  • Eurogamer's Hands-On on Resident Evil 5

    Eurogamer has a new RE5 article, and have Takeuchi goes over some stuffs on the game.

    They cleared up the play-length confusion, citing that the play-length range from 10 to 30 hours, depending on the gamers' familiarity on the game. Other issues like the technical elements (PS3's hard disk install) and the possibility of RE2 remake are discussed too.

      But what about the dreaded hard-disk install for PS3 owners?
      Who the hell says that they are dreaded? I like when games have installs, it means they will usually run better... Stupid question from the interviewer. Would he rather the game had longer load times or other possible problems?

      Great news that we'll get a demo download!

      As for the RE2 remake comment. It was a predictable response to a question from the interviewer. It dosn't mean anything IMO...

            I want the series to move on too but after the successful remake of RE 1 a lot of fans wanted RE 2 to be remaded as well. Also don't forget that Shinji Mikami was working on RE 0, Remake and RE 4 at the same time!!

              Mikami wasn't workin on RE0. RE0 was produced by Capcom Production Studio 3, while REmake by Capcom Production Studio 4.

                  Not quite. He had little to do do with Zero and earlier versions of RE4 (both Kamiya and Shibata versions).

                  The REmake wasn't exactly the financial success Capcom wanted it to be, and frankly, the idea of remaking games is rather ridiculous.

                      They are dreaded when they are mandatory on your gaming console.
                      Having to spend 15~20 minutes installing Devil May Cry 4 before you can even play it is a big NO. Even worse if you've got... say, a 20gb or 40gb, or whatever, HDD and like 10 games with a mandatory install, so you can't fit all your install files on the drive at the same time. Then pulling out DMC4 for some quick comboing before you catch the bus is out of the question, 'cause the game wont even be done installing before you're already half-way to the moon on that on bus.
                      (Dunno if anyone read up on the NXE for the 360, but it takes less than 10 minutes to copy the DMC4 disc to your HDD, and it's not mandatory and it has less loading than the HDD installed PS3 version.)

                      Part of the reasons for the persistent appearance of mandatory PS3 installs is because the BluRay drive on the PS3 is slow. (Like; about half the read speed of what you find on the 360's DVD rom on a good day.)

                      Good to see that they are using real-time rendered cutscenes in the game.
                      (Which again, when they comment on the DVD space thing, shows that DVDs still houses enough space for your everyday big name AAA title.)

                        BluRay should be quicker it's passing more data through the laser with same the surface area.

                          If I've got the right specs in front of me now;
                          -The PS3 uses an 2x BR drive. Which streams data at an approximate of 72mbits/9mb per second.
                          -The 360 uses a 12x DVD rom. Which streams data at an approximate of 126mbits/16mb per second.

                          So... on "good day", the 360 is close to twice as fast as the PS3 at reading data from its optical medium of choice.

                            So the PS2 uses 24x for CD's and 4x for DVD's yet DVD transfer is quicker, when it reaches the outside of the disc it has a maximum of 6000KB to 9000KB with a CD it doesn't even touch 1000KB.

                              Not quite Carn. What you listed is technically correct, but it's 12X for a single layer disc which is effectively cut down to half with DVD-9's. Transfer rates peak IIRC at the centre of the disc too.

                              The main difference is that BD is a CLV type drive, while DVD is CAV. Multiplatform developers in general opt for the latter when doing loading algorithms, so it doesn't work well for a BD drive. To compensate, they follow the mandatory HDD install route which doesn't sit well with most.

                              Ideally the loading on both consoles should be comparable WITHOUT an install.

                              If DMC4 is an indication, RE5 on both platforms will fit on DVD. Simultaneous releases are typically catered for the lower common denominator where applicable (goes both ways - less available RAM on PS3 etc.).

                              Still, I'd kill for an uncompressed LPCM stream that's present in most of Sony's first party titles (and Condemned 2 among a small number of third party titles). DMC4's was barely a step above the standard DD one.
