  • Resident Evil 5's Controls May be Optional, Another Kawata Interview

Hidden away inside the comments section of the Capcom Unity blog is a post by Capcom's Christan Svensson which seems to indicate that the new "Gears-like" controls, which will be unveiled at the Tokyo Game Show, may be optional. This gives hope that the controls won't be changed too much, since if the game would be controlled with Gears of War style handling, the enemy AI would need to be re-tuned for each control set.

In other news, Archelon found a G4 interview with Masachika Kawata from this years Leipzig. Its a bit old, but some of the information is interesting.
    • Co-op was decided from the beginning, since co-op play was becoming more popular
    • There are more locations than there were in 4, as well as lots of enemy creatures
    • Some of the team that worked on 4 came over to 5
    • Part of the mystery of the series will be concluded
    • Kawata is scared of the 2009 deadline

    G4 Interviews Kawata

Finally, I've added a Resident Evil 3 Mercenaries video the newly created RE3 video page. Its a video of Mikhails "optimal" path to rescue all survivors. Its a long video, but if you are into the mercs mode, be sure to check it out!

I never played gears of war but I hope the controls don't change to much.

Cool... Optional could work. It could even add some replay value, replaying the game with a different control scheme to see the different dynamics involved with each handling method.
To be honest though i can't imagine there being two different control types, absolutely no game i can think of has a feature like that and it seems a bit late in development to be changing controls too radically anyway. Hopefully we'll get a nice enhanced version of RE4's controls, i'd be down with that

          What

Optional does sound good, but what does he mean he's scared of the dealine..does he fear that the gamw wont be complete by that time, because honestly I dont think so.

Watch the video if you haven't already - you'll get the tone of the comment a lot more. The interviewer asked Kawata what he is afraid of, and he jokingly said "The deadline".

Thats a big relief. Hopefully the controls will be optional, so it doesn't alter gameplay much at all. I mean I like both RE and Gears, but when it comes to RE, for RE5, keep the RE4 controls over Gears.

Yeah, really. To cancel this game and start over, or not to cancel, that is the question. I'm not too crazy about the controls being optional, for some reason. I think it's because they should stick with one thing. Giving the player the option to choose between the control styles can increase replay value, but it sounds un-professional to me. I think they need to choose a style, and keep that as the standard for the whole game.

                    What the ?
This is all news to me... I've been out of the loop.
Watching the latest trailers, I think the game is looking AWESOME. I can't wait to play it and I'm READY to play it. I watched the trailer from the PSN on my HDTV frame by frame and the game looks amazing. Every frame looks like a great painting.
Best of all, it looks like it plays like a high-def version of RE4, with new locations, story etc. I loved RE4, hence I feel so ready to play it.

Now the're talking about messing with the controls?!
Walking and shooting could be a good thing but strafing is going too far IMO.

btw, I notice people are always referring to the 'Gears of War style', implying that it was an innovation. I thought that Gears stole the gameplay from Namco's 'Kill Switch' (or did Kill Switch steal it from an earlier game?).
I guess Gears has sold more, so it's the one most people know...

Fun fact: Gears of War was referred to as "Resident Kill Switch" by the development team, because Resident Evil 4 and Kill Switch were their biggest inspirations.

Is that for real or are you making a joke?
Kill Switch was a GREAT game! So damn fun to play.
The way enemies reacted to getting shot, combined with the duck & cover shooting, reminded me a lot of Time Crisis (also by Namco).

It's true. I'll see if I can find the source later.
