  • IGN Interviews Takeuchi

A new interview is up on IGN from E3 with Resident Evil 5's producer, Jun Takeuchi. Some of the details learned in the interview are below.
    • Host will always be Chris
    • Coop is hop in/out, though this will be restricted at certain times
    • Anything you earn in a coop game can be transferred into your own game
    • Certain Achievements can only be earned in coop play
    • Sheva is so adept with firearms and hand-to-hand combat, that she can even overwhelm Chris
    • Sheva is always in the game, and will be taken over by AI when you have noone else playing coop
    • If one player is killed, then the game is over and must be restarted at a checkpoint
    • Aiming will be customizable, though no details are given on this
    • Expect some differences between the platforms, though they will not affect RE5 as a whole
    • Split-screen/Single-system coop is not in, but they are trying to do it (no promises)

Project Omega also pointed out something that escaped me. The parasite form looks eerily similar to an early (scrapped) Resident Evil 4 version. It seems Capcom still do re-use old ideas.

It may just be me...but "Sheva is ALWAYS in the game" makes this seem like it will be 2 characters together throughout the entire game. RE has always been about the dread / horror of being on your own (for most of the game). Having a full-time partner (to assist you) makes this just another shooter, IMO.

ALSO, the fact that you are constantly responsible for Sheva's well-being is not cool. I mean, if she dies, then it's automatically game over.

I have faith that Capcom will produce a great game, but I am wary at the moment of the previously mentioned effects of full-blown co-op...

I was about to say this lol. Yeah, no complaining, it worked in RE0, why can't it work for RE5?

RE4/5 is a very different play-style from past entries in the series. Unless they get it absolutely perfect, its going to lead to lots of frustration.

I know RE0 had 2 characters working together for most of the game, but as Dot said, it is almost completely different than the experience of RE4/5 style of gameplay.

Right now, it seems like the design of RE5 is geared more toward 2 players playing cooperatively. The AI-controlled partner feature for single player seems like it could be very, very frustrating. Just think about the problems with Ashley in RE4. Only this time, she's always there and always in danger. Sheva is much cooler than and much more useful than Ashley, but still, with the amount of enemies in RE5, there could be a lot of "game over" screens. Imagine you're running across the village to save Sheva from giant-hammer-dude, who has her hoisted in the air by her neck (and she has very little life left), only for you to be grabbed from behind. While you struggle to break free from the clutches of a random villager, she dies. Those scenarios are going to leave you screaming at the screen.

But maybe I am just a crappy game player?

I like all the new facts about the co-op...but I really would just rather play as Chris. Personally I didn't like 0. The whole co-op feel reminds me somewhat of games like Army of Two and such. It still looks like they have a lot to work on, so perhaps within the coming months it will be more appealing.

Nothing really alarming in that interview besides the "differences between platforms" though to be honest if it's just the same differences we saw in DMC4 between the 360 and PS3 then I have no problems. =P

Co-op might be fun if you can play with a friend but I would rather just play alone. Resident Evil has always been a single player game and AI controllered character is going to be a lot of headaches. I personally didn't like RE 0 and having Ashley in RE 4 sucked but the system with Ashley wasn't that bad. If they can get the AI to work right in RE 5 it might be okay but I think they are taking a chance.

The way I see it is this. Sheva always there = twice the number of enemies that you can moe down with ease which = twice as many enemies attacking which = survival action at it's finest. So it's a real shame I'm not fond of shooters, really.

The co-op thing is not an issue for me. I don't play co-op except with my friends, because I dislike people dicking around over something as silly as a game. So it's unlikely I'll ever play co-op. I will be annoyed if that means I can't get to certain areas of a map or earn certain weapons, though. Don't care about achievements.

In a way, having Sheva always there is a bit more realistic (not that the series is known for it though hah). Who the hell would go into some unknown environment alone? People dont just split up.

True, realism is a plus...but does that mean Chris' super punch that can send a dozen enemies flying in a single blow is gonna tonned down? Because I love the mega punch! My only objection to Sheva being there, really, is that it's going to mean even more enemies and shooting. It has to. And the more enemies of this type on screen the less scared I'm gonna be. I remember with RE4 it made me nervous for two whole minutes...until I realised that I just need the right place to stand and shoot.

I dont like the idea with co-op but I'll get over it and it would be great it the split screan 2 players gameplay would be in the game. And I also like tthat you will have to be even more carefull while playing because of watching for Sheva, it makes the game more difficult and for me its also means more interesting and intense.

But seriously, I can't believe they are doing this co-op shit with Sheva always there.

I mean, a lot of fans were looking forward to playing as Chris again, finally.

And now, we are stuck with a co-op thing that will deviate Chris' cameo and part in the screen, and it will deviate the actual screen, tension, fight and everything as well.

Try to imagine Chris only in, playable, in the scenes where we see both now. All tenson and panic has been halved right down the middle.

What is Capcom thinking these days, really?
First they kick out Waugh. Then they still keep certain RE4 things when it was just supposed to be the gameplay.

                              And now this co-op shit.
