  • Resetting Residnt Evil + More Japanese Sales

IGN have put up a new article where they state some things that they would like to see return to the series. Most of the things they list are the same one's most hardcore fans want like the return of the zombies, so it's a fun read for all.

Also, this week in Japan Biohazard 5 slipped off of the top spot. The PS3 version still secured the second spot and has sold over 380 k units while the 360 version slipped out of the top 10.

That's a very interesting article IGN released. I agree with a lot of what they've said, especially the co-op thing, but sadly, we're in a generation where co-op is the "in" thing, and if a game doesn't have it, it takes away some appeal for people. Personally, I could care less about co-op. It's great and fun, and I do enjoy it, but I'll always prefer to play Resident Evil alone.

Also... as far as what they've said about the menu/item inventory. Well... I've never really had a problem with the way any of the Resident Evil games have set-up that system. It can cause you troubles, but it's not the end of the world--it's always manageable, so whatever.

I just hope Capcom does the right thing for Resident Evil 6. I hope it returns to horror and zombies.

You know, I like the feel of the new games and all, but I could certainly go for some old-school RE games. It would be neato if Capcom came up with something that felt like RE2 or 3, because I really liked the whole 'escape!' element to those. I think Code Veronica X was great, though I know not everybody liked it, because for me it kept a balance between the old feel of the games and updated graphics, etc.

I think Capcom are going too far towards the action gameplay. What made Resident Evil stand out was the horror elements, Trying to compete against action games, a lot of which, lets face it, do the same thing a great deal better is not the way to go. I do feel like they're cashing in on the RE franchise. I mean, there whole advertising campaign for the game is 'Fear you can't forget' but I certainly don't think I remember any fear. Light trepidation maybe, some, 'Damn that's sweet' moments but no fear.

There has to be a balance. The new game play is here to stay and given the reviews you know the next version will have run and gun. It's inevitable, I feel, although I don't think it's a good thing. They need to make the game scarier then. And no, more enemies to mow down isn't going to work. Having something big with tentacles will not work. Saying it's Resident Evil and therefore Fear I can't Forget isn't going to work if there's no fear to remember.

Bring back some of the old elements. Zombies are good, certainly, and I believe can easily be made a viable enemy with the current control scheme but they aren't the only answer. The Majini would be scarier if they were smarter. Let's face it, which is more nerve wracking...an enemy that charges at you blindly and dodges occasionally, from all directions,in a vast horde? Or a small force that are tougher than you and as smart. They ambush you, like the old zombies did. You walk past a window and a Majini or Ganado smashes through and grabs you. There AI is directed to stay out of sight as much as possible until a certain distance away before attacking.

It is possible to do it. Will Capcom bother? Maybe. Now it isn't just the old school fans telling them this stuff, it's the big review sites and magazines. Hopefully they'll listen to them even thought they'll never listen to us.

Going back to the slow zombies will be a step back for the series, Capcom must produce something original for RE 6. Takeuchi already said that he's going to reboot the series and I don't have a problem, it's good to try new things no one wants to remain stationary. About running and shooting, during his podcast interview Takeuchi said that he doesn't see that happen in a RE game.

Nice article. I loved RE4 but I still want the old style RE.

I agreed with the IGN article completely..and if a decent inventory function is needed then MGS is the best for freezing gameplay without losing what's going on. It don't matter if you can carry all your weapons either it's how much ammo you have left that spawns fight or flight gameplay. But if they won't go that route at least go back to the RE4 scheme.

I disagree with the sunlight thing. It's just not been utilised properly. Iy could be scary, but it manages to just be creepy for me. The lack of atmosphere stated in the article is bullshit imo.

I disagree with the menus. The one in 5 is fine, imo. It makes me nostalgic of the others, of having to think about what you want to carry. I mean, look at the image they used for 4's menu. You can hoard a hell of a lot of stuff in 4 and in any other game that would be good, but RE has always had a limit on the things you can carry. I'm glad they returned to it in 5.

To be honest, I'm just tired of people bitching about everything I like and I want them to stop. I know this makes me sound like a spoilt brat who's pissy because everyone doesn't think the same as him, but what the hell.

That article was bullshit. I guess all RE games are supposed to take place in darkness? Let's forget the natural progression of time! Or location! If people are bitching about the short length of RE5, imagine if the game was just stuck inside a dark haunted mansion...just how long could a game be if it is supposed to occur during the course of sunset to sunrise?

Sunlight isn't scary for the most part. The unknown of dark corridors is scary. But sunlight could be scary if it did indeed blind you for a few seconds as your eyes adjusted to the darkness of a room you just entered. I think most people just attribute dark scary place/building with the early RE games. RE4 was set in Spain (which was somehow set in perpetual nightfall) but that game wasn't exactly scary.

As for the inventory system...it was a tribute to the earlier games. And unlike in RE4, where one man army Leon can carry the logistical equivalent of a militia, RE5 tried to limit just how much a character could carry around. Can you still carry an absurd amount of grenades, guns, items? Yeah. What I'd actually have liked was if the amount of goods you carried slowed you down based on its approximate weight.

Also, the inventory system being real time added to the intensity of the game. Just play Mercs - it makes it stressful as hell.

IGN is really hit or miss with their articles.

Anyway, Mikami bastardized the RE "feel" when he churned out RE4 which was NOT an RE game. I am all for a "reboot." Bring back something akin to REmake. (And please leave Leon FAR away from it.)

Something like a cross between this and this, perhaps?

A combination of those two would be awesome, but I really want them to do a combo of Plagas and Zombies. I just think it makes sense.

I will like to see an even more agressive crimson head/L4D zombie hybrid too. A zombie that sprints at you wanting your flesh, even if you just blasted his limbs away and he's on the ground, he's still shifting his body madly at you, bloody eyes wide opened while screaming and screeching loudly.A horde of 'em, with handheld weapons too (no guns and shields though) like butcher knifes or a sharp hook.

But plagas is controlling a live host, whereas a zombie is technically dead.
