  • Eurogamer Reviews Resident Evil 5

Eurogamer has posted their review of Resident Evil 5. They gave the game a 7 out of 10.

For all the gory details, head on over to Eurogamer.

The score is remarkably low. They complained about the standard control/inventory woes like most critics. Aside from that they said Normal mode in co-op was too easy, but AI Sheva on Normal mode is a pretty competent ally (less so on Vet or Pro). However, the reviewer claimed that Veteran mode was incredibly fun in co-op. I can't wait.

This is going to hurt the Metacritic rating.

Reminded me of their FEAR 2 review, thought that one got a 5 and the reviewer took jabs at the developers. Criticism is granted in a good review, but not when it's poorly written like this and the first sentence had the now-classic "stop and shoot" complaint.

I guess he wanted a formula overhaul for a full out action game.

Pretty much most of the reviews are going to be copy/paste jobs like this one

There's no such thing as "journalistic integrity" in gaming anymore

I dunno, there was nothing wrong with that review. They were actually pretty generous. They seemed to give credit where credit is due yet refused to overlook the linearity/controls, something that it is impossible to deny a lot of people will be frustrated by. I probably won't, and i'm still immensely excited about this game but I doubt RE5 will get any less than a 7 in other publications.

I read it to be a fair review.
I was always a bit worried that RE5 might feel a bit stale as a 3rd person shooter, as since RE4 was released, we've had fantastic games like Gears and Uncharted really advance the genre.
Upon reading their scoring system, 7/10 seems consistent with what they assign numbers as, as to what was written about the game. I don't think people realise that a 7/10 at Eurogamer isn't the same as a 7/10 at ign, or elsewhere for that matter.
It's rather stupid to summarise the good and bad points about a game in a single digit. What's even more stupid is to have a pre-concieved number you think the game deserves in your head, before you've even played it.

It's never really explained why Sheva has an English accent that could outposh Lara Croft.
Clearly they don't know anything about Africa.

Why are you so upset about 7?
Eurogamer is one of those sites that understand what 7/10 is:
A seven in Eurogamer speak is something we greatly recommend you have a good look at before you buy, because you can bet many highly regarded games over the years have been awarded a seven. If you're a fan of the genre in question then there's a very good chance you'll get a lot out of it, and often you'll hear a game's vocal following doing their best to boost its chances. Conversely, many detractors will seek to kick it down even further. A seven suggests you're into the idea of the game you should still try and check it out - you might like it more than you think, or be able to forgive its less than brilliant visuals. Or maybe it looks good, but the camera issues were just unforgiving, or maybe the AI wasn't up to much.

Over the years, in gaming parlance, seven has become almost the real 'average' score, but this is nonsense that we wish was flushed out of the scoring system with many publications terrified of giving certain games - particularly those of a great significance backed by big ad campaigns - less than this mark. Often giving less than seven is deemed to be the point of no return, with this considered to be the psychological barrier at which point people decide to buy at or not. But we're resistant to the idea and believe seven equates to being a very good score, and one that should be given more credit. In Eurogamer's eyes, it's still a great game, but one that is likely to sport a few areas where the game is blatantly let down - to the detriment of its overall quality and enjoyment.
Eurogamer uses the entire scale to score games, and not like many others sites/magazines: 10 - a very good good, 6 - a bad game.
