline of the events in the Resident Evil series, but you'll find out what happened to Umbrella, and we'll take you a little bit further into the elements of the back story you many not of heard before. Perhaps there's a character you wanted to know [more about] what happened [to him].

I believe personally they need to do more to make this game worthwhile. Arcade shooters are becoming increasingly stale, and really the only reason to play them are because of the immersion IN the arcades, where you're there with the gun on the big screen with everyone around you.

Now of course, you can use the Wiimote to do a bit better, but it’s still nothing like a gun, and only three different weapons? Sure, they have the leaning or looking or whatever it is, but they should also have the inventory system for healing, and I think some kind of system for increased enemy interactivity. For example, almost every enemy in RE had some kind of energy draining grab that the player had to struggle out of. It never feels right when a zombie is reduced to swiping or clawing due to inability of making them bite like they should. I would much like some kind of system where the enemies can actually perform some kind of first person grab attack which required certain Wii motions to escape (not just flailing).

And no sign of Leon or Claire

Still going to buy this but in the next few months I have to decide between Super Paper Mario, Metroid Prime 3, Super Mario Galaxy and Umbrella Chronicles so it's a tough call and that's just on the Wii . . .

I was going to say you forgot SSBB, but then I remembered, that's not a choice. You are legally obligated to buy that game as soon as it comes out whether or not you have a Wii, simply for being the best fighting series ever made.

Exactly! Although since the last update it's release date has apparently slipped! I blame this guy:

            Nice little movie too . . .
