  • Capcom defends Resident Evil 5 DLC charges

Capcom has defended itself after a backlash over the announcement of three new multiplayer modes for Resident Evil 5, to be introduced via paid DLC.

Capcom stated that it's not just an unlock patch for content already in the game. Despite making use of the current assets, "the functionality is not currently in the game and is above and beyond the initial scope of Resident Evil 5."

Also it makes me wonder if those modes weren't included in review versions of RE5; I still can't believe that all those praises reviewers gave to RE5 bonuses was just about co-op Mercenaries.

BioHazard (PSone) - The trial edition, released about a month before the retail, contains a music track which was later used for the Battle Game in the SS version, released about a year later. There is also reference to battle game data in the PSone exes.

BioHazard 2 (PSone) - Chris Redfield's model is missing from the original retail version, but later resurfaces when CAPCOM rereleased Bio2 with Extreme Battle Mode. Again, the code existed from the get-go.

BioHazard CV/X - Cutscenes were prerendered in this title, and oddly, certain numbered cutscenes are missing from the original CV. Wouldn't-you-know-it, CAPCOM releases CVX, and the cutscenes that appeared to be scrapped reappeared, making the SFD cutscene list complete.

BioHazard 4 - File dates from a specific disc conclude that Seperate Ways was "in the making" for a long while before the PS2 version was released. And by "a long while", I mean mere days after it's intial GameCube release.

BioHazard 5 - I pay $103.47 (shipping included) for a collector's version, only to have to turn right around and start paying additional money to unlock content that would appear to already be on the disc. I agree with Mr_Zombie - surely reviewers aren't that mindless to praise the addition of The Mercenaries, especially when it's damn near the same mode that appeared in BioHazard 4.

        Sounds like CAPCOM, to me.
        I'm a blackstar.

Though I loathe paying for this kind of thing, at least it's (slightly) better value for money than the damned SF4 costumes.

I really don't care about paying 5 dollars, it's not a question of money...
but who owns an 360 Core/Arcade can't play Mercenaries online and Versus mode, this is really bad

Cutscenes were prerendered? Majority of cutscenes in CV was in real time, and the only prerendered cut-scene, as I remember, that was changed in CVX version was the one towards the end which shows Claire riding the elevator.

But once again I doubt that CVX exclusive cutscenes weren't in the game originally, because without them (and without Wesker's Report) Wesker's appearence had little sense. In the CV version he just shown himself three times and then dissapeared.

Mark Grass : The stuff you are referring to are things that Capcom did not have time to finish, not necessarily things that were meant to be in the game but scrapped just to add something new in a later release.

RE1 : the real issue is, why this Battle mode was not included in DC/DCDS versions.

RECVX : I remember reading an interview from the music composer, stating that he had to come back after RECV was released to compose additional tracks for those "deleted scenes", so indeed this was unfinished stuff. Nonetheless, it still appears as unfinished when you look at the way the Chris/Wesker fight is inserted in the ending scenes. Something is not right here.

RE5 : I would not trust reviewers AT ALL on this matter. The simple fact that the Merceneries mode return with a shitload of playable characters is more than enough to make them happy. Moreover, NO ONE had talked about these modes before Capcom did (don't say "NDA", come on, you know there will always be someone to spill the beans).
In any case, you can see for yourself if the content is indeed on the disc by checking its weight : if it's something like 124 Ko, like SF4 costumes, then yes. If it's more like 500 Mo, then obviously no.

Yes it is in the collectors edition strategy guide, (I don't know about the normal one) It says what characters, modes, and maps you get for verses. But for capcoms announcement they said something about unlocking new weapons, which the guide doesn't even mention, so I thing capcom told who ever made the guide that there was going to be verses, but even capcom hadn't finished writing all the code for the DLC yet.

I don't think capcom had this in the game, then made us pay for like some games. OnechanBara for the 360, had it in the the view mode and in the instruction manual that if you wanted extra characters and costumes you had to pay. They listed each one and had the information already in the game, like in the view mode, which had the DLC darked out. And to top it all off, they want 1600 ms points, that's $20.00.

Capcom's only asking 5 bucks for extra content, that is completely optional. For most games if you don't get the current map-pack, you can't play with people that do, cutting you out of a lot of games, and making matchmaking difficult (like halo or COD). Some people won't even want a verses mode. Resident Evil isn't about PVP, and having to stand still to shoot doesn't make for a great multilayer experience. And some people are going to love it. I've been dreaming for something like this in a Resident Evil game for years. And if the rumor that you can unlock new weapons for story part of the game is true, it makes it all the better.

This also leads to more opportunity in the future. If the verses DLC has good reception, capcom will likely release more. More maps, characters, modes, weapons... it all depends on us, the players, downloading this and liking it.

There are a lot of them that seemed realtime because they were done using the game engine but were recorded as MPEG (in this case Sofdec) files. It just allowed them to do things that wouldn't have been feasible had it been running on a retail DC unit.

Plus they actually removed one or two shots out of the FMV sequences to make it work. So who knows.

I did notice on one of the achievements for the new content is "unlock all Versus mode characters", can we assume there's a new character roster for the new game modes?

Nope, same as Mercenaries but you'll need to unlock them separately.

I'm really in two minds about DLC content. On the one hand, it's good because it adds to a games lifespan and keeps giving things up till the time a new full game is released. But lately, it just seems like things are being cut out of a game, sold as an exclusive to the highest bidder and put up for ridiculous money.

But on the other hand, it's always better than Resident Evil 5 X, isn't it ;).
