  • Destructoid DC Douglas Interview

Destructoid have put up a new interview with voice actor D.C Douglas who portrayed Albert Wesker in Resident Evil 5. He talks about his influences, fan reactions and other things. He also seemingly confirms that Wesker will be in Dark Side Chronicles.

I hope Wesker will come back (some how!), but I am in the dark, just like you. It's probably doubtful. There is another UC coming soon and I reprise in that one for some flashback stuff.

Destructoid: What influenced the David Bowie-esque quasi-English accent that Wesker slips into during the course of Resident Evil 5, and why is it so awesome?

Douglas: Because I am David Bowie ... Sorry, okay, really that was due to my interp of Peter Jessop's performance, which the producers wanted me to match for UC.
Peter Jessop? Surely he means Waugh? Jessop's portrayal was more in line with the "American" voice Wesker that we saw in the original RE. It wasn't until Waugh took over in CVX that the character adopted a certain trans-atlantic dialect.

Destructoid: Resident Evil has a very devoted fanbase, and I know that the series' female fans can be very ... "protective" ... of the Wesker character. How has the fanbase treated your representation of Wesker and have you had any disturbing fanfiction sent your way? Would you like me to send some?

Douglas: Don't ever contact me again ... Actually, I have gotten many nice emails from RE fans. I have also read some nasty things as well online. It's all good, ultimately, in that I got the gig. It means the right people dug what I was doing. You can't please everybody. If you try, you end up watered-down and boring -- in anything.
I'm guessing that a majority of these "nasty things" came from the aforementioned Wesker fangirls. There's some particularly sinister types out there, not so much what they do but what they write.

Destructoid: There has been quite a bit of controversy surrounding Resident Evil 5, since many have taken issue with what they view as "racial imagery." What are you thoughts surrounding the "Resident Evil racism" debate, and was it ever an issue during your time working on the game?
Old arguement. Now irrelevant. Why must every single interview pertaining to RE5 always bring up the now-moot point of racism. It wasn't an issue initially and despite the best efforts of the blacks to give themselves more influence, it will never be an issue. Besides, it's clear that RE5's themes are anti-colonialism, imperialism and partnership. Oh, and exploitation.

Douglas: If you have "issues" -- deep psychological issues, certain things will trigger an "acting out" episode. In the 60's they blamed LSD for atrocious acts. But, looking closer, it was individuals who were already off-balance to begin with. If I was a CSI fan and watched every week, am I going to want to kill a stripper in Vegas? Just as silly. These a-holes who go on rampages are already sick. They are just using VGs or rock music or vampire books as a catalyst.
Thank you! This is the kind of support that the video games industry needs. It's fantastic to see someone pointing out the obvious fact, that video games are the latest scapegoat for society's own failings. The kind of people that commit these acts are already a few sandwiches short of a picnic to begin with.

Douglas: I hope Wesker will come back (some how!), but I am in the dark, just like you. It's probably doubtful. There is another UC coming soon and I reprise in that one for some flashback stuff.
Hmmm...I was hoping for Wesker to keep clear of DSC. I already feel that the series is saturated with his presence.

Personally, I'm glad Douglas will be reprising the role for Darkside Chronicles. After a really great performance in RE5, it'd be ridiculous not to cast him again.

As for the rest of the interview... Very interesting. I got a good laugh when he poked fun at the racism debate and said, "Well, I personally can't work with white people, so I had them leave the studio." Lawl.

I'm just really excited about the confirmation we will indeed be seeing Wesker in DSC. Woot~

He was easily the best actor to ever portray Wesker. Letting anyone else voice him in the future would be a joke.

Wesker will be probably in CVX scenario, right?

That, and I imagine he'll have some correspondence with Ada, assuming she's in the game.

CVX scenario, RE4 scenario, hell they could even add him in the RE2 scenario giving orders to ada or something (if she's in it).

                        Elaborate. I'm intrigued now.

I don't recall the specifics, but I know it was what made Mr. Douglas himself get an account here. I think one of the members had described his performance in Umbrella Chronicles as "atrocious" or something like that.

Now that I think about it, I think it was back when we were all trying to figure out just who was voicing Wesker in RE5. There had been some confusion as to whether it was Ken Lally or D.C. Douglas.

Yikes. That can't have been good for the site's reputation. Though I can't say that his performance in UC was the best, he redeemed himself with RE5. I think his portrayal in RE5 was fantastic, which is why I attribute the UC voiceover to poor directing. Sounds like he didn't have much to go on either.

So Wesker is comming back for Darkside Chronicles he must be in CV scenario if there is one most likely will be and if there's ADA scenario maily in RE2 then we can be asure he will be there as well.
