Really liked the retrospective and have to ask why are they called tank controls?

Because there's some similarity to how you drive a tank, that is, fowards is forwards regardless of the camera angle and such.

RE0 did come out in Europe (hence "Eurogamer") in 2003. Whatever happened to fact checking before labeling yourself?
